A fun little throwback to February 2019. What simpler times they were. A very hot and dry season (we had one week every day over 40C.) What a great experience and coaching flight for the new cross country pilot as I was.
There's another few hours plus information that I could give when it comes to wave lift formation and usage. Please accept my simplification.
Hope my European friends are having a good season at the moment.

That was awesome. I was thinking the same thing about the O2. That was awesome airmanship from you guys. Could hear the excitement in your voice over the climb. That's what it's all about man. Cheers from Florida, USA.

I remember a day at Mission Peak, Fremont California, back when Sky Sailing was still a going concern there. A convergence set up on the ridge, and we were able to soar quite far up the sides of some big Cu piling up against the ridge. Was in a 1-36, chasing the others as we wound around the castles in the sky. A great day..!

That was awesome. Never had the chance to ridge soar in a glider. Beautiful smooth air!

Stay High Stay Fast Stay Alive. General message to all glider pilots from experience. Talk to ATC if in CTA, I had a windshield full of glider at FL190 on descent in a near miss, circa 1994, just doing my job with fare paying passengers. I get gliding, having 300hrs + gliding before starting my airline career. The thrill of wave yeah....na do it properly or be on CH7 news where your family would not be proud of you....just saying

You're spot on. Have to play by the rules and share airspace with all users safely. However in this flight we remained outside the CTA. The Wave was south of the Melbourne-Sydney corridor then as we descended below FL125 and into class E we were back on Area Frequency :)

Really great, well done! OK here's something to think about: was the wave caused by thermals reaching up into the laminar air, OR were the thermals caused by the low pressure areas under the wave 🤯 One thing to keep in mind, if the thermals are good i.e. the lower air is unstable, it probably isn't the wind bouncing over the mountains making the wave. What was the wind speed at mountain height vs upper winds?

Oh you’re right on there. It’s hard to tell what’s causing what😬. Hard to recall what the precise conditions were that day. There was strong thermals lower down, but also strong wind lower and even stronger higher up. The cause may have been some combination of the two, I’m not sure. Happy to be informed of my ignorance😄 Cheers!

Interesting statement Tim, I’m not sure I know how that works? My understanding (could be wrong) is like this: Mountain waves require stable air just above the mountain (Inversion) with unstable air below and above the inversion. Stronger thermals (starting up in the unstable air below) can punch through the inversion and keep going. So this is what I thought happened in this case, they climbed in a nice strong thermal and ended up in wave lift. (The inversion is clearly visible at 5:51) Information Source: “Understanding The Sky (Dennis Pagen)” - page 164, 165,…

Fantastic video - love the way you document this flight. Wave is fantastic - I get to enjoy it from time to time in the Swiss Alps. Your channel will get more popular if you leave out the music. The watchers want the glider sounds! And... great high tech cover over the flarm unit!. (my channel is ronald glider)

Thanks Ronald Glider :) It’s interesting with the music, some people really like it and some don’t. So I think I’ll still do a bit of both. Very nice channel you have there too😄

What a great example of wave flying, thanks for sharing, Mate! 😀👍 They say there is also some excellent wave to be had on the Grampians, have you tried it over there? (In fact The Grampians Soaring Club has a wave camp coming up on 9 July to 12 July)
@StayHighStayFast
@StayHighStayFast 3 года назад
I was all booked and ready to go to the camp as it was meant to be last weekend. Pity because I don’t think I can get to it now with those new dates :( Yes I hear the wave tends to be more reliable there. It’s on the list. Cheers.

@@StayHighStayFast Yes, the damn Covid restrictions is to blame for the reschedule.

The Grampians wave camp in 2023 was one of the best with quite a lot of flits over ten thousand feet and three gliders made flights of over twenty thousand feet for I was one flying a Janus A . This is the second time I have made a flight of over twenty thousand feet and the Grampian soaring club.

My wife and I hiked across Mt Feathertop some 30 years ago. Inspiring to see you guys "conquer" it from above! Brilliant video, keep 'em coming. PS My vote is for less music and more pure flying and commentary. Unless you're playing something suitably sublime like JS Bach!

Are you guys using a transponder?

This glider did not have one. Many of us do have ADSB “in” and more and more gliders are adopting “out” via devices like skyecho.
