I get the feeling that some people just don't understand how amazing this free training is! Everybody argues about which DAW to use... but how about which DAW has the best FREE training?! And, YES, Cockos PAYS KENNY TO DO THIS!!! So they provide the best IMO DAW for dirt cheap and the best training for absolutely NOTHING!!! That is AWESOME!!!
I’m looking into coming over to reaper full time for music production because of what you just said. What an amazing DAW and the hard working team behind it.
I second that! Love the information Kenny provides. Things I would not think about to make work flow easier...PLUS the information is very easy to understand.
@@Macho_Beats We have had like 30 updates this year. Worth it. And if you are into using orchestral libraries we have Reaticulate. so much better than cubase system they have.
@@maplefoxx6285 Thank you. It’s just so much to learn. I need to get more into the community. I need to be able to learn pretty fast so I can continue working.
Kenny, you set the bar for the quality and level of information each and every time you create a video. I'm a recent convert to Reaper coming over from another DAW and it is refreshing to find such awesome content that nails each subject you present. You are a real asset to the platform.
Me, before I watch a new Kenny video: “Looks good but I don’t think I need this” Me, after I watch a new Kenny video: “This is great and I’m going to use it on every project from now on!”
Anything I have a question about has its own video by Kenny! Reaper has been an absolute joy ever since I switched because of his clean concise instructions. I am so grateful for such a resource.
Easily one of my favorite videos of yours. This just opened up a lot of creative options for me, and made it clearer how easy it is to do filter effects without third-party plugins. I've also wondered about automating that quiet/loud 90s type of guitar effect using only one guitar track. Seeing that plugins have Enable envelopes will make it easy to, say, toggle the distortion FX on a track as needed. Just brilliant. And fun! Thanks again.
I use this a lot, for vocals, automating the melody or any instrument of the song, to put the vocals more in the mix, Reaper has other manner's too, like in the action list, where you can add points at a specific place and manually lowering that part. Amazing DAW isn't it, in PT you have to open another channel, mostly on the bottom of the tracks. Which is time-consuming. But I have to get an MIDI mixer, to do this even faster and efficient. So that will be the next buy. Even if I knew the feature, it's still learning full for beginners. btw, if you are creative, you van do this with reverb, delays etc. Even distortion that you want on a certain place. The sky is the limited. Thanks again Kenny.
I've been using the 'automation items> insert new automation items', then selecting its properties and using the 'cycles' and 'LFO shape' to create various waveforms in the envelope, which I can adjust globally with the other 'properties' sliders and settings, and then specifically, by dragging the envelope 'points'. I find this better for setting up similar but different envelopes on multiple tracks, but they're time aligned, so I can mute and unmute bars of multiple tracks and have say each of bars 1-4 play in sequence from each of 4 tracks in turn. If I want to change the track order of the bars, I just drag the envelope between the points up or down to mute or unmute over the selected bar. It helps to have the tracks adjacent, so you can see that the mute/unmute choices align correctly. There's a demo here with a single note line converted to a rhythm:-ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-CK-BPFIEYpU.html
@@Bluelagoonstudios Cheers! Hats off to the late Dave Smith for getting midi together. For the stuff I do currently, I like to stay in midi for as long as possible. There are so many manipulation options vs audio only.
@@MrLanka-ud8wl Cheers! For the 'automation item' if you're working in a set BPM, you need to select a time length which is a multiple of the BPM, even if it's longer than your track data, otherwise the 'cycles' fader won't line up the cycles with the beats. You can 'nudge' it all forward or back with the 'phase' slider, but it's tricky to get the cycles and beats to line up after you've created the 'item'. Easier to delete and recreate if not right, although I have 'unclipped' some midi notes using the phase slider to move the phase forward.
sooooooooooooooo good information and generally very grateful!!!! I switched from ableton, and six months later I deleted ableton and am fully working in reaper) although I tried to switch to reaper for several years!
You just made my month (a hard times one, too) when the Mickey Mouse hand appeared over the plugin. Thanks to Reaper being more intuitive for me, and to you for making this great, great video. I've been putting off incorporating automation for like 30 years. I started using Cakewalk in like 1988 and have never used automation. And I'm probably, finally throwing in the towel on Cakewalk's twists and turns (or learning Ableton for that matter). I really like the intuitive, quick-learn experience from Reaper. I get where other things try to be slicker, but it never equates to faster work flow for me just cramming stuff on top of and inside of other stuff. I like the separate track-looking deal. Conversely I think it's great to have midi and audio expressed on the same track (also Reaper).
Thank u so much for these awesome tutorials! I am a Logic user..but spend time in Reaper as well. And, to be frank, I am finding more reasons to spend even more time in Reaper. I needed a portable system to mix on when away from my home studio and was using a 2011 MacBook Pro . However, it was showing its age and the maxed out 16GB of RAM was not enough for Logic to run smoothly on. I even had issues running Reaper. So I wiped it and installed UbuntuStudio with the Xubuntu OS which is a super light desktop and runs smoothly on older systems. I installed Reaper, Reapacks, and the Tukan plugins. It runs smoothly and I have 2 systems to share projects between and on the go. Reaper is amazingly forgiving on systems with older CPUs and low RAM. THank you Kenny for your hard work and amazing videos.
its a most powerful flexible feature in Reaper I automate most everything now, save automation items, apply them to effects chains etc... but I never bothered to consider automating 'mute' Never noticed it until now :)
Love this Kenny!!! Been starting to work like this. I bought a behringer X touch one. This gives me a flying fader with a bunch of other controls. Parameter automation is awesome with this. Works perfectly with your last couple videos about this very situation. If yo need a drummer, hit me up. I suppose I could edit too.
Kenny, I'm certain I'm not alone, you are my favorite instructor. If you were my neighbor I would pester you constantly, just not about the stuff on youtube. I don't have to ask you to show me again, I just play the video over. It usually takes me a couple runs through.
Excellent presentation Kenny ... I have two questions for ideas of topics you want to cover ... I am composing music and I using complex measures meaning a chorus can be 11/8,7/8,3/4,13/8 and getting those by the mouse every time I try to write a new idea I end up without the idea for the time it takes me to adjust the key signature changes ... is there a really quick way to do this ? One second topic that you might be interested for a video is how to have the bottom mixer be able to view the folder parenting setup as Reaper has as default but the faders to be big enough so that I can adjust the volume without the need of a second screen ... Thank you for the valuable tools you share with us ... so far you helped me out a lot with many topics I faced with reaper .. keep on going and giving us the help we need ...
Thanks for this video Kenny! Just wondered though, how you do set the colours on the automation icons? Mine are all set to grey. Not the fader colours but the icons on the tracks in the mixer. Many thanks.
@@REAPERMania Thank you so much for the reply. I thought we can separate every mixer channel for track and work on it and close.Feels less complicated and comfortable when we see that one floating mixer channel. 😊
I'm sorry, I don't understand how to open up a one channel mixer. Do you have to undock the whole thing and then just move it so the one shows or is there a command for just bringing up the one that you want to automate? Love your tutorials btw. Thanks.
Kenny did this one a while back. Don't know if there is a more recent one. If you are looking for a specific topic just put something like EQ Kenny Gioa Reaper in the search box. If Kenny has done one, it should turn up. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-0LgflmNt_iw.html
@@AndyCampbellMusic I followed your link and it’s one I happened to have looked at six months ago and left similar questions in the comments box there…🤞
@@BeesWaxMinder I saw your question. I don't know if Reaper can do round robin multi velocity layers on a single key in its sample player. I don't think it's that sophisticated. You can get the Free SSD 5 drums down that has multi layered sampling in the free kit they give you. You can layer samples alongside that as one shots or actually layer SSD with the Reaper sampler and blend them. Kenny has done a video on using the free SSD5 version . A while back Steven Slate did one of their crazy deals and so I upgraded to the full program. I also use something called Jamstix 4, I had that one from version 3 before I had SSD5. Now I generally use Jamstix to play SSD5, sometimes layering playing both programs together. There's a free version of Jamstix 4 you can try too There are so many good free drumkits out there these days. I think Kenny did a tutorial on MTPower drumkit too, though not 100% certain on that one. You should be able to create whatever drum tone you want, with a bit of mixing and matching..
I have a problem with envelopes, when i select trim/read or trim, the automation doesnt appear, its empty, i have to select write, press play and stop fast for it to make an automation and then i can use it.
Perfect as always. Thanks. Can you show in the new videos how to reduce the recorded wav files in the directory. I often record 16 tracks for 2-3 hours and I would like to cut out unnecessary fragments so that they don't take up so much space. Is it possible in Reaper
Plugin automation: Is there a way to quickly change Automation Mode for ALL parameters in a plugin? Or am I better trying to record the movements with MIDI?
This might be of interest. I used 3 track controls and 1 envelope to modify some track plugins (modal randomness, chorderiser, velocity and timing humanizer, midi swing with snap-to-key on the track envelope). The box shows the plugin is bypassed when it's bracketed, so you can see visually which plugin is working, and when, in real time. The track controls each have LFO's controlling them (modulate>LFO>tempo sync). Once tempo sync is selected you can enter a value which is tempo related, so you can get predictable time 'drift', if required, vs time drift or strict beat-locked modulation. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zHjFzSIGpnw.html
Hello, Kenny, thanks for this informative video. Is there a way to automate any parameter in a Kontakt instrument in this way, or an easy way? I have several Kontakt instruments which have a lot of parameters that don't appear named in the Reaper envelopes window, they're just numbered #001 #002 etc. and there are hundreds of them, it's really hard to identify the one parameter I'm looking to automate. The "last touched parameter" feature also doesn't register any parameter when I change it in the Kontakt instrument interface. Do you have any advice in this situation? Thanks in advance.
Regarding what happens when you leave the fader while recording, is there any difference between latch and write? I understand they both go on writing the value the fader is left at, while with touch mode the envelope stays untouched after you leave the fader. Is that correct?
why automation in reaper is so tedious compare to ableton and other daw. so many clicks need to be done in order to make simple automation. Of course Reaper has something to show in terms of different functions and modes, but I always struggle to make some little things in my workflow to work right. Automation and midi piano rolls are one of those. I just end up with less detailed track and mix. I hope to find a way to make automation much faster, not a fan of using hands for drawing automation in live mode.
I love your content, Kenny, but I feel like this video was mislabeled. This was so much more about automation modes than it was about automating stuff. I was hoping more to get some tips on creating shortcuts/hotkeys for automation, or some tips on automating stuff faster/with more control, but this video had none of that, which is too bad because Reapers automation stuff sucks in comparison to Ableton/Bitwig. There are so many fiddly, confusing menus and I was hoping to learn how to make it more intuitive. Perhaps a video you could make in future?
