Autism RUINED Our Marriage

Nothing is ever that simple, it’s always what if this or what if that. In no way shape or form are we saying because our child is Autistic that we want to divorce. We are simply stating that raising a special needs child takes strength, patience and hard work TOGETHER. But in the midst of raising someone so special, it’s so easy to get lost and lose yourself because you are putting their needs above your own. Despite the joy that comes with being a parent we have to remember to carve out time for ourselves and each other.
I know it’s easy to look at someone else situation and judge or maybe even just think you have the solution but in our reality it’s not just black and white. Having to trust someone you don’t know with your child, that is Autistic and nonverbal, hoping they will understand how to meet her needs, and be able to communicate effectively can be harmful. Because if something were to happen, we’d have no true way of knowing other than behavior changes, she can easily be taken advantage of. Finding the right care takes time.
It’s a learning curve and a balance we have yet to find. I hope that in time we will ❤️

I want to give you a piece of advice. Autism is not the issue. Children with autism thrive from routines, but they also need boundaries and discipline. Sometimes we have to give each other grace and hear each point of view. My husband and I may have different approaches to parenting but we have to compromise and when it doesn't work then we go with what does. Love is rare, and maintaining healthy boundaries within our family helps to keep that going. You guys are wonderful, and I want to see you thrive. Just focus on each other and sometimes realize the full gentle approach can cause more harm than good.

From what i've noticed, a lot of times, is that one parent (usually the father), loses interest in his family when he realizes his child (ren) are special needs. It's like "since the kid isn't perfect, i'm out of here.". Then they use the issues that happen from having a special needs child as their reasons for checking out. Instead of coming together with their wife to tackle those issues. Either you want your family or you don't. No family or situation is perfect and as long as you choose to run when the going gets tough, you will be running for the rest of your life. There are no cheat codes to life; this isn't a video game. You have to get up every day and CHOOSE who and what you are going to be for your family, even when it hurts...even when you didn't get what you thought you were getting. Try to run and find "perfect" if you want, bet you don't find it.

Marriage is hard work! I got married at 18 to my husband of 38+ years. We raised 3 sons all on the Spectrum. My husband was a work aholic, and I took care of my son's needs, including homeschooling the last 2. I had no family or support groups to turn to because they had mild forms of autism. I wasn't ok at times. Today, we are all happy and successful . Don't give up! They grow out of these challenges with proper care. Nobody knew what Asperger Syndrome was in the 80s when my first child was born. I was very verbal about it 13 years later when we got him diagnosed . Fight !

I have a friend who was told by the pediatrician to treat that child the same as she treated her older son. You are gentle with her, however, you cannot allow her to take over your bed, pushing one parent out. Was it a sleep problem related to Autism or was she doing what most children her age do when they awaken at night? Talk more about getting her into school and therapy. Is there a therapist who visits the school? That will give you time to yourself. Mikko is non-verbal, and smart. She likely understands more than you you think, and she uses it to her advantage. Try using a tone that is stern so that she learns it is not all about her. How will you handle stimming now that she is a little older? Will it be that she is comforted or is the situation where you can let her calm down on her own? The child I mentioned is now a young man in his early twenties and he functions very well. I hope you two can get your marriage back on track. ❤

I agree with this 100 percent. I work with children with autism and parents always mention how much they depend on respite hours for their sanity and to get things done. They also really value the time their kids are at school. They also really depend on ABA in my area. There’s a lot of controversy about ABA and if it’s right for children with autism but a lot of parents won’t even dream of giving it up because some of these kids get in home ABA up to 5 hours per day 5 days per week, literally from the time they get home from school until bed time and the parents really lean on that support. Some of the kids don’t sleep at night and have pretty significant behaviors. It’s a lot to handle. It definitely takes a village.

Agreed... I have a friend who has a few special needs kids she was trying to do everything to help and teach them and it completely wore her down. I told her don't be afraid to get the kids help she's not superwoman. She didnt listen and is still trying to doing everything and is still stressed to the max. Getting help doesn't mean you are a failure you just understand even as moms we have our limited.

@@andreyacreative6748 The parents just look so exhausted. I worked in the school system here where I live. I know that they have classes for kids with autism like Miko and they learn to a lot. It’s good for her to be around other kids. She could learn to communicate in others ways behind crying when she is trying to communicate with her parents. She is such a pretty little girl. Split-tin image of her father. I have a cousin that has autism and he attends school. He doesn’t talk at all but with school he still seems to do what most kids do. But you know we don’t know the whole story only what we see. Only they know the degree of autism that she has. I pray that as she gets older she can live a normal life. I pray the family stay together. You can tell she loves her father. He seems to be able to clam her down.

This kind of reminded me of the Proud Family reboot when the Prouds found out that Bebe was autistic. They ended up finding him a daycare for children with autism, and it helped him. Maybe finding a playgroup for Mikko every once in a while will give you two the needed break. Also, with the food aversion thing, I kind of understand where your husband is coming from. Yes, autistic children go through spells of not liking food, but they learn how to manipulate just like other kids do.

You two have had more than your fair share of challenges come your way and your relationship is actually stronger than you both think. You are able to communicate your feelings honestly and that’s a healthy thing. Nobody signs up for the situation you are both in but you’re doing so well to manage your situation as best you can for your child and each other. I really hope you both find happiness in life with or without each other x

Marriage and parenting in itself is difficult, but men and women also handle things and think very differently. We do not have autism in our family, but my husband and I raised our 5 living bio children plus two foster children. We learned a great deal when our 2nd child was stillborn. I was broken, and to me, if felt like he just got over it and didn't grieve our son much. I resented that a lot. It wasn't until his best friend opened up to me two years later, telling me how much my husband grieved and that he was trying so hard to be strong to get me through it. We talked openly then, and it was the first time I saw him break down, sharing how they let him say goodbye to our son, while they wheeled me into surgery, with his thinking he would lose me too. Just keep communicating and sharing your perspectives and what you are seeking in terms of support from one another. I lost my husband at only 45, when our children were ages 6 through 23 yrs old. Savor every moment with each other.

Help each other with chores, childcare, shopping etc. Split everything and make kids responsible for folding their clothes, picking up toys, etc. There is a lot kids can do to help while building up their self esteem. As a parent of two little girls, my oldest age 4 who is on the autism spectrum and the other age 2, not on the autism spectrum. I can say my husband and I share similar experiences, “gentle family”. Children, teens, adults on the spectrum are not the same..hence, why it’s called “ spectrum”. And every family every relationship and marriage is different. Needless to say… I empathize and sympathize with you both!! My husband and I have been together 17 years, and we were informed in 2022 that our now 4 year old was on the spectrum. From that day on it changed the dynamics of what we call “ life”. What keep us together and to work hard at keeping our relationship our marriage strong and united is GOD, praying, our open line of Communication with each other and understanding each other’s feelings, thoughts and emotions when it comes to just about anything! You guys are amazing! Mikko is blessed to have you guys! ❤ Peace and Blessings to your family and your union, “ Gentle Family “ Love from Milwaukee!❤
