Excellent video. I really appreciate the detailed "review" of this particular variety. I have a Lamb in my yard that has almost died twice (two different heat waves, under watered) and I am giving it one more spring to thrive before I replace it with another tree.
@caseG80
@caseG80 5 лет назад
prijicrw water it heavily often you should see it come to life make sure there’s a thick mulch layer under your tree and if you have access to horse manure add a few shovel fulls a couple feet away from the trunk on top of the mulch. If not an organic avocado tree fertilizer will be fine. Avocados need a lot of water when temps rise especially if the humidity gets low they will drink tons of water

I live in Los Angeles, I have a Lamb that has been in the ground for just over a year. It had four fruit as a crop this year. The fruit started to turn black in early spring and by April 5th, the fruit began to fall off the tree as you stated in your video. Well the fruit was amazingly delicious!! I was wondering if this is just because the tree is still young that the fruit was ready way before the summer months? My wife, son, and I all did a blind taste test with a Lamb and GEM. My wife picked the GEM as her favorite, and my son and I both picked the Lamb as the best tasting. Anyhow, I really enjoy your videos. Keep them coming and thank you for sharing all of your knowledge. Oh... Before I forget. Can you Profile an Esther avocado and avocado tree profile when you find the time? Sorry for the long winded comment.

Yeah, mature scion on young root stock means the amount of fruit attempted can't be supported until root stock gets bigger and more mature, so it drops fruit.

My lamb did not do well with that 2018 heat up here in North Hollywood... it dropped all of its fruit. :-( Maybe I didn't give it enough extra water. It's doing good this year though.

@@gregalderdotcom Thanks Greg. I have a young Hellen tree that I bought from Epicenter last spring. Its only about 2-3 feet tall. I just planted it a couple of weeks ago. I heard they are a more narrow tree. I look forward to seeing your Hellen tree. Thanks again Greg.

i got 6 lamb hass tree. My tree don't get big. all the energy is put into supporting the fruits. My 3 feet lamb have like 60 fruitlets in August 2018. Now, the number is around 30-35 after self thinning.
@caseG80
@caseG80 5 лет назад
If your trees are freshly planted it’s best to remove the fruit and let the tree focus on its root system this will help the tree greatly for yrs to come. This is good practice for most citrus, avocado and all other fruit trees.

Thank you very much for this review! :-) I planted a lamb at the beginning ofMay this year and I don't know how to evaluate it. I's about 4ft. tall. The leaves around the top foot of it have all dropped off now... but a couple times, since it's been planted, it seems to have sprouted some new little leaves further down. Over all, it still looks kind of puny and a little on the brownish side. I live up on the central coast of Cali... in zone 9a. We are finally out of our "June gloom" phase now and starting to get some hotter days (low-->mid 70s so far). I think I was over-watering it, until recently, so I've backed off quite a bit. Any advise for me? Do you recommend fertilizing/feeding it, while it's still in it's early stages of life (i.e. not fruit-baring yet)? Do you think I should white wash it... even if we don't get hot-hot weather too often? It's probably only getting about 4-5 hours of direct sunlight right now, but there is a huge redwood tree, next door, that will be cut down within the next year or so (due to the land being developed into a new housing project) and then my lamb will be getting an added 3+ hours of sun as well. 🌳🌿🥑🌞☂💧🌊🌈

Thanks for sharing, I have a question about the salts and leaf burning. I pour Epsom salts around the base of my avocado trees. Is that a bad thing to do??
@gregalderdotcom
@gregalderdotcom 5 лет назад
Hi Ariel, I don't know for sure. I've never used Epsom salts under my avocados. Do you have a magnesium deficiency that you're trying to correct?
@caseG80
@caseG80 5 лет назад
Ariel Cortez the salts he’s talking about are completely different from epsom salt. Unless you had your soil tested from a lab and it showed a deficiency for magnesium it’s probably best not to use epsom salt especially how you said you dumped it around the tree. Problem is to much of certain fertilizers like magnesium can cause nutrient lock out making other things to not be available to the trees or plants. Using a specific organic fertilizer designed for avocado trees by the recommend instructions on the bag should be everything your tree needs. You can always add some compost and mulch and never clean under your avocado trees all the leaves that drop feed the tree as well as protect its shallow feeding roots from freezing and from drying out. Give your tree a couple really good waterings to flush the Epsom salts sand if your climate gets dry with low humidity remember to water heavily before during and after avocados do not like low humidity and need a lot of water during this time they are very heavy drinkers.

what is easier to grow? reed or lam? thx
@frankyancy1347
@frankyancy1347 2 года назад
I failed on three Reeds, but now have two doing well. My Lamb is doing well, so I'd say Lamb. But all avos need to be planted correctly with often swallow, frequent water, and heavily mulched.

thanks for making me feel bad, my first tree I planted which died was a lamb and I ended up getting a Hass this second time around. I asked the nursery if it was a lamb and they said yes and I took it home and the tag said Hass.. oh well I got them to truck it over to me for free so I wasn't going to return it. Plus it was the only avocado tree they had left on the lot.

@gregalderdotcom
@gregalderdotcom 5 лет назад
Thanks for adding this. Seems to be the case with my Lamb too. My Lamb has had one off year so far for no obviously good reason (extreme weather, for example) even though the adjacent Reed of the same age hasn't. I've also heard a researcher say that he's found Lamb to alternate a bit more than Hass. That aligns with my experience with Lamb versus Hass.
