Hello, everybody! Ooohhh boy, THIS episode. Holy shit. It makes sense why this is said to be one of the best in the series
This episode gives some of the most important backstory, especially for Zuko. And absolutely plants some important seeds.

THAT WHOLE LINE “The Avatar gives Zuko hope” CHILLS man, chills EVERYWHERE, like DAMN, it brilliantly ties in so beautifully and tragically to Zuko’s story and changes the whole meaning of hope that the Avatar brings and what exactly that means, and this new definition of hope from the Avatar ties in so brilliantly and beautifully into Zuko’s story and HIS destiny and purpose in this life. It’s utterly GENIUS. God the undertones, layers, spiritual complexity of destiny and fate vs free will and how it intertwines so brilliantly, as shown through the characters, is something that never ceases to amaze me in this show. I’m so glad you got the implications of that line Blue, as I too felt EXACTLY that sound effect once I processed that line and realized it’s implications because DAMN. I freaking love Zuko and Aang’s parallels SO freaking much, it might honestly be my most favorite character relation in the whole entire show, it’s just built SOO freaking well by highlighting one characters opposites to show each of their sinilarities??? GENIUS!! And the way this parallel grows and changes for the rest of the series is ASTONISHING .

Yup, it's because of episodes like this that Avatar is considered one of, if not the best, animated series, if not series, of all time. Even with the extreme uptick in story-driven western animation, you can count on your hands the number of shows that come even remotely close to matching it.

U know, while watching this episode I thought "What is the common theme between Zuko and Aang's backstories?" And I think that theme is... the cruelty of power and the guilt u put on urself. What I mean by that is that Aang lived fine and had fun as a regular kid untill the pressure of being the avatar (aka the most powerful person on the planet) was put onto him. And Zuko wanted to govern fairly, do the best for his people. But Fire Nation is all abt power and being ready to sacrifice anything for that power, including the people and including Zuko. Both Zuko and Aang didn't want this power and made logical (though stupid decisions) while being under its influence, and both ended up blaming themselves for it. So this really is the key episode of the show. Also, Fire Lord Ozai is the worst.

First if all, your editing skills are impressive, keep it up. Second of all, this story is so well-written. From the start, we assume the Gaang, Sokka, Katara and Aang, are going to be the main focus, and they are, but the true protagonists are Aang and Zuko. The two are foils to each other, they are the Yin and Yang that elevates the storytelling in this show to a whole new level.

You know something I just realized Like the scariest thing about avatar is not either the spirits are like the hundred year war but it’s the avatar cycle itself you’re probably wondering what do I mean by that will think about it like the avatar has a cycle where it’s basically reincarnated through different nations like it’s kind of fucked up to think that the avatar literally could’ve been reincarnated as like either Zuko or Azula or like on the bill inside it’s kind of scary to think about

Fire Lord Ozai is yet another example of poor parenting in media. Preston Northwest abused Pacifica for the sake of his reputation and wealth. Belos/Philip Wittabane abused Hunter for the sake of his own personal vendetta against witches Jack Fenton (in some ways) became so...RIDICULOUSLY obsessed with ghosts, he constantly put his children in danger. Oscar Proud (in a way) abuses Penny by always putting HIS chores on her shoulders AND giving her a ridiculous "no datin' until AFTER you're married" rule. It seems the only good fathers in animation out there are Mr. Doctor Possible, Splinter, Pet McGee and (to a small extent) Lynn Loud Sr.

coming back and rewatching this, it’s implied Zuko’s like, 14 at the time of the Agni Kai so he’s been exiled for 2 years at this point (i think i could be getting ages wrong) So in current time he’s the same age as Sokka and in the past he was the same age that Katara is now
