In this video John compares Avery Dennison paint mask vinyl with Oracle outdoor vinyl for use in Cerakoting stencils. John baked each sample in the oven at different temperatures to see how each vinyl compared.

Informative !!! I've been cutting vinyl for years, and cerakoting for less than one. I'm just starting to get into stencils for cerakote, at least I can make any that I want. I bought a roll of the Avery.

Ended up going with the Oracal 951 simply because of availability on Amazon. I would love to use Avery, but I could not find the SF100-235 other than at distributors. I'm not a shop, just an individual doing some Cerakote jobs for friends, so ordering a huge amount from other distributors made no sense to me. Not planning on baking it at 300F either, just needs to stand up for flashing between coats. Thanks for the info, the knowledge you share on your channel is invaluable (also your Amazon shopping list too!).

Glad to help. Best advice, once you are done, and final tack it, pull it out of the oven and peel the vinyl off. It will hopefully prevent adhesive transfer.

I have used green star interior vinyl with same results as Avery. You can actually peel at around 200 with no residue.

I'd be worried about baking it at 300. Thanks for the info.

We used oracle 651 for powder coat stencils, but if it gets much over 200° it does bake on, and to get it off clean you had to take it off warm. Definitely want to try that other vinyl for some cerakote.
@BransonCerakote
@BransonCerakote 2 года назад
It's actually used for car paint applications, but we've cycled it in at 180 degrees 10 times with zero issues (we've never put more than 10 layers of Cerakote on a project, but it would probably do fine.)

@@BransonCerakote awesome. I will have to order some. Going to cerakote some airsoft guns, and want to try some designs.

@@IceC429 Absolutely. The base coat is the only one that needs to be 1 mil. Every color after that is only heavy enough to cover what's underneath. Too heavy over stencils on the follow on colors will give you ridges.

You can see the glue residue on the first 2 for sure u can see the glair of the glue on Avery side and hear ur finger sticking to it , I have had Avery leave glue at 180, I have worked with both materials for 25+ years I own a sign company. But Avery definitely is best but still leaves glue here and there.

It's like gold right now with the adhesive shortage. Everyone is panic buying.

I was told, by one of the other sellers you mentioned, that you pull the stencils after the last quick cure and do the final cure at 300 with all the stencils removed. Your thoughts?
@BransonCerakote
@BransonCerakote 7 лет назад
As long as everything is metal, you can. Sometimes I have a lot going on and I just leave them on until it's done. As long as the surface is completely cool, they peel right off with no residue.

What oracle model is that. I'm reading the sf100-235 is good up to 200 degrees where oracle 951 is good up to 250.

I'd have to ask the office manager. We had a package of oracal outdoor vinyl for a project we did, and that was a few pieces of what was left over. I've never researched oracal because we've just always used the Avery Dennison, which it seems like most of the people selling Cerakote stencils use. (When you go out to NIC, they use AD) The reason I did the video was to R&D it. The store I saw that prompted me doing this didn't give a model number for the vinyl, it just said outdoor oracal. I didn't slant things one way or the other, I was just curious. It actually held up ok, but it roached when I went to 300. The AD does fine at that temp. I probably need to go back and do another test (and video) where I actually spray some coating over it, and bake it like normal, just to see how they do side by side. I'll try to get that done in the next couple of weeks.

Like all your videos. This is very informative and it just gave me the assurance that I got the right vinyl to use for my stencils. Keep up the great work letting us novices learn the ropes!

2 issues with Avery Denison. 1. Edges curling at 180* to tack out for a multi cam job. 2. Final bake the cerakote peels up along with the stencil. This is on a synthetic stock. Any idea why this is happening?
@BransonCerakote
@BransonCerakote 2 года назад
If it's all on the same stock, it's probably the stock. I don't have a scientific answer, but I do have a suspicion. What we've found is that if an item is actual plastic, not polymer (we test by squeezing. If it flexes, we don't accept the project). What I suspect it is is that there may be a high petroleum content in some of the plastic these stocks are made from, and it tends to leech out under heat, causing adhesion issues. Again, not scientific but we had it happen enough years ago that we just don't try those types of stocks anymore. Having said all that, if that's not the issue, (say it was on a steel slide instead) depending on the color, stencils will peel a bit sometimes. The glossier the color, the more likely they are to peel a little during tack. As far as the coating peeling when the stencils are removed, it's usually from the color underneath not quite being all the way tacked out.

Can’t EVER get this yellow stencil vinyl to stick to metal. Ever. It lifts and peels immediately. Especially on hand guards where holes are.
@BransonCerakote
@BransonCerakote Месяц назад
If the base coat is applied correctly, this usually isn't a problem. The brighter colors do sometimes cause the stencils to lift at the edges, but there are tricks to solve the issue. We use probably 40-50 feet of Avery a week, and rarely have issues.
