Thank you so much for this video! I am new to sculpting and ordered the brown Apoxy Sculpt first. Since everybody else tends to use the natural one, I ordered the smallest amount of this, too. I can confirm that the coloured one is way softer and tackier and gives you a longer working period than the natural one. The downside is as you say in the video, you need to be extra careful not to squeeze your newly sculpted parts because they will still be quite soft after a couple of hours and I managed to squeeze some parts 5 times in a row 😅 The brown one also is much more smelly than the natural one, especially while mixing the two components.
II just bought my first Appoxy sculpt to try it and Im hooked!, I quickly used up the one pound tester pots mostly fixing up my previous sculpey sculptures, sculpey is not fit for purpose for large figures IMHO, Appoxy sculpt sets rock hard and is great to work with. The problem is the smoothing agent Safety Solvent, it is a tiny bottle for £6!, there is bound to be something else I can use. I will now make ALL of my sculptures in Appoxy Sculpt as a base on top of the armature, than polymer clay on top of that. I cant wait to try the Appoxy Clay also
I hear ya on the smoothing solution! For what its worth, you don't NEED that to smooth. You can use water or rubbing alcohol to smooth things just as well :) They both work a little differently so you'll have to try them to see what I mean. It's hard to describe in words. But just know you don't need the actual solvent to smooth things out :)
It looks like the Apoxie clay would help build bulk from the armature wire up with little compromise compared to the Apoxie sculpt, which takes details beautifully!
Hi..=D...I was wondering what type of barrier cream do you use?..As I use epoxy a lot but have never had a reaction from it at all, and also I thought with it been non-toxic that I was safe to mix it without needing gloves etc.
I have two. "Invisible Glove": amzn.to/3hsSl95 and "SBS 44 Protective Cream" (can't find this one on Amazon, where I got it, again) I prefer the SBS to be honest. It's more lotion-y. The Invisible gloves tend to separate and get watery/goopy. They both work pretty much the same but it's never fool proof. It does wear off if you get your fingers wet when you smooth so it's not a great barrier against the epoxy on your skin after a little while. It is great, however, for getting the epoxy off of your nails and tops of your fingers. From when it works it's way up there but it doesn't wear off because you're not using that area if it makes sense. I figure it's better than nothing!
I'm putting together a plastic model kit. Some of the pieces that need to be glued together don't match up perfectly, and there are big seams. I want to mold something over the big seams. What would you recommend?
I'm ok with it but if I use it for awhile I do get a little itchy. Some people do have more serious reactions so I always use gloves when mixing and when I can sculpting.
I've never gotten a notification but if they have a newsletter, I'm sure they notify those who sign up. I haven't seen sales happen that often to be honest but I don't usually keep up.
Hello, I would like to ask you the following. I want to secure cured polymer clay into blank bezels of sterling silver. Which adhesive would you recommend it would work best? Can I use Apoxie Clay or would you suggest a different adhesive? Thanks a lot for your help.
Always use different sticks to remove parts a & b from containers....not your fingers which can transfer minute amounts from one jar to the other and cause premature hardening of the product. Always wear gloves. Use a mask, respirator and good ventilation. Everyone who has direct contact to ANY brand of epoxy will eventually become sensitized and have an allergic reaction. Only androids are exempt. This could be reddened skin, whole body itch, difficulty breathing. It's only a matter of time.
Yes, yes. Very good tips! I often do try not to use the same tool or my fingers but sometimes if it's already old and I don't care too much about what's left in the jar, I do get lazy lol! I wear a respirator when sanding especially and gloves for mixing. There is NO WAY I can sculpt with gloves so I do take my chances there (although I do use tools often more so than my fingers and I do apply a barrier cream since I figure it's better than nothing :)
On the packaging it actually says that you should wear gloves when mixing but it doesn't say explicitly that you should wear them when sculpting. Many plasticy things are toxic while they are mixed only. So maybe it's a good way in between. For example I have the brown colored Apoxy Sculpt and it is way too sticky to knead whithout gloves, but for sculpting this stickyness is not desirable since it will stick more to the gloves than to the model even when the gloves are damp 😅 Or am I doing something wrong?
@@christinas5854 This product, as do ALL epoxy products, continues to off-gas until completely cured. (Just because the company wasn't specific doesn't change the science.) Not only is touch eventually harmful, but breathing fumes and dust from sanding can cause serious reactions. If you must, damp, blue nitrile gloves are the best...it'd help if they fit tightly. When in doubt about the safety of products, before purchasing ask the manufacturer to provide you with an MSDS: Material Safety Data Sheet. As far as you doing something wrong, the temptation to avoid gloves because they stick to the clay is clearly an issue. Make no mistake, EVERYONE is allergic to these chemicals. It begins with itching and goes downhill. I was tempted and avoided gloves until I became sensitized after which I can't get within 50 feet of the stuff before my eyes swell shut and I wind up in the ER. There's no going back. You never can use epoxy again, and of course those who love epoxies just haven't had enough exposure YET to be aware of the danger. Sorry for sounding preachy, but speaking as a teaching sculptor who has explored all mediums since I became sensitized to epoxy, I'd suggest you invest your learning time using a non-toxic, natural product. @@leslieedwardshumez685 Oh thanks for explaining this, I didn't know this stuff was as toxic. And I am sorry that you suffer from these extreme reactions. I do almost always wear a mask when working with artificial clays, pastels, spray varnish or primers and the like and of course also and especially when sanding. And I always let it dry in another room be it the epoxy or primer or varnish. I used the blue nitril gloves you mention and they were the ones the epoxy did stick to 🙈 I bought a different brand white nitril gloves which are a bit tighter and I hope that I'll manage to sculpt with these instead.
