The Australian Shepherd, also known by dog lovers as an Aussie, was first identified in the US in the 1840s.
These animals are known to be loyal, energetic, and affectionate with their owners.
Like many other dogs, the pros and cons of an Australian Shepherd are highly dependent on the expectations of the individual pet owners.
This breed is categorized as a herding dog and is happiest when kept busy or entertained with a task.
As highly intelligent dogs, Aussies are easy to train and are eager to learn.
Now that's out of the way, let's start with some of the Pros:
Their Temperament:
Australian Shepherds can be described as the ultimate working breed that has a lot of energy, highly intelligent, active, and capable of learning many different skills.
With strangers, Aussies tend to be reserved and they take their time before they offer their friendship to new people in their life.
With their families, Australian Shepherds are affectionate, loyal, and known as velcro dogs.
If you don't know, this means that this dog will follow the owners from room to room and enjoys being close to their family.
Australian Shepherds are intelligent and have a strong desire to use their minds.
Activities such as training, interacting with their owners, and learning new skills are very important for Aussies.
Australian Shepherds hate to be left alone or bored.
This is the type of dog that needs to be involved in all family activities and thrives in an active family that can offer plenty of time, exercise, and a suitable job for this dog breed.
Whether it is a herding job or staying busy doing any active dog sport such as tracking, agility course, or anything else that keeps the dog busy, for this breed it is necessary to have something that keeps the dog doing something constructive every day.
Running and getting daily exercise is something that Australian Shepherds need to do every day.
Their endless energy needs a healthy outlet that also helps to prevent bad behaviors that stem from boredom.
Young Australian Shepherds and puppies are very active and will obviously need to be supervised during the first year or so.
They also need to start their obedience training and learning good manners.
Socialization is very important for this breed and the more time an owner invests into socializing the young Australian Shepherd, the more comfortable the dog will be in different situations.

My Aussie saved us from a fire. Something in the water heater caught fire and the fire starting spreading in the basement while we were sleeping up on the third floor. We were staying with a friend and the alarms were not set up. She not only woke us up and scratched on the floor to let us know something was wrong downstairs. She found the friend’s cats and rushed them out to us so we didn’t get stuck in the house looking. She refused to come out until she found all three cats. She came out of it safely, we all did, and the vet gave her an all clear health wise. We saw her crawling low and fast on the floor, so she even knew how to keep down to stay away from the smoke that was starting to come up. She was never near a fire before! She’s such a good dog, and a total hero

Love my Aussie. She is 11 months old. Follows me everywhere whether it’s the kitchen, yard, bathroom, shower. She is always by my side. We have a daily routine whether it’s the park or river. She changed my life. Best dogs ever.

These dogs' personalities vary greatly. I have had some that were very active and needed daily activity and others that are couch potatoes like my DazyDog I have now. She loves to play but not for a long time. She would rather snuggle than spend time outside playing. Of all the Aussies I have ever had Miss DazyDog is the sweetest, gentlest dog I have ever owned. These are great dogs for families with kids. Very protective.

We have had 4 Aussies over the last 25 years. Everything he said is very true. High energy, require daily exercise, and wary of strangers. If you want a sociable, outgoing dog that is friendly with strangers, don’t get an Aussie, get a golden retriever. Aussies are wonderful dogs, but when strangers or children approach to pet our dog, we say no.

I like Australian Shepards they’re good herding dogs, cuddly and I’ve seen one of my community neighbors walk one last week. Oakley is a pretty friendly dog, from him jumping and letting me pet him showed that he really liked me. Oakley has a brown, grey and white fur and has eyes with two different colors (orange and light blue). Australian Shepard is another dog I’ve been thinking on getting in the future. And I’ve seen one shown in the movie Marmaduke, Mazie was Marmaduke girlfriend and love interest during the whole movie.

I see a lot of videos why people shouldn’t get them. I will say they have a lot of energy, and need to be trained right away. You have to let them out and run daily I trained mine off the leash, and she and he learned vocal commands. They come every where with me to my office, to long road trips. I don’t recommend taking on plane unless it’s private and they can be with you at all times. They will rely on you more then a child mine use to come in to the bathroom with me. Now they sit at the door, and if I take to long they scratch and bark. They really need to be next to you. And he said they can be around strangers yes and no, if you aren’t their or the people are good people my dogs go ballistic, they are well trained but strangers or bad people are a no go around thems. And please please don’t get one if you can’t afford to take of, these dogs will need the vet, the can be really brave and wild, and with age they will rely more on you, but while they are young and vibrant they will be right next to you their whole life no matter what nothing will keep them from you. But in return you will be their Shepard in later years of life most likely. They do not age well no matter how good you take care of them. They go blind quite easily.

Those "young Australian shepherds" at 2:24 aren't even Australian shepherds. Those are Australian cattle dogs. So I'm not sure how reliable the rest of the video is if you can't even distinguish two Very different breeds when you're making a video Specifically about a particular breed of dog. 🙄
