In this video, Laura talks about why females hide their autism.
Laura James is a confident, high-achieving woman in a long-term relationship. She is also a mother, successful journalist and last but not least, a woman on the autistic spectrum.
Laura was finally diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome in her forties. She now feels 'validated' in her assumptions that there was something more to her cognitive differences than merely personality-type.
In common with many other adults-both male and female-that have had a late diagnosis of this complex developmental condition, Laura appears to have benefited greatly. She has developed a much greater level of self-awareness and learned to live-life in a way that works for her.
Post-diagnosis, Laura can now move forward with a new confidence. She is 'out' and proud..
She is happy to be an autistic woman in a neurotypical world.

I remember copying everyone and called it 'changing my personality'. I hid it so well that no one knew I was autistic in school and so I had a mental breakdown as I had no help with exams or managing my time. I'm only just recovering from this at 22

I was just diagnosed at the age of 21 and I can seriously relate to that. For me, ever since I can remember (and even now) I thought my voice sounded to different, so I change it to a lower "little girl" type voice when I speak to others. I never played with the other kids and rarely talked because I was so different. It's great to know why my life has been so complicated. My mom always told me that I could control it and I still try to explain to her that I can't, but she just doesn't get it. Thank you for these videos.

Hi thanks for your message. I think that its not a case of 'controlling' Its more important to find a way of getting through life in a way that feels right for you. Best wishes Steve

Watching a number of videos on autism, I have to wonder why it is assumed that males don't mask in the same way as females? As a male, I too automatically did what I could do to fit in and appear like others. I didn't manage particularly well but I knew early on I was different and I didn't want to be different. I wanted to present myself in ways that didn't make me stand out or draw attention to myself.
