Autistic Spiky Skill Sets 

I'm pretty bad in most things people-related.

I am brain dead today, but still want to leave a comment for the algorithm/to support your channel.

It upsets me that people told you to "just study" math, because it's not something one _can_ just study. I'm lucky in that I'm predisposed to logic so math was my best subject and from what I remember of teaching other kids after class you can't just throw problems at people or do it for them over and over again - you have to identify what they're not getting and do your best to break it down into simpler terms. So I don't understand how a person could just study if they're not already good at it in the first place, you can't explain things to yourself when you don't get them in the first place - someone has to do the explaining for you first

I relate so incredibly strongly to this video, you basically said my experience, even with understanding science until maths gets involved and then I totally get lost. Love your content, it's very comforting to me as a fellow autistic person.

Awww I'm terrible at food logistics. I (in theory) make a stir fry every Friday, and 50% of the time, there's an ingredient missing or I thought it was fine but it's bad, or I forgot to take the chicken out of the freezer. I used to work at an art supply store, and it was great (until it was ruined by toxic management who didn't care about art supplies). I was around art supplies all day, I was able to blather to other people about them under the guise of customer service, got to sort them and organize them and make them look nice. I mean, making sure that the nearly-identical-looking graphite pencils were in the right bins sorted by hardness of the graphite? Yes please! Un-randomizing tubes of paint after they had been carelessly put back by customers? Yes please! But I do wish customers weren't allowed to touch certain things, like tubes of paint or nice paper, because they'd get paint ooze everywhere, or touch the paper with their food-y fingers.

This is sickeningly accurate to my experience throughout school. I’ve never heard of “spiky skillset” but it describes me perfectly, thank you for introducing me to that concept. I always get really down on myself about how bad I am at most things. I cried ALL the time in math and sometimes science, especially chemistry (math + science, shoot me) but english was a breeze and i could write like nobody’s business, and ask me to do a creative project and it was done the next day, whereas i procrastinated everything else til the last second. Its not like i want be this way, but it’s difficult finding stability and consistency for some reason. Also, my dream job is to be a receptionist and I’ve been telling people this for a long time, even though people think it’s silly, i think it’s the perfect job, so it was funny you mentioned that. I feel like we have the same brand of autism.

You explained this so well. It's the hardest topic for me to make others understand.

My monotropic mind makes my skill set sooooo spikey xD, got so many skills mainly in arts, creative things & programming but can I monetise it, nope T.T

Thanks for explaining a spiky profile. That makes a lot of sense. I had a neuropsych assessment a while ago and they had told me that my performance was sort of all over the place. I think spiky profile is what they meant. One of the examples is that I had an exceptionally high score on logic and spacial reasoning but then with spoken verbal skills was slightly below average.

I know what you mean with this. I have moments in my life with this. I do what I can do, but find other things hard.

My mom likes to say that my lack of skills and a life in general are all my own fault, and I sit there like, "Dude... I'm autistic. You knew from when I was a toddler that I was autistic, even without a diagnosis because it was the 90s and it was hard for girls to get one. YOU. KNEW. And you did NOTHING to help me except homeschool me." Like, I asked for help with writing a resume because I thought it was time for me to try applying for jobs. Mom responded by sending me links to sites that tell you what to put on a resume when you have little to no work experience, but it all seemed to revolve around volunteer work and education, which for me was very spotty. Dad responded by saying that I "had a template in Microsoft Word, so just use that." (I didn't. I had a template for making business cards.) My sister said she'd help while she was home from university, but then forgot. My brother had already moved out by then and couldn't even be bothered to visit unless I emailed him to tell him he had mail to pick up. I even sought out an occupational therapist, and while she was nice, she didn't really help with writing a resume.

Spiky skill sets are very relatable, to bad they're not the skill ssociety or the job-market are looking for :p Failing school (or getting failed by school?) with straight A's. And autistic burnout, it is a ***** Many of us had it I assume, did you? how did you deal with it?

I interpreted the bible very literally when I read it. Maybe that's something autistic people are more likely to do? But through experience I now interpret it very differently
