Something I have learned weeding my own stencils, especially on mags, take a hair dryer to heat up the stencils to allow them to stretch into tight corners without risk of ripping anything or moving stencils. Worked amazingly well on a bullpup 12ga I did recently and also an xd45 I did to look like a Nintendo zapper. Especially on slide serrations. Also helps with mags that are highly textured like tapco's.

But dont use a heat gun, it will curl the edges. Hair dryer works best for me

@@raw900rr Good tip, heat guns are 2 or 3 times higher temp than a hair dryer, they can easily damage things with too much heat, while a hair dryer will just warm something up.....

I would have liked to see you pull the male stickers after the first coat, also would have liked to see how you sprayed after the females stickers were installed. This video skipped the fine details in which I think most of us are looking for.

That was one of the first videos we did. It was back when we were doing more of a how to lay the stencils on vs doing the project. We are working on a big commercial project right now, but have a lot of these early videos on the redo list for this summer.

Any way to get ride of hard lines from stenciling?
@BransonCerakote

Depending on how bad they are, you may be able to knock them down with some 000 steel wool.

Isn't using bare hands going to leave oil residue that will affect the next application of the cerakote?
@BransonCerakote
@BransonCerakote 3 года назад
No. We only wear gloves once we begin handling coating. We've been doing it like that for almost 7 years, and have never had an adhesion issue (if the coating was going to fail, it would be during the baking process). Stenciling with gloves on is almost impossible (think spider web). Our guys look over the project before coating, and if they ever see anything that concerns them, they wipe it down with a paper towel and acetone. Cerakote isn't as fragile as the internet makes it out to be. Having said all that, if you follow the pamphlet and wear them, it's obviously not going to hurt your project.

Should we wear gloves while doing this?
@BransonCerakote
@BransonCerakote 4 года назад
That comes up from time to time. The safe, corporate Cerakote answer is probably. The practical, 7 years of experience with zero issues answer is the coating isn't as fragile as the internet leads you to believe.

Also, how about time and temp in oven between colors?
@BransonCerakote
@BransonCerakote 7 лет назад
Thank you for the question. It really depends on your oven. The video was more to show the correct use of the stencil pattern than to be an instructional video on the application of Cerakote. With our oven, which is 6x4x3, I tack free the parts at 180 for around 8 minutes. However, it depends on the part also. Some take longer than others. There's no set time. You are looking for the item to be tack free, but not hardened. Hope that helps. You can also contact us on our website for answers to any questions you may have. John

What is the point of the female stencils
@BransonCerakote
@BransonCerakote 3 года назад
There are rare times when you just don't have a choice because of the design of the stencil. Some can't be weeded as a male without destroying the image. We also use the laser to do color fill by creating a female stencil that we then spray with Cerakote and bake out. Having said all that, we use male stencils 99% of the time.

Do you full bake or flash bake after base coat?
@BransonCerakote

Tack out only. Cerakote won't stick to fully baked Cerakote.

Thought one of the most important things to do when working with gun finishes, was to keep your greasy hands off of the part! Where's the gloves Mr professional?
@BransonCerakote
@BransonCerakote 7 лет назад
When I first started, I thought the same thing. However, after doing this for almost four years, and after going out to NIC for factory certification, it's honestly not an issue as long as your hands are clean, which mine always are. Anyone who has ever tried to apply stencils with gloves on will tell you that it is a major headache. I've coated hundreds of items, (guns, tumblers, glasses, fire helmets, etc) (and hundreds of tags for Hunt-Tags.Com), and it's never been an issue. John
@totallldigital

@@BransonCerakote John, good to know about it not being an issue handling parts without gloves. I too am a certified applicator, but prior to my trip to NIC a few years ago, I practiced & learned how to Cerakote using their official applicator guides, which specifically instructs you to always wear gloves while handling parts after they've been cleaned. I've always gone through great lengths and pains to prevent touching parts because of that; even changing gloves multiple times in between certain tasks to avoid the slightest contamination. So thanks for confirming it causes no issues with coating performance, should make the whole process less tedious and more enjoyable. Keep up the good work, sir.

@@totallldigital makes being methodical about getting all the oils and impurities out before hand.. a moot point. Worked with computers years ago.. always wore gloves.. grimy fingers corroded the delicate connections of them after awhile.
