Great summary. Best way to optimize dioptric correction is to look at the informational display in the viewfinder rather than the subject. If the dioptric correction is wrong, the display of settings like f stop and shutter speed will be blurred. So, ignore the subject and adjust the correction to make the display items sharp. The subject will follow.

Thanks Arthur. I have found, when teaching guests, that most guests struggle to see those settings when they have problems with their vision. They get frustrated when they can't find it as it is small. They find it easier to find an elephant and see the elephant pop into focus 🙂

I had an autofocus problem that I couldn't figure out how to fix. I took my camera/lens to my favorite camera store and initially they couldn't figure it out either. Apparently one of my camera settings was interfering with the autofocus. Once the settings were reset to factory settings I didn't have any problems with autofocus. Since then I have customized my camera settings and haven't had any issues.

Hi Danielle, great trouble shooting video. I notice that you do not mention "fine tuning" of the lenses? I have a Nikon D500 and it has an "automatic" system, but I have had a specialist adjusting mine and it helps a lot for sharp photos!

Hello, yes it would definitely help if you have an issue with sharp photos. But it won't interfere with the camera's autofocus operation/attempts 🙂

Thank you for this video. Very informative. I have an EF 17-85 with an auto focus issue. 17 up to 35 auto focuses fine but from 50 - 85 does not. It continues to attempt to focus. I have hear the lens trying to focus. Sometimes it does focus but it is blurred. I see that there is some dust on the inside at the front of the lens. Could this be the issue?

Any advice for focusing manually in low light? So low that AF doesn't work? Even manually, I can't get a lock, like the Canon R5 has that aid with the 3 lines that align when critical focus is achieved. The lines try to align, come very close but then nothing happens.

Please note with some OMS/Olympus lenses, there is a autofocus/manual focus clutch on the lens barrel that can easily be moved inadvertently. This is my most common reason for autofocus failure.

Hi Danielle, if you have to choose, will you rather use the Nikon 200-500 with the fixed aperture, or the Sigma 150-600c? I know you guys use the Sigma a lot. Will the Nikon lens have quicker auto focus?

I got a few tips here. Thank you. Also, if possible kindly a few things about clicking birds at dawn when birds come to branches and flies here and there in restless position; even if clicked at that moment our eyes are not satisfied with the clicked picture. If possible kindly tell something about it because during that time at dawn birds do not stay still in one position even for a few seconds. As we take the aim with the camera it either moves its position or flies away. Hope you will guide about it. Thank you.

A major problem occurring now for Canon mirrorless camera users is the inability to have reliable autofocus with third party lenses. I can't speak for all third party manufacturers, but Sigma has publicly stated that their lenses do not function well with any Canon mirrorless bodies even with the Canon adapter. Canon users who switched from dslr to mirrorless may be concerned it's a mechanical problem with the lense. It's a communication problem between the camera body and the lense. Canon has no plan to authorize any third party lenses for the mirrorless line of cameras.

@@PangolinWildlife Danielle, it was in the early days of switching to back button focus and I’d not used the camera for a couple of weeks. I was in Scotland photographing an otter but I began to get flustered as the otter came and went and I couldn’t focus the camera (other than manually). When I left the area away from the otter, I went through the various custom function settings on the 1DX2, replaced the battery, cleaned the camera & lens contacts and changed the lens. At this point, a friend asked if I was using back button focus! What a fool I’d been! Easily done 🙄

No offense, The first part seems to be rewarded as 'the photography Darwin award'. Surly challenge the instructor's patience... the second part, most common. Especially If u take a break from photography for a while. Do note crowded dark green leaves are not an easy background for the camera AF system to distinguish from. Even more in low light.
