o One of the biggest challenges cruising sailors face is how best to sail downwind with only your white up-wind sails set. The jib bangs against the mast and gets beat up and doesn’t provide much power. You turn on the engine and you then must put up with exhaust blowing across the boat. Neither are very attractive options. For years, UK Sailmakers has taught that cruising spinnakers were the solution to this sailing dilemma, but not everyone has come onboard with that philosophy.
o Setting a spinnaker with the aid of a dousing sock still requires someone to go forward to raise the dousing sock and some cruising sails feel leaving the cockpit is a real P-I-A! You can’t set it at the beginning of the sail and just have it “set” until you are ready for it.
o Now there is a much better alternative!
o UK Sailmakers has developed the Easyfurl Code D, a cruising spinnaker that can be pre-set and is easy to release and furl from the safety and comfort of the cockpit. The Easyfurl Code D is a cruising spinnaker with a nearly straight luff that furls from the bottom up, just like a genoa. With a regular, continuous line furler, it’s easier to use than a Stasher system and less expensive than top-down furlers. The Code D gets its name because its shape, a straight luff and round leech, makes it look like the letter “D.”

Great video. I like this boat. Very nice layout for its small size. It is within my budget and is big enough for my usage. Aventura do make a 44 and has been available for some time now. You still need a symmetrical downwind sail like a Parasail for your dead downwind run like crossing the Atlantic going west. Code 0 don't really work well at 180 degree unless you have a very fast boat like the Dragonfly 40 you mention in your video.

Obviously I watched your video because I saw something somewhere else about the Aventura 37 and couldn't believe the price point! I've sailed on a 38' catamaran for about 900 miles and coming from a monohull background, was impressed mostly by its performance! Eleven knots downwind will do that to a person. I own a Catalina sailboat here in Southeast Alaska and am recently retired, but I've been racing sailboats for 30 years and have done several passages of 900 miles or more as crew for friends. It's a unique experience sailing here, due to the cooler weather and unpredictable winds. Plus, the water is cold and you don't wanna go overboard. It can kill you. A friend of mine sails a monohull out of Norway, across the North sea and I recently saw a video of his where for the 2nd time in a row, his new top-down asym furler caused him issues. After watching the video, it looks like the leech and the luff can overlap sometimes if one of them gets backwinded, and can jam up the rotation of the furler. I think he was sailing solo and just didn't keep a bit of tension on the spinnaker sheet. Plus, he tried to fly it in about 18 knots of wind, but even at that, if it's not 'properly' furled, these top down furlers can cause problems. I have an asym in a sock and have never had an issue getting it back into the sock. My sock has a large throat on it (I've seen others that had a smaller throat and that seems to cause issues if there's a twist in the spinnaker inside the sock). The only time I've had an issue with it was while deploying it while single handing on a race, where once the sock was fully hoisted, the spinnaker wrapped around the forestay (I wasn't at an ideal angle to the wind because it was a bit rough and it was moving the boat around a bit. If I'd had someone on the helm instead of the autopilot, wouldn't have been an issue). Took me an hour to undo it! Either way, in heavy weather, if someone hasn't gotten their spinnaker down in time, an issue with a sock or a furler can ruin one's day. I've seen people rip their sails and have it fall in the water and wrap around their rudder, so a prudent skipper would get the spinnaker furled or stowed at the first sign of increasing winds. Good video. I enjoyed your Dave score. Nice way to judge $$ vs value. I would encourage you to practice reading your script (at the beginning of the video) before you record it. In broadcasting, we called it 'pre-reading', and it should be done out loud until it goes smoothly! Starting @ 1:30, there were a few words you stumbled over (it happens) until about 3:05 or so. Also, if you can purchase a wireless lapel microphone, it'll help with the audio quality. The room you're recording in is large and has an echo and if you're using the mic on your camera, it's picking up both your voice AND the bit of an echo. Also, the 'flying Star Wars banner at the start of the video goes by so quickly, I had to pause the video the read all of it. If you can slow that down a bit, it would look better. People who produce videos tend to feel the rate at which text comes on and goes off the screen is 'just right' because they know what the text says, but those of us who've never seen the text before are trying to read it, so give us a bit extra time! I've been a professional broadcaster since I was 15 y.o (am retired and 63 now) and am perhaps a bit particular about content but I think my suggestions would up your content quality a little! Otherwise, good info and insight into this catamaran and how it stacks up against others!

Hey Wade. Thanks so much for watching and for taking the time to comment and offer some much needed advice. I laughed when I read your note, because I just got back from BestBuy where I purchased a YETI X professional multi-pattern mic. ( read it on the box). The wireless mic’s I was using kept cutting out. But by bit we will make this better! Loved your points on the top down vs sock. Thanks again!!!
@waderogers
@waderogers Год назад
@@navalgazingatcampdavid Cool about the new mic! I guess this was the first of your videos I've watched and wouldn't you know it, I watch the one where your mic is broken! Figures! Yes, the spinnaker info comes from many moons of racing and sailing. I get to do some long distance coastal sailing with friends now and then, and have been racing/sailing in Southeast Alaska for 30 years. When the wife retires in a couple years, I wouldn't mind buying a 38' cat on the east coast and then doing the Bahamas for awhile, so I'm kinda window shopping right now. I too have a RU-vid channel you can check out. It's kind of unorganized but there are some good drone videos I've been doing that showcase Juneau, Alaska, and some sailing videos you might enjoy. I did a trip down the US west coast last year but haven't put together the video yet. I also did a trip across the gulf of Alaska, delivering a 42'powerboat from Juneau to Valdez, Alaska and have yet to put that video together. Here's one from a 4 day trip I did in 2020 to Tracy Arm, a 20 mile long fjord about 40 miles from here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Luus6pXphl8.html

As soon as it hits the shows I will get you that one. I just wish they would do a 50-52 sail. I really love their approach. I also wish that they would lend their interior designer to Catana. I love the 50OC layout but their interior treatment feels like a base RV. They could really use the Aventura touch! Looking forward to your wife's comments! Thanks again for watching!
