That classic version of the Woman's Weekly Children's Birthday Cake cook book is a legendary cook book in Australia. I spent hours as a kid pouring over the pages of that cook book nagging mum to make me one of those cakes and I did have (her version) of those cakes for some of my birthdays as a kid. Real slice of average Australia right there, whoever sent you that hooked you up for real.

That Women's Weekly Cake CookBook was a staple in most houses when we were growing up... we would spend the month leading up to our birthday parties looking through the book for what we wanted our cake to be and then "helping" out to make it As for the 'L' and 'P' plates, we use those to differentiated drivers from experienced drivers. L-plates are for first time drivers, you need to have an experienced driver with you and record your hours (120 hours minimum) so you can take the driving test. P-plates are the next level and there are 2 levels of P-plates (red lasts for 1 year and green for 2 years). You can drive by yourself on these levels but are restricted on certain aspects of driving like speed and how many points can be deducted before you lose your licence.

Great mail time as always, just a bit on the Mr. Squiggle coins, so Mr. Squiggle was a kids show which started on 1st of July 1959 and ran until 9th of July1999 it was created by and started by artist Norman "Heth" Hetherington it stared Mr. Squiggle, a puppet with a working pencil for a nose children would send him their squiggles and Mr. Squiggle would make something out of them all though they would always be upside down for the practical reason that Norman Hetherington would be operating Mr. Squiggle and other puppet characters created by Norman from above the set apparently very close to the hot studio lights. Mr. Squiggle would have a human assistant on the show the first being Gina Curits who Mr. Squiggle would refer to as Miss Gina calling the assistant Miss carried on until the Miss Jane after that the last two assistants were called by their first name the last assistant being Norman's daughter Rebecca who I remember. Some of the other puppets included Blackboard who was always grumpy and was known to say "Hurry up, hurry up!", Gus the snail, Bill the steam shovel and more all designed, built, operated and voiced by Norman. The coins were made to celebrate the show unfortunately Norman passed in 2010 and didn't get to see the coins. The coins were released in 2019. I have a link here to a episode from Rebecca's time on the show which you may which to show Emma and Andrew you and Daniela may which to watch as well to get a idea of the show. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-cLrG_X-sImc.html

Hi Ian, I was thinking about You a couple of nights ago. I tried a new item at Macca's a Tim Tam McFlurry. I hope they're still making them when You and Yours Finally visit Australia. My Sister and enjoyed them. Aussies Love Ned Kelly He was a Bushranger who only became a Criminal in order for His Family including His Widowed Mum to survive. The British Authorities were Highly Prejudiced against them for being Irish. They were also Corrupt. After His Trial that was A Set Up from the start and His Execution. They finally Cleaned Up those Local Authorities. He wasn't Unnecessarily Violent. He saved another Little Boy from Drowning as a Kid. Ned once told a Young Officer was told "Keep Quiet and I won't Shoot You!" Unfortunately He wouldn't and so left without any other choice He was Killed. Most of the Ordinary Locals Loved Him because they Shared His Plight. The few days before the Authorities caught Him, He and His Gang were Holding Up at a Local Pub. The Authorities claimed it was A Hostage Situation, but they were Having A Party in reality. The Authorities just Opened Fire, without any concern about Who Was Shot. I Hate Violence but even I have a Ned Kelly Poster.

Ned Kelly did Rob banks! A bit like a Robin Hood type - only stole from the rich. The world's first real Iron man 🤣 you should watch the 2000s movie starring Heath Ledger as Ned 😁

I was born in Sydney and grew up on the Central Coast. We lived on Shelley Beach Road, Long Jetty. We used to chase the waves for surfing every weekend. Soldiers Beach often had great waves. Loved the beach at the end of my Street the most. It is stunning but I now live on a pretty beach in QLD. I love mail time. It takes me home too. I had the Woman’s Weekly Birthday cake book. I made so many of them but my kids used to read it to death.

Haigh's is a fancy chocolate company that makes first class chocolate products. Blinky Bill & friends were originally part of stories by Dorothy Wall from the '30's. I loved the hand drawn sketches in her books as a kid that became movies & cartoons in later years.

I've recently passed my driving test and gotten my P plates so I can explain how the system works. There are variations between states on how many hours you've gotta rack up and how long each stage takes etc, but generally the stages are consistent. When you turn 16 you can get your L plates after doing a driving rules/theory test, then you have to do lessons with someone who's had their full license for at least 4 years and has to be sober etc. (most people do lessons mostly with their parents, there are also professional instructors) and log a certain amount of hours before you can progress to the practical test. In WA you have to log 50 hours of learning, other states have more, some maybe less, and also have to pass an online simulated hazard perception test. Then I think you have to be at least 17 to go for your Practical Driving Assessment with a professional assessor, and it's super hard to pass on the first go. Once you pass, you get your provisional license (Ps), and you can drive by yourself for the first time. Red P plates are first so you're a new new driver, and we have to have 0.00 BAC level and can't drive between midnight and 5am, and we have less demerit points on our license so it's easier to lose your license. After 6 months you transition to green Ps, which is still 0.00 BAC and low demerit points but no curfew. That's 18 months, then after being on Ps for a total of 2 years you get rid of the plates and you're just a normal driver, allowed up to 0.05 BAC and 12 demerit points I got my Ls at the same time as everyone but then life and study got in the way and I procrastinated lessons and then straight after high school moved away from my hometown to go to uni, so I never had the family car around, and also had a couple traumatising lessons with a friend which made me avoid driving for years and years. So finally at 24 I'd saved up enough money to do professional lessons and get my license, and I've spent probably close to $3500 this year getting my full 50 hours, and finally got my Ps at age 25!

Woahhhh that is so different than here. Sounds like a safer system and wow.xant believe it cost that much. Thank you for explaining that. So interesting. :)

Wow. I'm in Vic, and I think you now need to log a total 120 hrs including all weather conditions and day/night etc. But easier to achieve when 16 is learners, and can't apply for licence till 18, 1 hour a week basically. I have no idea what the current requirements are in Vic, but glad I got my licence 20+ yrs ago, no experience required, just pass the parallel park test and you were pretty much safe (and theory of course). Getting my heavy vehicle endorsement was more stressful (and $$$) than anything I faced getting my car licence. That said, the current requirements make for much better drivers.

We are in QLD and my son is currently on his L's has to log 100hrs with a licenced driver in a combination of both daytime, and night time before going for his P's. If he pays for a professional driving instructor 1hr of lesson = 3hrs in his log book.

@@shannonfriedel7101 OK, that's insane IMHO. A 'professional' is worth 3x more than a licneced driver? Sounds like a rort to me
@ryan_r849
@ryan_r849 2 года назад
@@shannonfriedel7101 It's great you can 'short-cut' it, but ultimately, a 'professional' doesn't give you three times more experience in an hour. Just sounds like a money-spinner for a 'professional' (who is nothing more than a full licence driver with a business licence). Just a money-spinner for the 'instructors' to get kids (and parents) to commit to driving lessons. As you probably know, nothing can beat hours on the road

he's going to get the December/Christmas editions of Coles & Wollies magazines soon, just in time for the family to miss the Holiday, perhaps some one should drop him the Christmas editions of Woman's Weekly and Better Homes & Gardens and set him up for an Australian style "Christmas in July" since a lot of the supplies he can pick up cheap after the holiday and perishable stuff wont be in season till mid year for him in his part of the world. For those who don't know down hear it's kind of a thing for some folks to take a long weekend some time in July and go to the Snow to have a European or North American style Christmas, since our actual Christmas is at the height of Summer.
