Automated Home Weather Station (Satellite Image Collector)

This started as a home weather station project, so far I've gotten as far as the satellite image downloading system. Adding local weather sensors will probably be a future video. So far, the system is set up to automatically receive NOAA and METEOR-M2 satellite transmissions and display the weather maps in a web panel. Along the way I had to rebuilt my satellite antenna, upgrade my Raspberry Pi computer, and get a bigger waterproof housing to fit all the equipment.
Some resources I used for this project include:
-QFH antenna guide: usradioguy.com/noaa-apt-recept...
-Instructables guide: www.instructables.com/Raspber...
-Code for automating the entire process: github.com/jekhokie/raspberry...
-Reddit and the helpful users on / amateursatellites and / rtlsdr
Some issues I ran into:
-Raspberry Pi's don't have a clock... so if you're doing this off-grid or somewhere without always-on internet you'll need an add-on clock module.
-My SDR doesn't seem to work with rtl_fm's -T option, so I had to manually enable and disable the Bias-tee as described here: www.rtl-sdr.com/rtl-sdr-blog-...

Quick tip you should never try to fight convection when air cooling electronics. The air in your box will tend to stratify cool on bottom hot on top. Also forced air cooling work well BUT it degrades over time due to dirt and junk in the air. In your application moisture could WILL become a problem. Pulling out side air into a box that has set in the cold over night can cause condensation. I worked in the thermal management part of the electronics industry for abt 5 years.

you should add heat sink on the RPi 4 , that may help with heat problems also it will stop the thermal throttling

I was gonna suggest similar, or at least another fan mounted sideways next to the Pi to blow air across it.

A few years ago I built a QFH antenna out of pvc water pipe and computer network coax. I connected it to my dedicated APT receiver which works in the 137 -138MHz range and ran the output via a PC soundcard into WXTOIMG software, I got some really impressive results. But after a year or so we had a bad storm which obliterated the antenna (I mean totally mangled it) and I need to get it all back up and running again. Cool video.

should make a shroud or pipe from fan to just below top of box, even just the length of a pringles can will improve thermals. you have room

The more I learn from your videos, the more I read books which go into the why's and how's of the terms you use. As I said, I know next to nothing about electronics/computer/radio, so I keep on with my reading and continue to watch and learn from your uploads. Thanks for your work in getting this out. Best wishes from the hills of Virginia! Cork

Impressive build my friend, i did something similar years ago with a wee yagi beam and got great images too but occasionally I would get a lot of distortion to the images on some passes which made me realise that this can be caused by a few things mostly for me seemed to be heavy cloud cover.

For all my remote radio systems with the rpi, I use power over ethernet (POE). There is an adapter that can both put POE onto the cat 5 and take it off at 5v. I use a POE enabled switch, so I only need the POE adapter at the rpi, it powers the pi, and the rsp. I then use WinSCP to move the images from the pi to my main computer. I copy the GOES birds this way.. Great video, especially the antenna, I will have to try that.... Thanks de wb7ond

A very beautiful helical antenna, I haven't watched all the videos on the topic yet, but the helical antenna has a directional characteristic, and in your arrangement, the signal maximum would be when the satellite is directly above the antenna. That would be a good antenna for automatic tracking. I wish I had such a cool neighbor like you. 👍

Watching this video again after finally getting around to getting the ball rolling on my own Raspberry Pi weather station that I have been planning forever. I'm starting the other direction though since I'm starting with environmental systems first, and I think I'm going to probably go with GOES data when I get around to adding a satellite receiver to it. I would like to play around with using a small antenna to detect lightning first though.

5:55 Using Ethernet in my Orange Pi, I noticed a lot of noise on the receiver. I had to connect to the network via Wi-Fi, as interference clogged the signal and degraded the quality of the received signal. the interference on the receiver's waterfall looked like a picket fence made of sticks

I don't think plugging the sdr directly in will effect the signal much. Usb is a digital signal unlike the antenna and coax which is analog

It does corrode over time, but it doesn't seem to affect the performance so far. I think the main benefit of copper is it's easy to shape and work with.

My weather system cost me $0 and very easy to install ! Get 1 18” willow branch , mount it on a board and if the stick is wet it’s raining if the stick has a shadow it’s sunny and if it’s white it’s snowing and if the stick points up it humid and if it points down it’s dry ! Lol

6:13 i wanna ask something. I never did any hardware-y project in my life but hot air rises up so shouldn’t the fan be placed above actually? Or does it have any effect anyway because what processing does the rpi even do that would be considered heavy/heating for it?
@saveitforparts
@saveitforparts 6 месяцев назад
I'm just using the fan to circulate some air, I wanted it in the bottom to help keep water out.
@hoteny

@@saveitforparts yeah that makes sense, my bad! I really like this project and wanna do it as well even, except that SDR dongle is actually pretty expensive, and from all the other stuff you used (filterers or what was it, gain boosters?) it seems like I should be careful what I am stepping into. Keep it up, I really enjoy your satellite videos a lot. The amount of trial-error you go through makes it worthy.

i don`t think it`s possible anymore. I tried the alternative link to collect data from there for the satelite passes and kepler updates ,but doesnt work. Replacing the weather.txt file with up to date data also did not do anything. When i try to update the GUI it stucks on 2 % and that`s it. If there is command line workaround let us know. Or u want to just upgrade to the Pro version ? In that cases - there are keys online ...
