Been following Josh since he was in high school and Chelsea more recently. I wish social media existed when I was 22 and hear their message. I’d be a mandatory retired airline captain today happily teaching in retirement.

Great interview that really hit home. I've wanted to fly as long as I can remember. In 1984, I tried to become a Naval Aviator, but couldn't pass the physical (astigmatism). Then, in 1995 I starting training for Private Pilot. I soloed and was close to completing training before life again took me in a different direction (new job, moved, engaged, married, kids...). Then, last year, my wife and I stayed at the Hanger Hotel in Fredericksburg, TX. There, I felt a wave of longing and an overwhelming drive to attain what I have desired since childhood. Now, after 59 years, I've completed all requirements and am preparing for my check-ride. Want to get your Private Pilot Certificate? Endeavor to Persevere!

Luckily I’m young at heart 😉 I’m 55, but been dreaming of becoming a pilot since I was 14. I’m now almost done with my ground school, and am starting my flight lessons in august.. Never too late! I go for the sport pilot certificate though, since I don’t see any need for more than one passenger. Wife won’t put her feet in a plane, and my kids are grown and have their own interests. Looking forward to fly-ins and golf trips with my buddy.

I got my PPL in 2002. Sadly have not flown since 2007. I did enjoy it. I flew a 1973 C172 with 180 HP powerplant, tuned exhaust, constant speed prop, and 40 degrees of flaps. Loved that plane. Thanks for the video!

Awesome interview! Everyone who aspires to become a pilot should watch this. My only regret in aviation is not getting into it when I was young like Josh, Chelsea. I was too afraid when I saw the obstacles they mentioned (the big tall fences, having the right contacts, seemingly impossible financial costs etc) Thanks for the video!

Like others have said, y'all are some of my of my favorite aviation RU-vidrs. I soloed when I was , maybe 16 or 17 after 7 hours and flew a bit after that. Kids, life and no money took its toll. Now retired, I have lots of time, no money and looking for a flying deal for old farts. Not to be had. I am currently exploring the idea of getting an FBO near NorthEast Florida to sponsor me through PPL everything else to be able to teach at their place for cheap. So far, "Thats not gonna happen" :-) SO. I think I'll continue to enjoy your videos along with all the other popular vids and live through walls experiences. Keep up the good work, you keep me motivated.

Great show . I became 55 during the show, 8 years flying From zero, 2 years IFR rated…. Love it too. Doing work with lifeline pilots ( board and volunteer) has me thinking about giving up corporate life , no longer joyful, taking 6 months off …. Then flying for my last 5-10 years of my career. Great episode Dan and Christy, thank you. I am currently working on getting my training started for my PPL. Got the group school going and dealing with a small hurdle on my medical. It is difficult to figure out the roadmap to get started. I have wanted to go for it for a long time. Now at 40 I am finally doing something about it. If you have the dream of flying, get a discovery flight and go after it. I truly believe TakingOff and the other big aviation channels have helped motivate me in finally trying to make my dream come true. Great to see Josh and Chelsea on the channel again. Excellent interview! I've been an aviation fan all my many years but don't recall hearing the phrase "killingzone" used, and the context I took it in here as it seemed to be something that applies to brand new pilots, perhaps regardless of age, but when new pilots let their confidence get ahead of their skills there can be dangerous moments when one's over confidence allows them to become distracted and make simple yet possibly dangerous mistakes like flying to slow in the pattern etc? That's how I'm thinking it implies anyway.
@TakingOff

There's a book called "The Killing Zone" that many aviation schools require. It's a very interesting study.

I've been filling out applications after applications for scholarships. Yes, it feels like it's a pointless endeavor especially some of these quick "no essay" sites... that seem a bit sketch... but what else do you do? I don't have contacts beyond our local EAA and MPA (Missouri Pilots Assoc) so I do internet searches and get these sites. But I push on anyway. I start at Ozarks Technical Community College (OTC) this fall for their Commercial Aviation program... I have already received my PPC but It's been a few years...so I'm rusty. Money has been the limiting factor and the reason for going the Part 141 route is because I can get financial aid through the college. I remember watching Josh back when he was Mr. Aviation, that was when I was getting my PPC. Chelsea... wow... she's amazing! Gorgeous, driven, and smart! Josh is a lucky dude.

Christy, you're wrong. For me, I've been very frugal, sought higher paying jobs, been fighting my ass off for five years paying the minimum I can, saving every penny and life has kicked me in the ass at every turn, so I still can't afford flight training. It's not that I'm "not trying", and it's kind of bullshit for you to say something like that especially after COVID has killed a lot of people's savings. The "prioritizing" for me is paying rent and keeping the lights on and food on the table (cheap food!). And FYI, I HAVE been putting in the essays and applications everywhere I can as a male (there are a TON of scholarships for women but not for men). So don't say "you do have the money" when you have no idea what a lot of people's situations are.
@pilotchristy
@pilotchristy Год назад
I didn’t have the money for a long time. I had to wait an additional 10 years to start flying because I couldn’t afford it, so I chose to go into another profession that paid more and worked my way up the ranks there. After a lot of hard work and patience, I was finally able to pay off my debt and afford to buy my airplane. Up to that point I had given up hope after a couple of years and conceded that I’d never get to fly, that it was too out of reach. My message is to never give up that hope. I’m sorry your situation has put you into a corner where you have no choices, and I hope that one day you’re able to realize your goal. Have patience and keep working toward it!
