German here: Keeping space between the to leftmost lanes in a traffic jam is entirely purposed to let emergency vehicles pass. Bikes use it as well, but especially on hot days this is commonly considered okay because they are getting really hot in their clothes, with a hot machine right under them. Without the airflow they might overheat and suffer health issues.

@@gudrunlacht7454 yes, it is forbidden, and no one told otherwise. But it is generally conisdered okay by the people building the emergency lane, noone said otherwise, hence my information is correct. I am just documenting my (and others) observations. ...And then there are a few People called "Paragraphenreiter" (liek you seem to be one), that call bikers out for it. Put yourself in their (the biker's) situation and reconsider your thinking.
@TecTurtle3
@TecTurtle3 3 года назад
@@Todbrecher Actually at least since the last update on the regarding laws it is absolutely forebidden to use the Emergency Lane for any trafic, except rescue, police and so on. In the case bikers are getting into trouble due to weather they are recommended by the police to use the side strip of the road with slow speed to get to a place with shaddow to cool down or leave the Autobahn. But this is also only a recommendation. As far as I know there were no cases at court so far for bikers using the side lane right to the street since the last law update. Using the rescue lane is an absolute no-go and will const a lot of fine.
@Todbrecher
@Todbrecher 3 года назад

I've heard and said it quite a few times, and _for the most part,_ it does actually work out like that (whether the individual ones actually do respect each other or "just" act as if they do). Of course there are exceptions, and the level of mutual respect vs. egotism varies regionally quite a lot (judging this from years of driving ~2000km per week all over Germany). But even taking all that into account, it's _noticeably_ better than in a lot of other countries...

Fun fact: The Autobahn is the safest road in Germany, calculated by accident/mile or injuries/mile. The accident count is a third of those on US highways. Josh perfectly got the rules right, and he even guessed right: The lane in the middle is kept open for police and rescue vehicles. It is mandatory, by the way. It's an emergency lane the cars in the traffic jam "creates". It's a law now (and cost a lot if you do not do it) and mandatory. - Traffic jam could be because of an Accident and Police and Ambulance needs to pass.
@Otte74
@Otte74 5 лет назад
DSP16569 quite easy to learn - just look at your right hand. The gap is always between the thumb an the second finger. So if there are three lanes, the emergency lane will be between the left one and the one in the middle.
@stephanweinberger
@stephanweinberger 5 лет назад
The rule is simple: everybody goes to the right, except the leftmost lane which goes to the left. As soon as traffic starts to slow down drivers should start to move to the sides. The reasoning behind an emergency lane on the left side of the road is twofold: 1. onramps, where drivers might not expect emergency vehicles from behind; 2. trucks, which are usually driving on the slower (right) lanes and are not as maneuverable as the cars on the left lanes. Although there is usually a breakdown lane on the right side of the roadway this is often not really usable for emergency vehicles at high speed (because 1. it is usually narrower than a regular lane, it might not be available on bridges or in tunnels, or it might actually be occupied by broken down vehicles which cannot move out of the way).

And how fast you can end up in a coffin. The overall number of accidents is actually greater on the sections with speed limits, but this is hardly surprising, because the speed limits were imposed as calming measures on particularly dangerous stretches and known blackspots. However, the number of KSi's (people Killed or Seriously Injured) is much higher on the unrestricted sections. The DVR put this increase at 25 per cent in 2008, but a 2019 study found it was 75 per cent. If we take the average of these two figures, a fifty per cent increase is hardly piffling, and casts more than a little doubt on the wisdom of the concept. Yes, you can get places quickly, but there's also less chance of getting there _at all._ Better late than never, in my books.

Your guess was absolutely right. The reason why cars on the right lane drive left of the lane and vice versa, is simply to create a lane for emergency vehicles, in Germany we call it "Notgasse" (Emergency Lane). Not creating it or blocking it in some other kind of way is also punishable by law.

This. I made this mistake in my first month driving on German roads. You need to realise cars in the left lane can and will sometimes be driving DOUBLE your speed. One second they look like they are over 100 meters away. The next they are passing you. Imagine sitting in a stationary vehicle and a car blasting past you at 120km/h. This is the sort of speed difference you have to reckon with. I quickly learned this fact and never made the same mistake again. Double and triple check you mirrors because it's not always obvious when a distant car is moving at those speeds. You need to look twice to see how much closer they are.

Same here in the Netherlands. I think you are right, it's more a climate thing for temperature control during winters. I understand it makes less sense in the south of the USA where it's warm anyways, but It makes me wonder what houses are like in the colder states up north/north east. Although, I guess it could make sense when you are in such a hot climate during summers that you're always running your air conditioning, you could just cool the space you're actually using during the day.

Driving on the right is called “Rechtsfahrgebot”, moving to the side is the “Rettungsgasse” for the ambulance etc and everything at a highway stop is crazy expensive

The gap in dense traffic is called a „Rettungsgasse“ which basically means „Emergency lane“ and its for emergency vehicles to pass as fast as possible in case of an accident. Its actually mandatory and theoretically you could get fined if you don’t keep it.

So I'm actually munching on a bag of Haribo gummy bears when that truck drove by...ALSO! IF you all haven't when you visit Germany, you definitely should go to Bonn and visit the original Haribo factory! I studied abroad there in college and it was amazing to check out! Fun Fact: "Haribo" is a combination of the creators name and the city they originated from "HAns RIegel, BOnn" anyways...enough random fun facts...hope your enjoying Scandinavia! 😊

Passport Two, there is currently a small factory in Bonn-Kessenich, which will probably not exist in the next few years, because Haribo in the Grafschaft (about 30 kilometers south of Bonn away, near Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler, Rheinland-Pfalz) a new and bigger factory has built. Wherever you can get a tour quite well, are at the Ford works in Cologne and at the airport Cologne / Bonn. In Bonn, the Beethoven House and the government district are well worth seeing.

that big line in the middle is called „rettungsgasse“ and the german emergency people (like police or ambulances) love you if you do it the right way lmao

"safe speed depends on the conditions" - wise words! ... Always drive save. And "save" means - be prepared to compensate not only your own but also other ppls errors. I say this as a german driver with more than 0.5 million Kilometers on the record, and never even envolved in an accident. Always drive carefully and be prepared for things going wrong. And about that going super fast on the Autobahn: 1. you need the right car, 2. the right Autobahn at the right time (or youll get stuck in a traffic jam) 3. the skill to drive a car at that speed. You really need to consider all this before you "go crazy" on the Autobahn. Love you all, stay save!

The main reason for the gap is that emergency vehicles like police or ambulance can pass the traffic and reach the accident as quickly as possible.

Ashley saying by to the cars that you're passing is the best thing !

You are absolutly right about the "Rettungsgasse". It directly translates to "rescue alleyway" The cars on the left go to the left and the cars on the other lanes go to the right so there is enough space for ambulance, firefighters and police. It's also not just a recommendation but as a driver on the german Autobahn you have to do it. If you block any of the rescue vehicles you may have to pay a fine! (Motorcycles of course tend to use the lane technically they aren't allowed tho)

As a German, I would say the wrong car and the wrong time of day. Sunday morning at sunrise, with as much horsepower as you can get! There is nothing better than driving over the highway at 250 km / h in the morning light with beautiful music. That refreshes your thoughts.

Staying right unless passing is also a rule in the US as far as I remember. Just nobody does it and isn't enforced. Last time I was in Germany, I was driving a Mustang and took it up to 240Km/H. Only possible because german drivers respect road rules. I wouldn't dare do it here in France where I live...

The most dangerous part on the Autobahn are distracted drivers- looking to the camera, talking with both hands,….

9:20 ; If we Germans drive that much left (or right, depending on which lane of a multi-track road you drive), we're opening a "Rettungsgasse" which means "emergency lane (*only* for ambulance and police)", to make sure the "Krankenwagen" (ambulance) can pass fast. Motorcyclists are usually not allowed to drive in the Rettungsgasse.
