Wow. I feel like I read somewhere that they were happy to look back on their days of using elektron gear but seeing this work gives a pretty rare insight into how influential it was to their development. Now I want one.
Henry Murphy I was pleasantly surprised to hear from Elektron about this only a few weeks after purchasing my first Elektron product, a Digitakt. Really inspiring to know they used these since I bought it to do just this style of music.
@cosy murx It was in an interview that I can't recall off the top of my head. If you look up the "Ask Autechre Anything" Q&A spreadsheet, Sean mentions "Intermission" as his favorite album, which was part of the Mark of the Mole project.
It's in the manual, pages 96 and onwards. You'll need a sysex compatible USB midi interface and some software to send the sysex data (C6 from the Elektron site was made for this)
Anybody knows whether the files would work on a MnM Mk1? I understand that the MD UW is necessary as they play samples, but files for MnM mk1 and mk2 may be compatible, no?
I think they only started using software heavily around LP5. Untilted and Quaristice were outliers in that they were a departure from the Max based setup they were using for Confield and Draft 7.30 (and which they returned to from Oversteps onwards). I'd love to hear what they'd make with the newer Elektrons, especially the Digitone or Octatrack!
@@0Fdigital also even exai (and ostensibly the two newer albums) were partially made using hardware synths. And a bunch of the mpc samples from this set are from an SH101
Synth wise do most Elektron gear sound the same or are they any different? I’m interested in the Mono, analog keys, and Digitone. I’m new to music producing but I’m dying to get a an Elektron for the FM and wondering if tone is any different in the earlier/newer models... Thanks
Those three are pretty different, I'd say. Monomachine is the experimental monster of the three, almost modular, and probably the hardest to find the sweet spots.. but maybe the most rewarding once you get there. The Digitone has the most polyphony of all three, and can get SUPER lush but also pretty brutal and synthetic sounding. I haven't used the A4 much at all, but as with all Elektron boxes I've heard a lot of really great stuff made with it.
Not the same at all. Elektron Analog Four is a truly incredible instrument that is deep and sounds amazing. Digitone is a very accessible FM synth. Monomachine is an expensive box that sounds very harsh and cheap. It does alot of things but isnt very good at any of them. its only good if you like cheap, harsh, glitchy sounds that you can glitch up even more with the powerful sequencer. just listen to these sounds in the video. it all sounds like total crap
@@djangofett4879 I mean, a lot of synths sound weak without FX. the MD and MM sound brutally and unashamedly electronic. This is part of what people love about them.
For the Quaristice tour it was Machinedrum, Nord Modular G2, MPC1000. If you go to the link in the description, they've also uploaded files for the G2 and MPC (including some samples!)
@@capitanmission The Monomachine (as well as all other Elektron machines apart from the recent Digi* series) doesn't store tempo in patterns, so I basically just guessed. Turns out the actual live set was faster, around 150-160bpm.
@@0Fdigital ahh, ok. so you cant program tempo variations, you need to do them live. The bpm for the live gigs is way faster than the average in the album from that era (Quaristice)!
tz That's something only they could answer. I don't think there's a technical explanation. It's probably a personal taste thing, maybe they want everything to sound like it's coming from one source with only spatial effects to make it stereo.
Nah, they only ever used the Machinedrum and Monomachine, and switched back to Max/MSP in 2010 or so. I think they're working towards an entirely Max based setup, if they're not there already. It'd be interesting to hear what they'd do with the Digitone though.. or the Octatrack for that matter!
They've been using their custom software 100% at least since their 2014 tour. Exai used a bit of hardware, but that's it, I believe. Sean said that the MM/MD were sitting in a box in storage after the Quaristice tour.
@@FilipPandrc They haven't exactly been open about it, but from what I've gathered, it's based around Max. They've also said that they have their own custom MIDI replacement for communicating between patches. docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1XAizLmKun4yF6oBVUhIrewYN-ZiY_9ORckmT-hF93Ho/htmlview here's an AMA from 2013 that's well worth a read if you want to glean some information about their production methods.
It was available on their web store for free for a while. I'm not sure why they took it down, but I'm not sure if I'm allowed to share it, so I've held off for the time being. Maybe someone else has uploaded it though?
@@0Fdigital If you install the Autechre sysex data on the Monomachine, will it overwrite the factory patches? Or are the patches and patterns saved in a user space? 🤔
@@UberSynth If you have a +drive you can save them to a snapshot, otherwise, yeah, it'll overwrite what's currently loaded. I'm not entirely sure how it works without a +drive though!
@@0Fdigital "you" was intended as anyone ! I am pretty sure these files might be a good implementation to those great machines.. one thing: which machines are supported? Giving the oldness (2008) i assume they can work with the very first version of the machines..
@@arinevakaoppositaer7241 The mk1 machines are supported, but I think the machinedrum sysex uses some mk2-specific features. I'm not sure though as I don't actually have a machinedrum!
@@0Fdigital i uploaded sysex data on both MD and MM (the two are mk1).. patterns and kits work fine and are good starting point to tweak'em and make my own live set. . There are few tracks which work only with UW versions.. Also it is interesting to see AE workflow with both machines..
These patterns are very good! No offense here and all respect to AE but the Monomachine can go waaay further than this! Just listen to SOPHIE and you know what Im talking about. Peace! 💜
Lol. Sophie isn't way further than this. His stuff was just louder and more on trend. This stuff is far more sophisticated and complex than just great big ugly FM clangs ....
