Brandon here back with another new 2 minute tuesday!
In todays video take a look at one of the most googled autocad questions: How to Change Units in AutoCAD! It's always surprising to me how often this question along with how to convert units in Autocad comes up. It seems like it should be easy and straight forward, but it isn't. It's actually kind of hard to find the command and figure out exactly which options you want to be choosing in the process.
This method can also be used to convert your drawings (dwg) units from one to the other, effectively scaling all of your objects.
If you want to keep up to date with new videos, be sure to subscribe to the channel and check out my blog, cadintentions.com.
Oh and let me know what autocad tip, trick or tutorial you'd like to see in the next one down below!
Cheers and thanks for watching

I followed tons of tutorials, but none of them could help me. This vid is my lifesaver. I can't figure out why adjusting UNITS didn't work, it needs to be changed in 'Dwgunits'. Thanks a lot.

Hey Brandon, great video! I followed step by step with yours and after -dwgunits conversion I got the E showing up and when I type distance it says 0.00E+00 (read only) - not sure where I went wrong, any ideas? Appreciate any help! Thanks a lot in advance.

Brandon, good afternoon; if I have blocks edited in Metric system it is possible to use them in Imperial System?, and which factor to apply? If any, at download them? I mean Block units are in Inches (Imperial Units) to be used on Metric System. I will appreciate your professional assistance, Sandor

Hi Brandon, How can I get the (dwgunits) list on the screen. It got it just on the command bar. THanks

Hi Brandon. Just so that I'm clear on this. The drawing of the floor plan was in feet and inches. By using the dwgunits command and selecting meters etc. etc. the entire drawing will now display it's dimensions in meters. Also, if I were to import another drawing that was drawn in feet and inches, it too would be automatically scaled to meters? Can or should these settings (dwgunits) be incorporated into your typical sheet setup protocol?Gerry / Coquitlam

Hi Gerry, Sorry for the slow reply, just catching up now. Yes, that's correct, a line for instance that is measured using the distance command to be 3m long if dwgunits is set to meters, would then measure using the distance command around 9.84 ft if the dwgunits were switched to feet. Effectively scaling your objects so the are the correct size in the specified units of the drawing. This won't however change you styles for text, dims, annotation etc.. since that is controlled by the drawing template, ie. imperial or metric. If you've created your typical sheet/templates for imperial or metric versions, it is defintely a good idea to check that the dwg units are set to match accordingly. In general these units don't come into use a lot when using plain AutoCAD, but do have consequences if set incorrectly. Especially if the drawings are sent out and someone imports them into say civil 3d, revit, or any software where units and real world coordinates matter quite a bit. Things can come in oversized, too small, or in the wrong location completely. Hope that helps and thanks again for watching and for the comment!!

@@Cadintentions Hi Brandon, Thanks for the video. Further to this point, I work in a Civil design team and find errors in drawings sent to us regularly. If you received a drawing or opened someone else's model and saw the model was obviously drawn in meters but units were mistakenly set to millimeters how would you ensure the geographic location of the model (typically a site layout) was now in its correct location after using the -DWGUNITS command and scaling the model objects?
