wow, where did this come from? lol .. i remember working on some of these shots (the environments) The whole base scene was with Framestore, though i don't recall seeing this bat attack.
@@Rainbowhawk1993 yup, only for a few months. I worked on various environment tasks. You can see some of my work in the 0.13 shot .. well, in the final edit, not the above temp edit. Its interesting to see those WIP shots, i haven't seen them like that since i was working on it.
Mate if it’s true you worked on this film then I salute you sir. I used to watch this film everyone day going back and fourth from school when I was younger on my DVD player, it had to be one of the best films I have ever seen in a long time and that still goes today. If we really are getting a second Avatar I truly hope it’s as good as this one, bless you sir.
"I've seen a lot of guys leave this place in a wheelchair. Never seen anyone show up in one." That line is so great. If anything, that should've been left in.
Good that they cut this out, the arrows on the tires where a much more classy and subtle way to introduce Pandora’s hostile environment, while hinting at some form of insurgence/ resistance of the native species against the invaders. Together with the fact those tires get in his way and make him stop, foreshadowing that this resistance was going to be one of the main plot points and obstacles in his journey. Great way to start setting up the tone and leading towards the inciting incident in a not so in your face manner, like a monster trying to kill the character as soon as he arrives for instance. One simple image can tell a huge story! Visual Storytelling.
Agreed but I wish they could've also included the Planet in the sky, at least it gives a perspective on how big and strange Pandora is like having a giant ass planet above as a normal landscape. That shot sets you in a mood that this planet while a bit familiar is still alien.
I was gonna say, Jake looking up at Polyphemus while Stephen Lang's character introduces himself with the "You are not in Kansas anymore" speech is a wonderful directive choice that should have been left in. It really solidifies that we've left all sense of comfort and safety behind on this new world.
@@Timtimzi I actually wrote that and didn't realize it was a pun till I was done. The point I wanted to make was it was best for us to fall in love with the beauty and awesomeness of Pandora so we cared about defending more.
it’s so unsettling to watch jake and lyle interact for the very first time. who knew that within years to come, lyle would be the alleged murderer of jake’s eldest son.

I get that Cameron is trying to establish a dangerous environment, but someone saying it to a paraplegic is really insensitive. Like if you don’t get why he’s there just glare at him. I’m glad it wasn’t in the final cut. I thought the large arrows in the truck passing by was enough teaser of things to come
@@YankeesFan0620 They're in a warzone though. They're supposed to be soldiers. Soldiers that have seen combat and are still in the middle of it are probably not going to be sensitive souls or care if they have hurt a stranger's feelings.
@@danuk500 Jake is a former marine and is only in a wheelchair due to being wounded in action. You'd think they'd respect that. Also they aren't in a warzone, just a corporate security force.
I always thought the marines disgust in seeing a fellow marine wheelchair bound implausible. No marine would would think this way, knowing that that is the possible outcome for him and any of his comrades. Very dumb.
Well the human characters in general were weird. Jake being picked on because he was in a wheelchair was clearly meant for the audience to be disgusted at humans and it's keeping in theme with just about every scene that doesn't involve the scientist always showing humans being dousches to each other but yeah it felt weird that military would rip on disabled vets like that. It also felt weird when arguably the friendliest character on the "bad" human side was the colonel xD I mean he actually was pretty ok to jake until he went rogue and clearly cared for his troops. The helicopter pilot chick was also a weird case, like she was apparently a sociable friendly pilot yet apparently didn't get along with the other military people seeing how quick she was to help the scientists and totally fight against her former comrades. At least for jake it was semi understandable, dude was disabled and treated like crap and found a society where he had legs, was mega athletic and rode dragon bird creatures, had a catgirl waifu and was the bestest native indian that ever natived and could connect to the planet integrated usb port, quite a lot of enticement there.
They were mercenaries, they didn't necessarily have to be ex-Marines. They could have been from any service branch or since they were working for a private company (in the future) they might not have been ex-military at all. A lot of guys at these private military contractor places b.s. their way in by lying about their qualifications and /or military experience. The whole stolen valor thing. That might have been the idea Cameron was going for, especially with that bald-headed guy who seemed like kind of a dick right from the beginning.
@@danhealy7675 & Guillaume Schreiber . Thank you for clarifying that. They seemed so official they did not come at all across like mercenaries - and I just assumed this large and profitable US based company was being assisted by the military but yeah in retrospect it makes perfect sense them being a mercenary corp.
Wolf Hound The awe of arriving on another planet, followed by the ominous arrows in the tires. It felt suspenseful but then the bird jump scare would’ve just ruined the moment.
Plus the scene makes Quaritch's briefing about the hostile fauna partially redundant. "every living thing that crawls, flies, or squats in the mud wants to kill you..." Yeah, we already just saw that...
Glad they cut this! Just using the giant arrows to hint at the perils of Pandora was a much better storytelling device than the bat attack (which seems extra stupid within a secure military complex).
Err, good thing they cut this one. Like, one bat like that coming outta nowhere, going on the guy in wheel chairs whilst there's bare-chested blokes with no scratch to see? Yea nah.
you know predators always attacks the weaker ones, that´s nature. If it had attacked the bare-chested blokes it would have had lesser chance of success to kill.
Agreed it doesn't make sense. If bats are a serious threat, everyone would have been briefed prominently, and the whole base would have been protected by some measures like net - think Jurassic Park, or some defensive active systems. The base is supposed to be a safe place for everyone, it's not like a remote, relatively new outpost to miss such basic protection.
@@DARTHMOBIUS You know you give humanity too much credit, this was probably leaked due to stupid people not handling shit carefully. My mom worked in a lab (hospital) and 2 of her students got infected with Epstein-Bar virus when they were not supervised. When asked why would they handle hazdarous material with no professionals around they said they thought they had the knowledge to do it after 2 weeks of training. My mother had 15 years of experience handling hazadrous (biohazard) samples and she ALWAYS request 2 more helpers to spot/help her.
I remember reading this scene in the script, but didn't know they actually filmed it. The bat attacking is kinda too much for the start of the movie, but the shot of the planet overhead is cool.
I was still in highschool back then we were poor and could not afford to watch at theaters. My computer science teacher took our whole class and made us watch this instead of having a lecture.
To all the people saying 'Its looks so bad!', thats what all the shots look like before they properly finish them. Rendering shots in high resolution takes a long time, easier to make a mock-up and work from there. Only rendering the shots that are chosen for the full movie. Look at the stuff going on in the background at 0:14, nothing is fully rendered
For those of you saying this scene was unneeded, I think the point of it was to show how humans are so quick to feel threatened and to destroy. I mean it was behind a fence. It could not reach them, yet he still felt the need to shoot it down. Even afterwards Jake looked sorry for it because it did not have to die. It was also a rude kill. He had no remorse afterwards which is something Neytiri taught Jake about later on in the film. I also think it shows how no one really respected Jake because he is in a wheel chair, which is why in a scene soon to come, he immediately lets loose as the Avatar because he can move his legs.
I think they cut it because it was STUPID. They needed the open airfield area for the rest of the movie scenes so that mesh tunnel made no sense since the bats could attack anyone outside that limited tunnel area.
I doubt that. I’m pretty sure the scene was there to show Jake off as being as cocky as the rest but the bat showing up and startling him humbles him; reminding him that despite those other guys being cocky bastards, they’ve got experience on the planet. The scene just shows Jake off as simply being new and clueless to the wonders and threats. I’m sure it was cut simply because it was too early to show off the wildlife when they could amaze audiences by making them wait for the exploration scene.
i agree. and its the supreme irony the fact that the simplest organism would have killed him only becouse he couldnt run or dodge for a second. the basic human skills such as bipedalism count as twice here
@Alex Davila ok you actually have a point. i still would love to see this in the movie but now im convinced was not a good choice for the narrative. i forgive them for not wanting existencialism right in the begining that could affect a good character arc
The real ending to Avatar: Earth Military: "OK. They've defeated us here. We'll evacuate and nuke them from orbit." Earth Manager: "Only way to be sure?" Earth Military: "Only way to be sure." .
@@ShadowHunter44117 Oh yeah. Regardless of the behavior of the corporation doing the mining - these beings killed a lot of humans - and there would have been a push for retaliation. Now - Cameron is making a bunch of these Avatar films and he'd probably come up with some kind of bull shit as to why they couldn't do it. My guess would be that it's some kind of a Living Planet - where the planet itself would use some kind of magic to win such a confrontation. Nothing like that was evidenced in the first movie or in any kind of reality but that's Hollywood for you ... as opposed to what would REALLY have been likely to happen. .
@@BobSmith-dk8nw I doubt. I think humans couldn't bomb from orbit because at that time they would destroy the ore below hometree too. Later they tried to bomb anyway.
@@LukiKruki In case you didn't get it - that was a reference to the movie _Aliens_ where once they got back on their ship - they could "nuke" the whole site from orbit to be sure they'd gotten all the Aliens. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-B9aM4rH692M.html Now - as to what they could or could not do in this movie - well - that would depend on who was writing the script. Given - Cameron's interest in making a whole bunch of these movies he'd likely have some bull shit in there about why they couldn't do it (which is why I doubt I'll make viewing these things a priority). The thing is - the humans had space ships - and space ships can drop things from space onto planets - and - this WAS the Smurf's home planet - but it wasn't ours. So - while we could do things to their home world - they could not retaliate against ours. Advantage humans. As to ruining the material below the home site - how do you know what would ruin it and what would not? That would be a good way for Cameron to bull shit that they couldn't do it though. The thing there is - there are lots of ways to do things and if the humans decided they wanted to kill all the Surfs - odds are (short of _Magic(!!!)_ ) - their superior technology would let them do it one way or the other. Of course - one other factor here - is that if they didn't defeat the Smurfs - they couldn't get at the ore anyway. .
Aside from the Stingbat, I do like everything else about this scene, the attack itself is pretty random, but the banter and setup looking up at polyphemous make for some fun background building.
Good that they removed it, it makes no sense that the creature tries to attack like this when it could just fly into the opening of the gate. Pandora creatures are supposed to be highly intelligent!
Well now I wonder, how in the hell were Humans ever able to build that humongous military base on Pandora in the first place? That would have required transportation of tons of cement, water, construction equipment, machinery, and workers, and a lot of Security in order to protect the Humans from all the wild threats of Pandora.
I mean by burning parts of the forest you can set up a perimeter with guards and fences that keep the wildlife at a distance. And I assume they have all the resources for construction on their ship, but it still takes a while to set up a command base.
They brought big 3D printers to Pandora, building what they needed from local materials. The only imports from Earth were specialized things they couldn't make on-site, like computer chips, medicine, Avatars, and people.
Technically speaking, we can make superior concrete using only the items found on the moon. Hell, even ancient peoples figured that out before being forgotten and rediscovered 1500 years later. Just sand, crushed limestone, and water, all very common elements on a planet that supports life.
They weren't really hostile with the natives at first. The natives don't even care about them mining the place. They only cared because the humans kept encroaching into their territory and the safety of the tree.
Many times I don't agree with cuts made to movies since they add background that helps the story (Mark Wahlberg's car crash in Boogie Nights for example). But Cameron did this right here. He was masterful in the slow reveal of Pandora's dangers. This would have cheapened the atmosphere of the film.
The thing was stuck on the opposite side of a fence it couldn't have made it through, Jake could have spent ages looking at the thing without it having a chance of getting to him.
The arrows on the truck was a much more subtle way of explaining Pandora. The bat was cliche and random, not to mention the mesh tunnel that only covered a small area. It’s too much to start the movie with.
Maybe the stinger bats would fit into one of the other parts of Pandora’s many environments. Probably a harsh climate like a desert biome. But from the looks of it Pandora only has Forrest biomes.
Travel between the solar system and the next closest star to mine and retrieve a wondermaterial: profitable Cure a single paralyzed man among dozens of billions of normal people: not profitable
It was possible, but insanely expensive, he only went on this journey, so he could be paid for his surgery... He replaced his twin brother because everything was already paid for his brother's mission...
@@KayoMichiels they have anti matter Space travel, but curing a paralysed marine is too expensive ? I don’t buy that. We are already achieving this in real Life (sort of), but nowhere near to travel to at least 1% of light speed. But ok, otherwise there would be no movie at all.
Cameron insists so thoroughly on reinventing the wheel every time he makes a movie that he demonized making any wheels in the central commandments of the navi religion.
I'm glad the didn't include the scene, because it would make the bat look really dumb to attack through the fence rather than around where there was no fence.
Glad they cut this, totally ruins the pacing and I much prefer the more subtle buildup of the threats of Pandora, where it's simply hinted at by those arrows, talked about in vague terms in the briefing, and then finally seen for real when they go in the field.
Yknow if by the end of the movie series if it's popular enough James Cameron should make a remaster of Avatar One as a limited series with all the deleted scenes added to keep all his crazy ideas and original storylines
If anything, this scene adds bit more of character to Lyle Waintflee, more reason to hate him! in the final cut he is like a guy you just see then dies. They should had kept that part.
The reason why I'm glad this scene is gone is that we get more time to get used to Jake being a badasss unphased by anything, only to then see him struggle when it matters. Seeing him threttenned so early on would ruin that effect
Whilst the attack was cut I think they should have done an animal flying over when he looked up or attacking something else to show that they are just visitors and don’t gave full control
Interesting, I'm familiar with Titanic's deleted scenes and 99% of the time they should have been left in IMO. This one makes perfect sense though, don't need to be introduced to killer monsters immediately, feels cheap.
A modern army with 2022 technology like the US would be able to do much better than the defense forces the company had. Just imagine some main battle tanks, artillery or .50 cal The company's soldiers were simply not equipped for the war they were fighting, even though the technology was far superior to that of the Na'vi.
This was a mining operation not a military one. A private venture that’s why they at first tried to appease the Navi so they could avoid the bad press. The soldiers here are just private security similar to the ones hired by Brazilian Logging companies to defend from natives of the Amazon. Even the explosives they use at the final battle are actually explosives meant for mining unobtanium.
This scene bothers me so much because ole devil dog with his spit shined boots has his drop leg pistol holster on backwards line he’s gonna cross draw from mid thigh 😂
I’ll never understand why small scenes like these get cut when they’re actually good. Always irks me. “Oh but the runtime”, cool, great, god forbid we add another maybe 3-5 minutes to the already hour and a half long runtime. Lol.
This scene doesn't make any sense - there are people walking around in the open all around the base, yet this stupid creature attacks someone behind a tiny fence.
I think it made sense to remove this from the movie. James Cameron was aiming for a beautiful, subtle sort of danger to introduce Pandora, not so savage until later.
The stingbats fly, so they have access to the open area. The security men are there to guard the door to the mask-free environment. The chainlink-fenced corridor helps them guard the door, but it isn't perfect. They've probably been shooting stingbats all day.
I see why they deleted the scene. It was very off, cause it's easy for a small creature to slip by, but it wouldn't directly seek out the main character.
Those marines are so cruel to Jake for making fun of his disability and I don't know , what they will do to him by pushing their fingers on his paralyzed legs by making fun of it ?, thank god they deleted it
