Prof. Avi Shlaim is one of the most honest historian that I know. Thank you Mr. Shlaim for your great services toward piece and humanity. I was born in Lebanon. As most of Lebanese, I have witnessed and suffered many awful atrocities caused by Israeli occupation and actions in Lebanon. Too sad to see that the media is blindly supporting Israel and its occupation policies. I want to thank Mr. Thapar for your interview with Prof. Avi Shlaim and grateful for the opportunity to listen and to understand the behaviors of the Israeli government. These types of interviews and conversations help audiences/viewers to validate the ongoing conflict into perspective with the events of history since WWII. It will be helpful if you can invite both PM Netanyahu with Prof. Avi Shlaim together to make sure Natanyahu learns true history and realizes his criminal actions against humanity. As UN Secretary General said " The Hamas attack did not happen in a vacuum". 16 years of siege was the main reason about which no one in the world doing anything about it. Hamas attack was a breakout from the open-air concentration camp.

Trevor Noah did a thoughtful interview on this, in sharing that Israel is the big brother (just from the standpoint of them being much stronger), and just because your younger brother hits you, it does not mean the bigger brother hits them back with their full might. @@chander3338 there were a lot of reasons why Oslo agreement failed. The Israeli View: From the perspective of many Israelis, the dynamics of Israeli-Palestinian relations since the signing of the Oslo agreement confirmed their worst fears: that the Oslo process would give a militant enemy the tools and launching areas for bloodthirsty terrorist attacks against Israelis. Very early on during the establishment of the security services of the Palestinian Authority, it was noted by Israeli observers that the number of Palestinians in arms and the types of armaments being brought into Palestinian Authority territory were significantly exceeding the limits established by the agreements. This led to the suspicion that Arafat was constructing an offensive army rather than a police force. But the greatest Israeli anger was elicited by the fact that the Palestinian Authority was doing very little to prevent terrorist attacks emanating from its territory. It refused to take steps towards disarming terrorist militias, permitted terrorist organizations to operate open offices in its territory, and either refused to arrest terrorists or would adopt a policy of “revolving door” arrests-placing terrorists in prison for a handful of days and then releasing them. As terrorist attacks against Israelis exacted a heavy toll in civilians killed and wounded, the entire conception that had been presented to Israelis - of the Oslo process creating efficient Palestinian security teams that would be better than Israeli soldiers in combating terrorism - collapsed. Palestinian explanations that they “couldn’t be expected to be collaborators and fight against their own people” rang hollow to Israeli ears in the face of civilian deaths. Many incidents caused the Israeli public to wonder whether Arafat and the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) had ever truly intended to lay down arms and seek negotiated peace agreements rather than armed struggle: immense arms supplies to the Palestinian Authority were made public; captured documents indicated Palestinian Authority support for terrorist infrastructures; and Palestinian policemen took up arms against Israeli soldiers. For Israelis, this was the ultimate breach of agreement, rendering it moot. The Economic View The economic reconstruction of the Palestinian territories was to be handled by internationally respected Palestinian economists and businesspeople working along with the World Bank and enjoying the financial support of Western donations. Toward this end, as early as November and December 1993, potential donor nations were gathered to commit large sums of money and an organization that was supposed to oversee the new Palestinian Authority economy-the Palestinian Economic Council for Development and Reconstruction (PECDAR)-was formed. These plans were halted by Yasser Arafat. Arafat regarded an independent and authoritative organization such as PECDAR as a potential threat to his power. The entire World Bank vision for a modern, Western-style Palestinian economy, built around competitive markets, transparent and accountable public bodies, and solid financial and legal institutions, went against the grain of the methods Arafat had used to run the PLO for decades. Those methods, instead of the World Bank and PECDAR paradigm, were imposed in the Palestinian Authority. The economy in the Palestinian Authority was since its inception run as if it were a syndicate, with monopolistic control over sectors granted to individuals or institutions in return for “percentage kick-backs” paid to authority figures in a pyramid going all the way to Arafat’s office. These public figures operated under no requirement to make use of the funds at their disposal, whether public money or “kick back payments” in an accountable or transparent manner -a state of affairs generally called “corruption.” Donor money, instead of being invested in infrastructures that could support future job growth, was used to cover salaries for teachers and police officers, which translated into a potentially never-ending dependency on donations-because cuts in donations could threaten the collapse of the entire system. As the Palestinian Authority lacked any clear legal protections for economic activities, private investors refused to come near it. The more terrorism mounted, the firmer Israel became in sealing its borders to Palestinian job seekers. The Palestinian economy went into a downward spiral. By the time the second Intifada led to permanent Israeli closures, choking off all trade, it went into a coma. Observers in Washington have concluded that the Palestinian Authority was a “failed state”

I respectfully disagree. Just wondering if you have seen the short documentary "The mystery of Israel solved" it's on RU-vid. There are several documentaries on this subject. Hoping more Christians will understand why he asked us to pray for Israel and the Jewish people. There are many that claim to be Jewish but they are not and the one not are creating the right left paradigm. This is one of the great deceptions. Just like here in the United States there is no right or left or Democrat's and Republicans they are nothing more than puppets for the Satan worshipping billionaires and trillionaires that are behind all wars, the one world government agenda, the UN and the CDC. If you want to know the reason the West supports Israel, you must look far beyond these shallow land squabbles & sectarian conflicts that have dominated MENA for millennia. The bottom line is that the West & its allies (including around 3 billion cultural/ religious Christians) control the balance of wealth & power in the world. Israel is appointed custodian of the holy land. In exchange for aid, trade & protection, Israel is tasked to maintain secular democracy, keep the sacred sites safe for tourists, & serve as defense ally providing intelligence & nucl deterrence to conflict among MENA factions. It’s the ONLY democracy is MENA and it’s vital for the interests of the West.

Israel's only fault is that she traded land for peace. During truce, troubleshooter built up,consolidated to wage another war. The conflict began between arab and Israel in 1940's to begin with. Arabs got vast land of jordan and Israel got the smaller piece of land and they said deal done for peace. I don't agree with the prof. Golan heights is the peak to monitor any troubleshooting from neighbourhood. Prof should have known when many arabs ganged up in six days war to destroy Israel completely. Palestinians never chose somebody who is for peace. They chose hate against jews always. Be it plo,hamas or fatah. And, therefore, one sees the self perpetuating chaos.

If you had, you would know that his assertions are meticulously based on research, from which he abundantly quotes. The only reason you reject what he says is because it contradicts your beliefs, which are political propaganda. Zionists themselves were surprisingly clear about the fact that there was a substantial Palestinian Arab presence in Palestine, who would not be convinced to relinquish their lands and would have to be forced to do it. Don't blame anybody because you are choosing to keep the blindfold over your eyes.

I always felt the conflict was just too complex for me to even have an opinion. I can see it was a bypass and I was avoiding looking at painful things. Thank you so much for the education. Beautiful historical lecture. In fact, it is the most truth telling description I ever heard sinc the beginning of this conflict. Not that I didnt know it but it is amazing how intellectual figure such as this beautiful professor with his poetic lovely voice laying it down. People and leaders around the world must submit to this wisdom if they want to save our planet from a disaster. From what I've observed other Arab countries have never shown any love for Gazans or Palestinians. If they did the ongoing conflicts between Israel and the West Bank/Gaza would not exist. Kuwait threw out 360,000 Palestinians after the 1972 between Iraq and Kuwait ended. Yasser Arafat sided with Sadaam Hussein rather than Kuwait. The only Palestinians who were allowed to remain in Kuwait were those 60,000 married to Kuwaitis. At that time Kuwait and the Gulf States joined together and said they didn't want Palestinians to live in the Gulf States because the local populations were small. They wanted their wealth from oil to stay with native Kuwaitis and they feared Palestinians would start to demand too many rights and benefits. This is why Saudi and the Gulf States didn't take any Syrians in during the Arab Spring; Instead Turkey and Lebanon took a huge number in as well as Europe and Canada. Canada's federal government targeted single mothers and families with lower education and work skills to come to Canada. And now it will take at least a couple of generations to have them improve themselves enough to be on par education and job skill-wise with the average Canadian. For reasons I don't understand it has always been difficult for most even well educated/skilled Palestinians to get a passport and have the money to move to a western country as an economic migrant. Maybe they prefer to live in the West Bank or Gaza, or maybe other Arab countries don't want even the better-educated ones? I hate war and I hate seeing civilians die in them.

There are so many facts omitted here in the first 15 mins that I've watched I'm appalled. If you want a real understanding of this conflict, you need to go elsewhere for a balanced perspective and also need to look into the Sharia, the legal code of Islam Edit: this video is misleading and I can only wonder what agenda this professor has to omitt such important details.

Thanks, Mr Thapar! What an interview! I doff my hat to Prof Avi Shlaim and you for my education and I am sure many fair-minded Indians would feel. no differently! I always believed high-handedness of Israel in dealing with Palestinians while I also looked forward to India and Israel relations. I wasn't that grown to understand the 1967 Arab-Israel war but have a fair recollection of the Yom Kippur War of 1973 when Egypt surprised Israel though later on Israel turned the table and how that war led to skyrocketing Crude prices. However, Prof Shlaim opened my eyes and that could happen because you brought him before us a former Israeli Soldier and now an Intellectual who could call Spade a Spade, some might see him calling Spade a Shovel. Thanks again!

Very informative interview with Prof. Shlaim. Before the current conflict, I had a version of how the conflict came to be as I learnt in history lessons. However, after the 7 Oct attack, I saw every so often the claim by some Isrealis that Isreal pled for the Arabs indigenous to stay to build Isreal but they refused. Instead, they received orders from other Arab states so that they could join the armies to revive Palestine. Also, it was said that Isreal tried to offer the land back following the six-day-war but the Arabs just wouldn't leave Isreal in peace. It left me kinda confused thinking I must have missed something until I countered Prof. Shlaim's article Debate About 1948 and it shed a great deal of light on post-war propaganda on the Isreali side to make the nation out to be the ultimate victim of the situation and the Arabs are all predatory though there were attempts to achieve peace from three Arab nations right after the establishment of Isreal that got rejected by the then-Isreali government. What puzzled me somehow is that some Isrealis even denounceed the occurrence of massive massacres in the British Mandate Palestine culminating in the foundation of Isreal. No wonder some Isrealis thought that Palestinians are a bunch of barbaric tribal people who are just out to get blood. Some would even suggest that they were just a group of Arabs (completely generalise a people with distinct culture) so they should go back to where they belong. There is another myth that I encountered which didn't make much sense, they said since Palestine was never an independent soverign (which I already knew), it was up to Britain to decide who they wanted to hand the land to. The logic behind it seems somehow appalling, if the situation didn't occur in favour of them, instead the land was transferred to one of the European imperial colonist, it would certainly look very problematic to most of the people. I understand the atrocities that Jews had suffered before the foundation of the Isreali State but it is definitely a historical injustice to the people of Palestine.

This seems more than a little one sided to me. I am trying to gain perspective but tend to throw out accounts that paint one side as totally innocent and the other as the pure cause. This is NOT how thing usually are. I get very frustrated that it seems that nobody has a balanced perspective.

Don’t worry.. although there is a lot of truth in this interview, it’s very one sided. He said he was ok with everything until Israel took and occupied land that wasn’t theirs after the 1967 war.. well guess what; under international law it is legal to occupy land of a neighbour if you are attacked.. there is a lot of context that has been left out for sure

I am sad there are civilian deaths on both sides. It sickens me. However, I have a couple questions. Before the six day war Israel did not occupy Gaza or the West Bank. Egypt occupied Gaza and Jordan had control of West Bank for many years. Why didn’t the Palestinians create a Palestinian state then. Also why was Israel attacked by 5 Arab armies in first place. It seems that peace is an unlikely scenario for the Jews in any border.

However I’d like to know how exactly you negotiate with someone who doesn’t recognize you as a legitimate entity and publicly declared that you must be physically eliminated . The professor suggests to read between the lines of the antisemitic propaganda, I guess. It’s like suggesting the black community to negotiate with KKK etc.

A question that remains unanswered is about the situation before 1967 when Gaza and West Bank were with Egypt and Jordan respectively and after the war on Israel the six day war led to the current situation. Before 1967 who was Goliath and who was David? It would be helpful to know the views from both sides.

Isreal is the size of Manipur State/Province in India. On the other hand, Jordan, Syria, Saudi Arabia have very big geographical areas where most of Palistanian can be rehabilitated. The Palistanian are ethnic Arab and they can settle anywhere in neighbour's Arab countries. But Isreal must give full political right to ethnic Palistanian living in Isreal like any other Jews citizen. The rulers of Isreal must not behave like corrupt Jews rulers in ancient Isreal. Palistanians deserve justice like another people living in Isreal or Gaza or West Bank. Iran must not interfere in this conflict and the Western countries must help innocent Palistanian.

If you are leaving your country, why not settle in Australia, UK or USA. It is very hot in Saudi Arabia 😞. I left India and settled in Australia. are you from the Indian subcontinent? @@ibrahimshadab1996 then probably you know that Hindus and Sikhs have had to leave their motherland because of Islamist Pakistan movement. In the Punjab, Muslims had to leave the Indian side as well. People have been rehabilitated and moved on with their lives instead of perpetuating a decades long conflict based on land claims. Same has happened with Palestinians in the state of Jordan. This Palestine refugee issue has been fomented by Arab states and now Iran for their own political motives.

There were many reasons for the failure of Oslo Agreement. We heard the Arab view in this interview and we must also know the Israeli view. Conflicts resolution researches tell us that conflicts might be resolved or minimised when both the parties feel heard and seen. The Israeli View: From the perspective of many Israelis, the dynamics of Israeli-Palestinian relations since the signing of the Oslo agreement confirmed their worst fears: that the Oslo process would give a militant enemy the tools and launching areas for bloodthirsty terrorist attacks against Israelis. Very early on during the establishment of the security services of the Palestinian Authority, it was noted by Israeli observers that the number of Palestinians in arms and the types of armaments being brought into Palestinian Authority territory were significantly exceeding the limits established by the agreements. This led to the suspicion that Arafat was constructing an offensive army rather than a police force. But the greatest Israeli anger was elicited by the fact that the Palestinian Authority was doing very little to prevent terrorist attacks emanating from its territory. It refused to take steps towards disarming terrorist militias, permitted terrorist organizations to operate open offices in its territory, and either refused to arrest terrorists or would adopt a policy of “revolving door” arrests-placing terrorists in prison for a handful of days and then releasing them. As terrorist attacks against Israelis exacted a heavy toll in civilians killed and wounded, the entire conception that had been presented to Israelis - of the Oslo process creating efficient Palestinian security teams that would be better than Israeli soldiers in combating terrorism - collapsed. Palestinian explanations that they “couldn’t be expected to be collaborators and fight against their own people” rang hollow to Israeli ears in the face of civilian deaths. Many incidents caused the Israeli public to wonder whether Arafat and the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) had ever truly intended to lay down arms and seek negotiated peace agreements rather than armed struggle: immense arms supplies to the Palestinian Authority were made public; captured documents indicated Palestinian Authority support for terrorist infrastructures; and Palestinian policemen took up arms against Israeli soldiers. For Israelis, this was the ultimate breach of agreement, rendering it moot. The Economic View and Palestinian Authority’s image of a failed state: The economic reconstruction of the Palestinian territories was to be handled by internationally respected Palestinian economists and businesspeople working along with the World Bank and enjoying the financial support of Western donations. Toward this end, as early as November and December 1993, potential donor nations were gathered to commit large sums of money and an organization that was supposed to oversee the new Palestinian Authority economy-the Palestinian Economic Council for Development and Reconstruction (PECDAR)-was formed. These plans were halted by Yasser Arafat. Arafat regarded an independent and authoritative organization such as PECDAR as a potential threat to his power. The entire World Bank vision for a modern, Western-style Palestinian economy, built around competitive markets, transparent and accountable public bodies, and solid financial and legal institutions, went against the grain of the methods Arafat had used to run the PLO for decades. Those methods, instead of the World Bank and PECDAR paradigm, were imposed in the Palestinian Authority. The economy in the Palestinian Authority was since its inception run as if it were a syndicate, with monopolistic control over sectors granted to individuals or institutions in return for “percentage kick-backs” paid to authority figures in a pyramid going all the way to Arafat’s office. These public figures operated under no requirement to make use of the funds at their disposal, whether public money or “kick back payments” in an accountable or transparent manner -a state of affairs generally called “corruption.” Donor money, instead of being invested in infrastructures that could support future job growth, was used to cover salaries for teachers and police officers, which translated into a potentially never-ending dependency on donations-because cuts in donations could threaten the collapse of the entire system. As the Palestinian Authority lacked any clear legal protections for economic activities, private investors refused to come near it. The more terrorism mounted, the firmer Israel became in sealing its borders to Palestinian job seekers. The Palestinian economy went into a downward spiral. By the time the second Intifada led to permanent Israeli closures, choking off all trade, it went into a coma. Observers in Washington have concluded that the Palestinian Authority was a “failed state”

Britain did have a ton of colonies, and in watching a lot of RU-vid videos lately, I do find it fascinating that the victors of whatever recent conflicts came to the table to draw the lines and to hand out the land. But isn’t that how history has always been? And I did see that for the Zionist effort, they looked at Argentina, Africa and Palestine (with us all knowing which one they selected). At some points along the way, it looked like there could’ve been peace in Israel and Palestine, for what is a rather untenable situation.

Great interview! I feel like many facts need to be presented with more detailed. Is there a chance that if Hamas military are terrorist, then people and government that support it are supporting terrorism? Also, professor mentioned that Israel caused the division in Palestinian leadership. Is there a chance that there are actually embedded problems within Palestinian government that are not a plot of anyone and they lead to more problems? Hamas captured power by force in Gaza, so they likely killed many pro-Palestine leaders.
