Making use of the ru-vid.comUgkxcJ22tnHH9l1vjdIdEIG27iOG55P7LXI8 reconditioning plan, I just saved 2 auto batteries from being completely junked. The guides were very simple to follow. I wish I would have found this years ago! You may use the guide to recondition any battery type

I have three of these. Mounting them to the machine and plugged inline with the block heaters for a constant trickle charge has proven to be a great tool for cold starts and long battery life. Although expensive they do what that advertise. Much better than the Napa brand junk I have purchased in the past.

Long story short, most trickle chargers just apply one constant current that turns on/off depending what the battery voltage is. The CTEK will automatically adjust current flow depending on battery state and can do things like load test to better understand the state of the cells and adjust charge rate.
@Netolu
@Netolu 10 лет назад
I noticed they also didn't cover (glanced over it briefly) the reconditioning capability of the CTEK chargers. They pulse charge with high voltage to loosen sulfates that are layered on the battery plates. It's one of the things that makes the CTEK unique, and I'm really surprised they didn't discuss that.

Most simple chargers supply a constant voltage and variable current. The current varies with the internal resistance of the battery. A light bulb in series will limit current. For example, a bulb that draws 500 milliamps will limit current through the battery to that level. Even if using a large charger.
@danwat1234

I have used this brand of chargers for about 4 years and they are brilliant. They keep the batteries on both my classic cars in tip top condition. Before purchasing this brand I would have to replace at least one battery each year. I used to use trickle chargers over the winter period and in the Spring when taking the car out of storage the battery would be dead or as good as. I now keep these CTEK units on all the time when the cars are in the garage. Not had a duff battery for 4 years now.

I've used a half-dozen "Battery Tender" chargers for the couple of dozen motorcycles I've owned. Problem is they never turn off--leave a battery connected to even the tiniest Battery Tender and, when winter's over, the electrolyte has boiled off and the battery is ruined. Leno rec'd CTEK for years, unpaid, because their product turns itself off until it's needed. For Leno that means, if true, every vehicle in his fleet is always ready to go. But I don't know, myself, because the CTEK chargers are hard to find and expensive.

BatteryMinder does all this plus alot more. It compensates for ambient temperatures and adjusts also tests the battery after charging it. Desulfates, test for reverse polarity, can do 6 different types of batteries , has an eco mode to detect no charge bei g used.Has 3 amperage modes, 4 level indicators and can also charge 6 batteries at once in parallel to keep them topped off. I used the old model for 15 years and it saved so many batteries in that time. The new one does everything automatically and has a memory recall too. If you lose power durring charging it picks back up where it left off without the need to push buttons. Model # 128CEC1 12 volt. They also do 6v 24v 36v 48v. Any thing that moves or uses batteries. Even airplanes.

So many battery charger manufacturers "claim" desulphating modes on their chargers. I challenge them to take a heavily sulphated battery and then do a real load test and capacity test and compare them to new battery specifications. And a conductance tester does not tell all accurately which is why I never use on in the battery lab. Tests and not conjecture are the proof.

Been using a CTEK for years now. Best on the market. Have brought dead batteries back to life. The desulphation pulsing to reverse damage works amazingly. It will keep pulsing the battery till it comes out of its dead state and starts to accept a charge. Worth every penny. Mine came with a bolt on terminal set and a clamp set. Quick and easy swapping with the setup. Best way to charge all sorts of batteries correctly including AGM batteries which normal chargers can damage.

I have two CTEK chargers and using a data acquisition logger, logged and plotted the charge algorithm. Really, these chargers are nothing special. The charger charged to 14.32V, turned off and then back on when battery voltage decreased to 12.87V. And it went through this cycle every two hours. There is no float or maintenance mode. Jay, nothing beats actual testing because manufacturers will always promise you the world.

1.Hook the charger to the battery,THEN plug the charger into the wall (AC) socket ! 2.When chargeing is complete UNPLUG the charger from the wall (AC) socket FIRST, then unhook the charger from the battery ! ////////// I use a trickle charger on my bike during winter,I plug it in before start up (appx.1 hr.shumacher auto XM1-5) then start and heat up ,after shut off,I plug the charger in agin and recharge,(because a warmup doesnt run long enough to completely charge) appx. 1 hr. then remove the charger completely ! BINGO, this is EXACTLY what I do with my 6 cars and 3 motorcycles. With COVID I don't drive much lately except I run each motorcycle for 10 minutes at idle, and each car for 10 minutes while I drive it around the 3 mile block. I have a 2013 Buick Verano Turbo with 13k miles on it that's a garage queen, car looks like new inside and out and the original battery starts the car up easily even before I charge it. I have typically had Delco batteries last 7 years or longer, and have had several Advance Auto Parts AGM batteries that don't seem to last any longer. Only difference is I charge all car batteries up to 100% with my Schumacher Car/Marine charger and the M/C batteries with a Battery Tender Plus 12V Battery Charger and Maintainer. And don't forget to exercise the clutch on the M/Cs or the plates will rust together after 3 weeks idle like they did on my Suzuki Volusia. I use Mobil1 in ALL vehicles.

Lionel here in central California. Nice informative video. I have a C6 Corvette and several Harley motorcycles. I'm retired and work part time at a Harley shop. What I first noticed is that you mention " trickle charger ”, and not a word about "maintenance charger". Harley has had them for a very long time and Battery Tender also has a nice one. As I sure you now know, a trickle charger never turns off and a maintenance charger turns on and then off when the battery is charged and turns on when the battery drops to a certain level. Just saying...

Yes lithium batteries like to stay at 20-80% SOC for maximum life. Lead acid really likes to be fully charged. A car's alternator doesn't really do this especially as newer cars have alternators save fuel, so you should charge up your car's battery every few months with a basic charger to less sulphation.
@achristian7015

1:25 the CTEK cannot analyze a battery. The only way to do that is with a load test and capacity test, assuming of course the battery accepts a full charge.

And the trouble with most," smart" chargers is if the battery is down too far the charger will not turn on as it thinks it's being shorted. You have to introduce a separate 12 V source to foll it the turn on. This probably is the case with this one too.

One thing to be aware most (but not all) smart chargers need manually reset if the power goes down. Maintanance chargers that cycle on and off automatically are safer and better for the battery than float chargers. Most smart chargers won't even attempt to charge a completely flat battery. In Euro the discount stores Lidl and Aldi often have discounted specials on good smart chargers.
@lgoamity
@lgoamity 2 года назад
Glad you bring that up. Have both types of smart charger/Maintainer myself. Yet, having bought a "set it, forget it" (automatically attempts to charge, if properly connected/ detects at least 2v when powered up) Diehard charger first... I was a bit surprised when I found my second one (Stanley Fat Max with several settings options) didn't have this feature. It fails "off" after restored power. Suppose both have their place...

Vaibhav Kumar Except that a lead-acid battery does not need that. A Li-Po battery needs computer monitoring when charging, they actually have the sensors built into the battery, else you risk the battery exploding. With lead-acid it takes quite a bit, for example charging for a couple of hours and boiling all the water out or overheating and causing one of the plates to fuse to another. With the price of one of their chargers you can just buy a Optima battery and have less faults.

LEGIT. As someone who works in the the field of electronics, (lawl) I can vouch for that metaphor of the bath tub. Leaving a battery connected to anything in any form honestly, will drain the battery regardless of the electrical flow.

$178 on Amazon. There are more pages of 1-star reviews than I had time to count. Over 5 pages of 1-star reviews. Customers said that their battery exploded, it was no more than a trickle charger, that the so called claims of desulphuration of dead batteries coming back to life were bogus, that it ceased to work in 4 months, and so on. One guy cursed out Jay Leno for recommending it. I was all set to get it but not after reading the reviews. No sir! By the way, the company may be Swedish, but the manufacturing is in.... you guessed it, CHINA!!!! Chinese-made junk. Again. My little cheapo battery charger does a great job.

The best and newest and probably expensive than too. But as with anything you get what ya pay for. I always monitor batterys as they are charging, Thanks Jay!

Funny how overtime I've connected my CTEK to a battery it sparked. Even sparked when both clamps touched together. So not sure why they are saying that doesn't occur with their product.

Actually, what Jay said about electric car charging is correct - for Lithium batteries. Each battery type needs different handling. What's best for NiMH will ruin Pb-acid, etc

The CTEK worked great until it DIED. The unit died right after the warranty period ended. I would gladly discuss with CTEK what happened. I was simply using it as directed in my garage, no strange locations etc. It is concerning that something as expensive as this would last such a short time. I'll update this review if they are willing to discuss the situation and find a reasonable solution. Otherwise be careful if you choose to purchase one.

When he said the acid leaves the battery if you over charge it he is Wrong. The water is what can boil or evaporate if over charged. I usually leave a small charger on my antique car's battery in the coldest days of winter and I control it with a light timer so it's only on for maybe four times for an hour each day.

It could leave the battery through capillary action inside the terminal post. That is how the corrosion on the terminals appears.

I’ve had a few of these chargers and they are bloody good the trick to them is they have all the electronic goodies on board They won’t damage on-board computers and things like that and anti shorting yes that’s all true plus they’re very rugged but when they detect the battery is full they actually stop charging and then they monitor the battery and if the car happens to be left sitting long enough to get down to 95% of charge I believe it then gives it small pulses to maintain it unlike the old battery tender trickle charges they kept on delivering the .8 A day in day out and they just cooked the battery like a frog in a frying pan because once it was fully charged they just kept going...... That’s the main difference to my mind the fact it actually detects when it’s full stops if it drops to 95% goes into maintenance mode if that happens to be enough to top it up to 100% again it stops again so the battery is maintained between 95 and 100% without cooking it..... Nor frying any on-board computers....!!!!

Jay I am an innovator I have an idea that you are the same as me very curious in how things work and have ideas in how you can do things better to save the end user money making their experience more satisfying in what they have bought, in your battery charger discussion I was interested in how none of the group discussed reverse current flow and the damages that can result from that situation, it would be interesting to discuss this battery charger phenomena and the resulting damages from this?

This is the first video on this channel that I've found truly annoying. They keep talking about "new technology" yet they describe a process that's been used in microcontroller based chargers for many years. A charger that controls voltage and current based on battery load and current draw? That was "new" about 30 years ago. Maybe this is new marketing "technology" based on the BS principle. I'm an EE so I might be taking this a bit personally.

Was thinking the same thing. The cheap Schumacher I have does everything they claim of theirs. Even has automatic voltage selection and de-sulphation.

Well said cosborne. These chargers are good chargers but no one with knowledge of charging would call these revolutionary. When the presenters went into sales mode rather then answering Jay's questions it made my eyes glass over. If one doesn't understand batteries these chargers will be fine but I won't ever buy one. Sorry Jay.

De-Sulphation is a scam. Once a battery is sulphated you can’t save it.
