they certainly help artists get opportunity, but they also seek solely to churn out marketable venture versus fostering talent and being innovative - one example that never ceases to annoy me is Selena Gomez interjecting her voice onto up and coming artist Rema's Calm Down track - they are just throwing shit at the wall hoping it will stick so they can suck out another dollar off the back of anyone. Labels aren't seeking out raw new talent, they are looking for anything marketable, hit or miss, its a risky business, but with big reward if it works (Hawk Tuah was a flop, but anyone with something that goes viral has a chance at celebrity) and if any new talent gets through and goes viral (or even zero talent), you know any existing successful celebrity or artist is going to jump on their coat tails to get that dollar. Its a nefarious industry.

THANK YOU!!!! About two years ago when the whole "industry plant" stuff came about on Tik Tok, it made a bit of sense because it was in regard to some pop-punk girl group that showed up out of nowhere and clearly wanted some Tik Tok fame and whatnot. It was obvious that they were inauthentic (not so obvious to me, lol) and so much about them was forced. Having connections, putting on a stage persona, overnight success (this one might be questionable) are not! To me, it's what that group was: obviously fake and forced! I cannot for the life of me remember the group's name, but I remember liking some of their outfits and the one song that they released was okay to me.

good networking may be a rewarding trait (being a charismatic person, or an extrovert, well connected or through nepotism) but this being the way to achieve success and recognition results in media or product that is lacking substance and is often disingenuous - thats probably why the whole industry plant concept exists - people feel like they are constantly being fooled into buying into a concept or celebrity that is devoid of anything except peddling snake oil. Commodities over time have changed drastically, media, music, cars, phones, products, anything - everything is made cheap, repurposed over and over again and sold at the highest dollar value, replaceable, meaningless, mindless - thats just my impression of what this is all about.

I have to correct you, a lot of people don’t know this and they never mention it In documentaries. But Rihanna’s producer Evan rogers who discovered her was actually married to her aunt. They were on vacation and she auditionnes for her aunt’s husband and went live with them in New Jersey. He was already an industry person.. so how u call that? Pon de replay and her whole album were ready before sending em to record labels. Jay z happened to be the first to sign because trust me other labels were down to sign her. In documentaries they brush it off and make it appear like she auditioned for a Random person

Not to discredit your point because I agree to some extent but I feel like us being upset that someone is an industry plant has less too do with jealousy and more to do with how "unfair" it is that some artists dont have to work as hard too be succesful and this comes off as lazy to consumers in a society that values hard work so this has a negative impact on an artists brand
@shanaya6831
@shanaya6831 2 месяца назад
They do work hard. You don’t get to have the spotlight unless they put in the necessary work. Just because we don’t see them going through some struggles doesn’t mean that they are not putting effort into their craft. People don’t need to suffer in order to be deserving of the opportunities they get. Suffering doesn’t necessarily make the success more deserving than the person who did not need to struggle as much (unless you’re the type of person that thinks suffering is a virtue, which is sad).

I first heard the term “industry plant” when Nicki and Cardi were beefing. Nicki didn’t say the term but she was saying they are trying to get rid of her by pushing Cardi to the top. Also, back in 1999 when Britney Spears reached superstardom with “Baby One More Time”, they immediately revolved Xtina’s first album around Britney because they wanted her to compete with Britney. That would be considered an industry plant as well technically.

Although I agree the term has gotten stretch to potentially apply to basically anyone who gets relatively popular, I still think it’s a useful concept, I still think it should be considered. Because it’s a method of questioning reality and seeking truth. Like, do I really like this or was I conditioned to like this? Is this my taste or was my taste given to me, and it’s not even aligning with what I’m truly about

An industry plant is when an artist blows up from the internet off a viral song “from their own strength”. Granted, some viral songs are organic. But a lot of stars like tyla, cardi and the old town road guy were secretly signed and had back up from their record label or the industry. U see this when they get co signed from a list celebs and do crazy numbers that surpasses the greats. But they pretend it’s organic. Back in the day, the Whitney’s, Mariah’s , Michael Jackson’s were introduced to the world by record company and they didn’t keep it secret how hard they worked on their projects a year or so before they blew up. Or how they got denied from labels. They also were open about getting vocal lessons and pr in their interviews. Sure, some things were made up to sell an image back then but the artist development was more authentic. Industry plants literally lie to their fans and everyone else to make it seem like they got lucky overnight when they had a machine behind them the entire time. It’s the Justin Bieber effect. Rags to riches

All artists that sign record label r industry plants. Freelance/street etc artists are the only one who r not idustry plants. Talent isnt enought in industry. They must have both talent and connections. It must be BOTH. But yeah some artist that have just lil talent or no talent with too much commercial or connections is f*sucks 😂. Even in the gig they cannot just have good musicianship to have good gig. They must have good performance/stage presence too. It must be BOTH. I get some of what he was saying about 50 Cent he had that image that people would look at as a so called industry plant. Knowing 50 Cent career it wasn’t even close as you said 50 Cent been around in the 90s. He signed to Jam Master Jay I believe in 97 or 98. His first appearance was on that onyx song which he actually was in the music video for. It was supposed to release that power of the dollar album until he got shot and the labels looked at him as a risk so he got dropped from Columbia, but after coming back and healing, yeah he started to make a career putting out mixtapes and had a buzz, especially in New York. It was actually Eminem who wanted to sign him and Dr. Dre came in on the deal with Eminem along with Jimmy Iovine and Interscope this way in case 50 Cent failed it didn’t fall on Eminem and Dr. Dre would take some of the blame. Also, I do think they did see the potential where he could make some hit songs and promoted them, but I don’t think they expected him to sell as much as he did. This guy 50 Cent was grinding before he signed to Eminem and Dr Dre

"Industry Plant" terminology was put into place not for the term to be abused (like you said) but to get peoplw to start seeing through the veil of the industry. I get that it's a lot of hard work on the artist's part but a push from the industry always has a hidden agenda that goes deeper than just "making money". this whole industry plant hive mind is probably a result of the commodification of music and media - talent or personality is washed out by marketing strategy, so it all comes off as disingenuous, even up and coming artists that, back in the day may have been perceived as grass roots success, are now only commodified if they are industry-washed to fit within the money making box and their lyrics or other content are dumbed down, sexualized, and feed into narratives that entice viewership. In my opinion this is just the publics discernment of the outcomes of commodification of media - a prime example is the ultimately fake feud between Monica and Brandy (The Boy is Mine) these are inherently talented artists that, in order to make money for their labels, were modified by marketing formula. Everything we see now appears as a formulaic tactic marketed to us, everything is slowly turning into an advertisement or money making scheme and the public is no longer able to trust what is being sold whether its celebrity or media.
