Autobianchi A112: The Italian Mini

With over 1.2 million units sold over a 17 years production run, the A112 has been the most successful model wearing the long-discontinued Autobianchi badge. And for good reasons.
Small, cheap to run, yet stylish, the #Autobianchi #A112 was tailor-made for the Italian market, which embraced it right away. By the time the upmarket Elegant and the sporty #Abarth joined the range, in 1971, Autobianchi had already built over 200.000 A112s, and yearly sales for the Milanese brand peaked at nearly 114.000 units in 1973, the year of the A112's first restyling.
Production of the A112 at Autobianchi's Desio factory ended in early 1986, one year after the presentation of the stylish, innovative Y10, which would be the last ever model to wear the Autobianchi badge.

When I was on holiday as a child in Italy during the mid/late 2000s I remember seeing quite a number of those cars. Mostly in boring colors with faded plastic bumpers. Back then I always thought they were some kind of Mini Cooper. The A112 and the Y10 (which I thought was a weird Cinquecento) were really fascinating because you rarely ever see them in Germany.

Α112 was unbelievably popular in Greece, throughout its life-span! Most new drivers learn how to drive in one of these! So popular it was, there was even a song called "I 'll never again do it in an Autobianchi!" (yes, "do it" is referring to what you guess!)

Some lyrics of the song (badly translated): "I 'll never again do it in an Autobianchi never again, I swear, no matter what you say! My left hand gets out of the window, the handbreak press against my back the car is small and narrow and I get squeezed, let's hope I won't come out of here with discopathy! I'm 1.84 in height, but i crawl beside you, to become 1.50! Don't be so hasty and horny, I got the steering under my shoulder and the gear leaver in my eye! My feet feel crumpy and hard to move, don't push so hard, the metal will be torn apart! Damn those tiny cars! - no, I never did it in a Cortina! What a strange place to put the hand-brake, but the reverse is enough break, I guess. When you touch me, everything is rolling - oh, no they don't, the car is! Don't stop now, on the best part - Now, look where they put that kiosk, in the middle of nowhere, down hill !!"

Had an early chrome bumper model in green and found a later model Abarth in my favorite Scrapyard, so took the carburettor airfilter, exhaust manifold and the steel 'Abarth' wheels and fitted them to my car, I had a rev counter on the dashboard (of course ) and it looked stunning for me. Of course we always had a Fiat 850 a Special or Coupé in the family as spare car, since these were so cheap to run. What I remember is a friend who drove a 6 cylinder Camaro and while he tried to show off at the traffic light accelarating away, my A112 was next to his big American, unfortunately where we were racing there was a tunnel with a fast left right, I was the smart one to hit my brakes and let him go, very lucky because he needed arms and legs and all of the road to keep his big floating boat under control away from the tunnel walls. I sold the Autobianchi for another Italian : a real Innocenti Cooper 1300, but as Matteo would say, that is another story for another time but I loved the grasping sound the A 112 exhaust made, a great little drivers car, technically far superior to an 850 Fiat. By the way, for me the Abarth is the real first ever made hot hatch, the rest joined the party much much later ! Ciao !

I wanted one of these (A112 Abarth) as a teenager and early young driver, but because I lived in London, I bought an Alfasud 1.3 4 door instead. So I got my ´Fix´of a nice rorty exhaust anyway. My sister bought a second hand Autobianchi A112 (base) from 1970, with the chrome bumpers. I think I drove more kilometers in it than she did. I drove all over Europe with that car from the Netherlands. North Cape, Germany, Belgium, the Alps. Everywhere. No it was not comfy, but it was fun. It was not fast, but it was fun. And we only had a generator failure and excessively worn brake pads in all those vacations. It used barely any oil and the fuel consumption was about 7.5 l/100km which was excellent as we drove it in a spirited way and there was no aarodynamics in those days. It survived 166000 km. It succumbed to rust, but the engine was still as good as new.
@Matteo_Licata
@Matteo_Licata 3 года назад
Thank you for sharing with me these cool memories you have with the A112. Yes, pretty much all A112s were discarded for rust issues rather than engine failure, much like the 127s. But, as you said, it was fun! That’s an element I think we lost on modern small cars. They’re great in many ways, but none of them is good fun to drive anymore

Haha finally the video I have been waiting for! The Autobianchi A112 was such a fantastic and underrated supermini, especially the Abarth version. I met loads of people who foster good memories about this car, and literally noone with bad memories. It was just loads of fun! With this one you have now covered in total 10 cars that I actually own or have owned, after the Alfa Giulia, Alfa 33, Alfa 75, Fiat X1/9, Fiat 500, Lancia Delta (original one), Lancia Fulvia coupé, Fiat Coupè, and last but not least the Citroen DS. Thanks Matteo for this great but too short video! The A112 would merit a 2-hour long documentary to cover its full story. Fun fact: the A112 Abarth was in 1971 the first ever hot hatch, years before VW, Ford, Renault or Talbot!

These are nice looking cars that have aged gracefully. The rear bustle is slightly reminiscent of the Simca 1100. The blue colour of the one featured appears to be the same used by Zastava/Yugo in the late 1980s-90s. The successor Y10 was sold in the UK but only under the Lancia marque.
@Matteo_Licata
@Matteo_Licata 3 года назад
The A112 itself was also marketed as a Lancia on a few export markets, starting from 1982. That rear bustle was a request from Gaudenzio Bono, as he wanted the car to look less like a hatchback.

I can actually sit 'behind' the wheel and ride like in a small sportscar rather than crouching on top of the column like commanding a shrunken Bedford .. and nowadays strictly into the factory design of the cars, back in the 80's I loved a friends Abarth refined by a german tuner named 'Angsten' (who did the 127 as well) .. it was a stunning wide and low missile for the old Brenner road and from Vipiteno we just caught the windshadow of a bighunk BMW to rev her into lipstickred . what a time :))))))

A great little car. And as always, great presentation Matteo. Here in Norway those was sold by Saab dealers as Lancia. Currently one for sale for 31.000 nok now. But sadly i don’t have space for it. Are you going to do the bianchini soon? 🤓

So there were others in the line before the X1/9? Never knew that.
@Matteo_Licata
@Matteo_Licata 3 года назад
Yes. "X1/Something" was a system pf project codenames implemented by Dante Giacosa in the late 60s, and that was used throughout the 70s. The series went as high as "X1/38" (the Ritmo/Strada), to give you an idea. But the X1/9 was the only one for which the project code was also used as a commercial name.

speeding through every sharp corner was real fun on 3 wheels! i miss the lil abarth which was taken by the harsh German TÜV rules... but unfortunately they were right, because 700kg of rust were kept together by 7kg of paint! not the best balance D/A/G

I can imagine: these cars tended to rust quickly even in Italy's milder climate, so I can only imagine how bad corrosion could get on these in Germany

Also, I much prefer the Autobianchi to the Mini. I have owned Mini and they are too dangerous in a crash due to design.
@wickiezulu

Considering the later Fiat Panda and Fiat Cinquecento were equipped with the 126’s 2-cylinder engines, could a case have been made for an entry-level 2-cylinder version of the Autobianchi A112 in place of both the 126 as well as Dante Giacosa’s other unrealised ideas to replace the Fiat 500 (one of which may have been a 850 flat-twin FWD city car)? Apparently a 2-door three-box saloon version of the A112 was looked at, either as a different bodystyle for a more direct visual successor to the Fiat 850 or proposed by a conservative minded anti-hatchback faction within Fiat at the time (hence why the 127 initially did not feature a hatchback and why Zastava / Yugo went on to build a hatchback version of the 128). Would have preferred a version of the A112 Abarth that in terms of displacement was a more direct rival to the 1275cc Minis, get the impression the 100 Series engine was capable of growing beyond 1050cc via the 1962 Simca Abarth 1300 since the Abarth built engine was said to have been derived from the architecture of the 100 Series-derived 982cc Twin-Cam Bialbero engine. Guess one consideration against further enlargement of the 100 Series engine (and possible conversion to OHC/etc like the larger 124 Series engine), was the upcoming OHC 128 Series engine that was to also form the basis of the 130 V6. Speaking of the Y10 project, actually prefer the facelift proposals of the A112 by Pininfarina, Giugiaro/Ital Design and even Zagato’s 1977 facelift proposal in place of the A112 Series 4. It would have also arguably made a better basis for the Yugo Koral instead of what was essentially the SWB Fiat 127 equivalent of the SWB Peugeot 104 Coupe.
@Matteo_Licata
@Matteo_Licata 3 года назад
I don't know if such an idea was ever considered, but I guess it didn't fit with the A112's slightly more upmarket image
@wickiezulu
@wickiezulu 3 года назад
It would not necessarily hurt the A112’s upmarket image if it featured 2-cylinder models, the Bianchina did make use of them and could be justified as a nod to the previous model. It would also allow Fiat to test the waters on demand for a 2-cylinder FWD model (one already related to the 127, 128 and X1/9) in the 70s beyond the Honda N600 as well as help capitalise on the fuel crisis period. Essentially it would have potentially been more cost effective to further widen the appeal of the A112 with 652-704+ (e.g. Giannini GPA 800) twins and/or lower spec 767-843 fours, in addition to higher spec 1050+ models.

The Y10 used a modified Panda floorpan, which was then used for the Panda itself from 1986 onwards.

Matteo, I am struggling with a minor detail, you said that Innocenti cleverly market the mini as a....? To Fiat. I have watched and rewatched it but I can't get that word and that was stuck in my mind... Nothing really important but I am curious about what did I miss there.

@@Matteo_Licata thanks! I was understanding a completely different thing! This away, I can sleep tonight! Curiously, in retrospect, I would say a 1960-70's Fiat would be a cut above any BMC product but in fact, at the time, the mini would appear a cut above the fiat 600. At least more sofisticated than the 600.

A good success in France (excellent Chardonnet importer who knew how to build an aggressive but fine image), Switzerland and Greece. But in Italy young people really competed to get it (because then the girls liked it a lot)

So Autobianchi effectively became Lancia?
@Matteo_Licata
@Matteo_Licata 3 года назад
Kinda. From the mid-70s, Autobianchis were sold through Lancia dealers. Then, during the 80s, Fiat decided to sell the Autobianchis as Lancias outside Italy. By 1995, the Y10's replacement, the first Y, was a Lancia full stop. It's been a gradual process, at least from an Italian perspective.

My cousin in Ragusa , Sicily had one of these little rockets. I visited him in 1977,and asked me if I wanted to test drive it. His was a 1977 model A112 Abarth, dark blue and very nice interrior. I was amazed at how quick and agile this car was, and it coped with twisty mountain roads with ease, I absolutely loved it and makes me sad that Autobianchi has gone forever.
