In this first interview in the series, I talk to Lucy. She is a thirty year old woman that was diagnosed with Aspergers syndrome at the age of nineteen. This diagnosis came after years of depression, anxiety, auditory processing and social problems. I have worked with Lucy at the National Autistic Society in London for the past six years, and have always admired her for the care, expertise and compassion she brings to the autistic adults we work with.
Like me, Lucy has been able to use her own experience as an autistic person, combined with years of experience and training to make a real difference to many adults struggling with autism.

Lovely video truly. I have 70 years of "un-diagnosed" Autism and call myself Aspergican, as preference to SAYING ASSS-BURRGERS!!. As this nice gentlemen and lady put well, feeling different comes with the territory. I personally achieved, learned and moved on day after day~~> mostly thru seeking solitude, avidly, and tolerating dealing with others with great difficulty and near total loss of all inter-personal relationships, total. Oh well.... When the true meaning of being a human finally comes to light, we will understand how ancient and bazaar our species really is. I have come to the conclusion that we were part of a very, VERY long ago, ancient, breeding system from some sort of earthly or non-earthly civilization. When we feel of another tribe, like sitting thru social situations feeling like you don't speak their language at all, then this can cause us a panic attack or social aphasia were we can shut out or exclude others, leading to them shunning us and understandably!! ~~~solitude is our blessing - to be fully embraced~~~ What were we breed for, you might ask? Of what use is a person with a high pain threshold, able to withstand long periods of solitude in sometimes harsh conditions and be content, intelligent and highly reasoning with ability to act without great regard for others emotions or feelings yet is loyal with high levels, very high, of mental concentration, and is highly perceptive beyond the normal perceived senses, WELL BEYOND????? ~~~~This warrior breed would be highly sought after~~~~ . Could we be the most mis-understood sub-species of human on earth, now??

Hi SBS I'm really glad you enjoyed the video of my interview with Lucy. You make some interesting comments about being an "older" person on the spectrum. My own experience of being diagnosed at 48, inspired me to set up this youtube channel. Us older autistics need to get the word out that we exist. We have always existed way before the invention of Vaccinations etc. It's just that Autism wasn't really called Autism you and I were young. Best wishes Steve www.adultswithautism.org.uk

As mother used to say so often Steve!! "boy, it is just you". Well, apparently it is more than just me, in fact I am part of a larger type of human, possibly deserving its own species designation. Bit of a push maybe, but when we were younger the world was less polluted and now children, after generational planned poisoning, are autistic this and autistic that. Sometimes it is hard to see the larger personality shape when hyperactivity/drugs drowns out their autism. Why so many obese in schools these days, and adults!!!! Autism is not a result of the poisoning rather added complications toward the already sick child or adult. Answer~~~>remove the friggen toxins ASAP beginning with clean distilled water and organic food ONLY and put coffee where the sun don't shine!. I won't rant~~~>but I will check out your web site Steve, I need a support group, thanks and peace.

Not just man's best friend, but Lucy too. :-) It would so good to see your service dog helping you. They (dogs) offer nothing but unconditional love and protectiveness. I'm sure your family and friends can feel safer knowing your service dog is there for you in those desperate times. Great job you did in training him (or her)?

My parents never noticed anything, except of criticizing and blaming me for not fitting in, because they were only interested into their own problems and greediness and mishappenings in life, so they always had a lack of observation for their own child...superficial people...even the doctors until now, were too stupid to see it, so that I have to mention it to them , with now 27 years old..

I was diagnosed at 36 and I can really relate to the frustration (and anger, perhaps) that you feel about your parents misunderstanding of your experience and the blame that comes with it. I'm so sorry you felt this. The level of self doubt that can stem from this type of thing can be especially crippling due to its pervasiveness. I was literally taught not to believe what we are experiencing is real, the implications of this rage from annoying to tragic. I've worked hard to come to a place of peace with my parents simply not knowing any better...back then even well educated people including my doctors and teachers didn't pick up on my very classic symptoms. To you and anyone else with whom this message resonates-I wish you the very best.

That should say that was was taught to believe that what I was experiencing was NOT real* I have no idea how to edit a comment.

IM glad I'm not alone... whilst my parents didn't do exactly the same.. I had several "meltdowns" and basically was treated as aproblem child. They were very strict and I didn't understand their rules. Now, when I am thinking there is apossibility that I am Aspie, they reject it, my Dad gets angry and my Mum says 'it's just how you are' and thinks I'm trying to retrospectively explain my behaviour during adolescence through a label. It's very alienating and I don't feel supported whatsoever. There is such a stgma.. They barely accept that I struggle with anxiety. It's hard

+Lydia C that is tough. It's so hard for them to understand...and sometimes their attempts at being helpful are exactly the opposite. I can really relate to your comment.

Sunshine Shortcake I've kinda shut down since then.. It's hard for me to talk about without getting choked up, because I feel that I'm wasting the efforts in explaining myself. The feelings of feeling misunderstood are horrific!

I've just found this and was diagnosed AS at 19 also in 1997 and recently with PDA and ADD, related conditions .I didn't feel different just thought I was mentally ill or mentally disabled.I was bullied in my special school and walked out aged 17 and used to get aggressive.I was manipulative, angry and used to be obsessed with lads ,I get obsessivecutting out pictures, articles, following and taking photos etc its embarrassing.I'm 36 now and I am angry I wasted years on boyfriends who were all dodgy.I knew they were but dated them to "be normal"

If you asked my parents about me they'll tell you lies. But a professional would hopefully spot the aspie ness in my father. And his father...
