Unfortunately the Anthem is not from Francis Joseph, but of the last emperor of the holy Roman Empire Francis I of Habsburg. Haydn wrote Melody and Text as Support again the french Revolution and Napoleon. After 1815 it became the people Anthem in Austria. But when Francis Joseph became emperor the Text was very different. Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser was written in 1797 as a counter to Revolutionary France. Sometimes known as the Kaiserhymne, the music was by Franz Joseph Haydn and the lyrics were by Lorenz Leopold Haschka. It was a personal anthem to Francis II, the last Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. In 1826, new lyrics were written for Francis II, who was now Emperor of Austria. Both versions began with the words: "Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser, unsern guten Kaiser Franz!" and had the same words in their chorus. Lorenz Leopold Haschka also wrote the 1826 version of the Kaiserhymne. After Francis II died in 1835, the lyrics were changed to "Segen Hohen Sohne Osterreichs, Unsern Kaiser Ferdinand!" (Bless the High Son of Austria, our Emperor Ferdinand!) referencing Ferdinand, who ruled until he abdicated in 1848. The throne then passed to Ferdinand's nephew, Franz Joseph, and for him, Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser was used until 1867. When Austria became Austria-Hungary in 1867, the anthem was officially changed to Gott erhalte, Gott beschutze, and this was used until the fall of the Empire in 1918. The tune was used in the anthem of the Austrian Federal State from 1920 until 1938, and was used in many school hymns and church hymns. This music is most famously in use to this day as Germany's national anthem, Das Lied der Deutschen or Deutschlandlied. This is to provide the following feedback: this is NOT the anthem of the Austrian Empire. This version of Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser is the original 1797 version, which was the anthem of the Holy Roman Empire, not Austria. The Austrian version has different lyrics and a slightly different melody, though the tune is the same.

One of the most precious anthems. Sometimes I wonder what if the Habsburgs and the Hohenzollern had somehow united, and a moderate non-militaristic united German Empire had endured. Imagine, a Habsburg emperor of Germany, crowned in Aachen, who would wera an Iron Cross and the Golden Fleece. If Peace in Europe, and harmony between Nations had prevailed, this could have been a great scenario. "Er zerbrach der Knechtschaft Bande, Hob zur Freiheit uns empor!
