The popular demand for avocados, once considered an “exotic” item, is having a devastating impact on a drought-stricken community in Chile. Lying within one of the largest avocado producing regions in the country, Petorca avocado plantations are in a battle over water rights, where claims of illegal water diversion are creating civil unrest.

Chile is effectively exporting its water, and NIMBY’s are happy to buy it as long as they can say they’re saving the environment by eating a ‘plant based’ diet.

Yes! mostwhite people don't knowshit. And their country's media is covering up to make themdumber and dumbereveryday...... Avocados grown are starving the locals. Please stop consuming stop buying. They didn't have this problem until us in America and EU made this food popular and now everyone wants to eat one.....and sometimes it's wasted and thrown into garbage... We need to be part of the problem, and be part of the solution.

I was raised to buy fruit and vegetables seasonally. It’s the best way. Buy domestic, enjoy it while it’s in season, and don’t be a snob. There is nothing wrong with flash frozen domestic foods. There here is nothing wrong with the foods your great grandmother would have stored in her fruit cellar. Apples, pears, root veg, winter squash. We’ve been brainwashed to think we can have everything all year long with no cost. There’s always a cost. Guacamole isn’t even palatable to me right now. Maybe it’s time to start sticking toothpicks in avocado pits again.

James Driscoll avocados are very sensitive to climate. Below 30 degrees they all go bad. It’s not possible outside there. That’s why California and Mexico do very well growing them in certain areas. Unfortunately Cartel are evil thieves. Literally political corruption over fruit, that leads to more corporations. Best thing we all can do is NOT EAT avocado on Super Bowl days, which is the highest consumption day, and buy seasonal CALIFORNIA avocado only.

Some white people say that we Chinese have to give up eating meat for the environment. But actually we eat more vegetables everyday and we plant more vegetables than Europeans. I have been in Germany for 3 years and I think Europeans eat more meat actually. As a physician, I also think meat is a very good resource of protein. But Avocado, Americans can give up eating Avocados first before they force Chinese not to eat meat. Be fair. No discrimination and racism.
