This was intentionally taken from Metallica. It's a tribute. It's jokingly been called "Sad But 2" on setlists and back when they had an AI you could ask questions on their site during the release of The Stage, if you said "This Means War" it would reply "You know it's sad but true."

Check out Save me. It’s off the album that followed up the self titled. It’s very gothic in atmosphere with Dream theatre type transitions. Mike Portnoy of Dream Theater plays on that album. Fantastic instrumentals in it. Not as catchy as it’s more of a journey but still has memorable hooks!

There’s a lot of bands that make different “transitions” into their style of music before they find that special formula for success you talked about. Even disturbed and godsmack has made transitions, along with skillet and shinedown. Love the reactions!

This is one of the fairest reviews I've heard from an old school fan that was dubious about how their sound changed after waking the fallen, this is awesome! I loved some of their STST stuff and waking the fallen was Amazing, but I had serious issues with Matt's voice. Great screams, but his tone, his support... Yeah. I've been delighted to see how much he's developed and changed over the years. (I also loved their old drummer & lead guitarist's side project, Pinkly Smooth-all Danny elfman inspired goblin metal with the Rev's vocals, so avenged got more experimental and melodic, I stuck with them lol) You've got a new subscriber here, I'm too curious about this new exploration of avenged for you!

This was off Hail to the King and the songs were a nod to their musical hero's. There are tributes to Metallica and Guns N' Roses to name a few... I'm the opposite to A7X I couldn't stand their first couple albums, I can't stand screamo... to each is own I guess. You are right about "Selling Out", I see it as growth. The band isn't as angry because they has seen success. To make the angry songs when you aren't angry is far worse than writing songs that could be popular. It's all about being true to yourself and feeling good about what you put out as your art.

@@THEDavidHeretic Yea it’s an amazing vocal performance. The only thing that I hate about that show is syns guitar is at like a 4 volume wise while everyone else is turned up to 12 lol. Just keep that in mind when the solo kind of misses the mark because you can barely hear it.

Great reaction. actually they have a lot of complex songs and songs with great transitions but you have to give them the chance and listen to them with an open mind in order to get their change in style.

It’s funny. The ones who say they sold out cause they’re not metal anymore must not actually know the band well. Their key influence is guns and roses. They sound a lot like gnr. Can’t get mad at a band for being talented and appealing to lots of people.

Their latest album (The stage) wasn't for general audience. But they're keep changed to what they wanted, although it's not everyone favourite kind of album. But for me the stage is progressive metal masterpiece album from them.

This song is about PTSD, obviously. Not necessarily troops going through it, but mental trauma can be a war for anyone. The razor's edge and the reaper's scythe are blades of death. The person in the song is contemplating suicide. As opposed to Sad But True, which is about the devil, This Means War is about the devil most people face daily. The lineup here: M. Shadows - vocals Synyster Gates - guitar Zacky Vengeance - guitar Johnny Christ - bass guitar Arin Ilejay - drums Nightmare will be a rough album for you. The Rev passed away in 2009 from an overdose. Alcohol doesn't mix with painkillers and a heart condition, unfortunately.

Avenged Sevenfold wasn’t the album that followed Waking the Fallen ..City of Evil came out in 2005 after Waking the Fallen ..you missed a whole transitioning period of the band

Im going to be really with y'all. I LOVE A7X! But this song isn't even in my top 20 songs by them. Its a solid song, but they have so many songs better than this. Just my opinion.

I find it odd that this is the first one that you ended up coming to react to. I feel like there are a multitude of much better tracks since "Avenged Sevenfold" that I would've chosen instead :D Still a decent track though, nothing special though!

@@chrismeadows4216 Yeah it is a little bizarre xD Mind you, The Stage gets a LOOOOAD of hell as an album overall too. I honestly like all of their albums, some better than others though. I thought the Stage got way too much hell; its totally different but still pretty good. Even if I am not a huge fan of some of the mixing and production.

@@Hedgehog1039 Honestly, I've only seen people say positive things about The Stage, sometimes at the expense of other albums. A lot of "It's their best record yet!" and "It's a MASTERPIECE!". Really hyperbolic loyalty. I usually rank it after Nightmare, Waking the Fallen, and City of Evil, myself. I definitely see the mixing, production, and vocals as weak points, but I do love and respect them the same. Some of my favorite tracks like Angels, Roman Sky, and Fermi Paradox are on there, of course. I do find Exist overrated. I don't think there's a reason for The Stage to necessarily be a disliked album, while Hail to the King and Sounding the Seventh Trumpet have pretty obvious reasons. That said, I think people can be really obnoxious one way or another about what they like or don't like. They're all great albums.

I think it's super cool that David recognized the song sounds like Sad But True and didn't judge it heavily. That's something a lot of people don't have the maturity to do. He's definitely the right guy to appreciate the band, because he seems open to what they've tried to accomplish.

@@chrismeadows4216 That is really interesting... I have heard more negative things than positive :D I guess it is just the people we have around us I guess. That being said, I find a lot of the people around me to be very stubborn when it comes to music so that is probably why. Going on from there I totally agree with what you have said. I love Angels and Roman Sky too. I'm just glad there is someone else who listens to the discography around here haha. Oddly, Warmness on the Soul was the first piano piece I (partially) learned before Für Elise being my second. Although the vocals are questionable the song really inspired me.
