The Labour Government released some details of its Migration Strategy , much less than expected in fact. We can see however big changes will happen in 2024. In this edition we just cover the basics from the pages and pages in the actual document.
On the weekend we will have an indepth analysis of what impacts it will have on many people in Australia and overseas.

@@jihnyap8479not only phd but also masters as well. After following bachelors most of them work few years before starting masters. Otherwise how can a genuine student find a money for their masters in Australia?? They need to work first get some experience, earn enough money to spend in overseas to follow a master degree. When considering an age limit these factors also need to be considered. I think for post graduate students ( including masters and phd) practical age limit is 40 for apply TGV and same for bachelor is 30. It’s not fair to set 35 for post graduate students and again it’s useless to give 35 for bachelor.

Hi Karl I am an onsore student enrolled in an MBA which will b completed in July 2024.With the trust getting the oppertunity for PSW I have sacrificed everything and came to this country to get a good education and the International experience. But by next July I will be above age 35 as the majority of International students in the country right now. We have spent what we took from our home country as well as what we earn here. If this was announced to us at the time we enrolled we would have gone for another option. But now this very unfair for the current students who are already in the country who are about to finish their studies. This is impacting our current studies as well as most of us are depressed due to this unfair decision. The new students will come knowing this but us we are helpless. So please help us the current students to voice out this unfairness. Please be the voice for us as we all have families and we can't just go back and expect the employers to pay us more just because we have an Aussie qualification which we could have done staying in our home country with our loved ones. But we took the risk and came to this country to gain the qualification and the experience both. So please help us

Hi Karl, Thank you for the video. The age limit of 35, especially for the existing onshore students, is totally unfair . We were told that post study work visas will be given to get Australian work experience, which adds value to the course we are following. After all, spending heaps of money and time on studying, if they don't offer us 485, it's like a daylight robbery.😢

Hi Karl, My instinct says there will be 189 invitation round on 21st of December, whats your thoughts in regards to possible 189 invitation round right before christmas as a santa gift which I have been mentioning few times in the comment section. Also, should we trust MIA who mentioned about possible small 189 invitation round before christmas though my instinct said since November there will be one 189 round just before christmas, so lets hope we get one.

Mr. Karl, please make a separate video on TGV (s 485). We are into half of the study program (Master). We were told we would be granted a 4-year post-study visa when our visa was granted. It's a nightmare if a student has to leave the country after spending so much on tuition fees. Can you please explain in detail on TGV? Thank you.

Putting age restriction as low as 35 is purely discrimination! They should not look on the age but the genuine entrance as a student. My sister is a genuine student taking up bachelors degree but she will graduate after a four year course at the age of 36 and now she is robbed by the chance of having a visa to gain Australian experience by that discriminating restrictions of age for post grad visa! My sister is a genuine student. She focuses in her study and have good outstanding grades, one of the best in her class but now i am so disappointed for her, i am the one paying for her tuition and stay here and she only study but now, she will lose the chance to work full time after her study via post grad visa because of her age! Come to think of it, people who finished their higher education, bachelors and above will now lose the chance to gain experience in Australia because of the age restriction for post grad visa! That is unfair! They also deserve to have work experience after studying higher education here! 35 yo is still so young!!!! I hope this won’t materialise!!!

Agree immigration in regional communities is where immigration needs to go, hold them to being in that rural area for 7 years before they move elsewhere, Regional areas hold many varied chances but if you don't put immigrants there that want to come to Australia how is that fair to people already here. You can still do degrees etc and have work experiences in those areas, or in some cases own homes that are at present and make them Beautiful, make better roads and more transport and make better opportunities and more perfect example Broken Hill. Bring the immigrants put them in Regional towns, as I said make it an requirement they need to stay in that area the whole family, relatives etc for 7 years.

The report says something on the line of “consultation” so immediate change seems unlikely imo. As for whether they will keep 189/190/491, nobody knows. I would not be too surprised if they change the number just for the sake of it.

Stamping out non-genuine students is good, but I bet international education sector would feel the heat of reduced revenue from the slightly harder English requirement and maybe tougher genuine student test. Sort of hard to believe how pre-pandemic NOM was around 250,000, yet it explodes in just two years. I guess it has something to do with unlimited work rights before 1 Jul 2022 and long 485 visa that now not many students would be able to take advantage of. Seriously, planning migration future is indeed quite challenging in Australia. Whichever path you might choose could get shut down in moments notice, wasting all the time and money while throwing people into migration limbo.

Thanks for the continuing great updates! My question relates to page 47 of the new migration strategy, future, guaranteed pathways to permanent residency section. “Periods of employment with any approved employer will count towards permanent residence requirements. Temporary skilled migrants will be able to apply for permanent residence through self nominated independent pathways” Can you think why they wouldn’t just make this available now to us existing 482 visa holders? Will this be available at all to 482 holders? Or just future skills in demand visa holders? If not, how will 482 holders be handled fairly?

Hello Karl, sorry I just applied for 2 years extension ( 485 postgraduate) and waiting for my medical examination. it is always fully booked so I had to make an appointment which is in a month. I am worried about what happens if they actually start to cancel the extension? I heard they have announced that it will be discontinued. We expect the states can still set their own rules. But when the points test changes that wil work independently of the states

First aus made immigration so easy that literally anyone could enter (including genuine students and also those who wants to just earn) .. now they are making it so difficult that any student with a right mind would not think about aus . if a student wants to purse MS in CS or other high demand program … they should better go to US . There is literally no difference left between US immigration policy and Aus immigration. (US- 2 yrs , AUS -2yrs) .. the only difference here is that US has the market to provide jobs to those who are qualified , where as AUS doesn’t have that kinda market rn. Instead of capping PWGP rights .. they should have mandated the GRE and ILTES score 7 or above. this would have automatically filtered students and not to mention would have significantly improved the diminishing education quality pf the unis

Hi, I have an inquiry about the 491 visa. My thinking the time taken for 491 visa to be granted for onshore applicants is that to make them stay longer in regional area for the development of those area. But why are they taking same amount of time for offshore applicants because the delay in grant for the offshore applicants has no advantages for them. I am offshore and it has been more than 7 months that I have applied for 491 visa.

Seems offshore applicants are getting a faster processing deal these days. Last one I spoke too took about 9 months

Hi Karl, if the age 35 limit rule is applied for TGV, can we ( people over 35 when this rule apply ) apply for 491 or 190 directly from a student visa 500 if we have enough points? Without having to go through 485. Thanks a lot

Looks like July is the date for the 485 visa changes. Does not matter what visa you are on for the points test visas

That's a good question. Can one apply for the 491, 190 or 189 visa immediately after finishing their program since they won't be eligible for the 485 visa because of their age?

For existing 485 visa holders, who haven't applied for the visa extension, is it too late? Feel like 2 years are lost with this change, with no change in the background in terms of actually providing easier pathways, but rather just saying a lot of removals now and patting one's one back
