I lived in Asheville from '92 till '00. I spent my 20's there as a Miami transplant. I fell in love. I was able to live in downtown with all my hippie friends. Asheville has changed and it is sad. Oh well, I still had the best time of my life there. I will always love ASHEVILLE.

I have been to Asheville a couple of times and love it. Plan on relocating from NJ by the end of the year by way of NYC. Enjoy most of your videos but this one is a disservice. Nothing you described is particularly a threat or risky. The fact that some areas are crowded is nothing to be alarmed about -- most places with something to offer attract a lot of people for entertainment, cultural appreciation, etc. Instead of instructing people to avoid these places describe what they offer against a personality type or what someone is looking for entertainment-wise or socially. Also, nothing wrong with planned communities. I plan on buying a home in one.

I totally agree. It is really difficult to find a lot wrong with many areas in Asheville, they all offer something special in their own right. I am a huge Asheville fan so it is always hard to make videos against my love for our city. I appreciate your feed back and will consider that for the future when talking about Asheville areas. If you'd like help exploring the idea of the move, I'd be glad to meet with you via zoom so we could chat about it and I can explain more about why this video was made the way it was and go into more detailed when considering your situation.

I come from a smaller town in TN, so while there's lots of people and lots to do, which isn't necessarily a threat or a bad thing in itself, it was just overwhelming/overstimulating for me at first. I'm glad I made the best of things and stayed my contract, given I didn't really research the city before I went there. It is not the quiet little mountain town I remember from when I visited when I was a kid, and I didn't have anyone with me to guide me or even just keep me grounded until I got my bearings. 😉

I would see if I could qualify for Klondyke Homes. It's the projects, but they have income based rents, a bus that runs once an hour, and strangely, there hasn't been a shooting since the pandemic. Just know that if you get an apartment after waiting around for over two years, that your apartment will be kind of small, has no cooling, and is extremely basic. It takes 45 mins to walk to downtown, but once you make it over the interstate bridge to downtown, it becomes less safe to walk. But, generally speaking, Montford Avenue is very walkable and very safe with many people walking with their pets and kids during the afternoon to evening hours. Montford district itself is one of the more pricey areas to live. But, Klondyke is technically in the Montford district at the very tippy top north near the city limits. Klondyke is the best compromise between cheap rent, beautiful views, exposure to bears, ease of access to downtown and (relative) safety from crime you're going to find anywhere in Asheville in my opinion.

Is this as bad as the extent of it in Portland? @joedirt3748
@joedirt3748 5 месяцев назад
Fletcher really isn't aesthetically pleasing. The shops there tend to be either super old '70's era buildings, super new buildings, or industrial buildings. On the airport side, it's in a beautiful valley, but the modern cookie cutter commercial buildings there get in the way of the beauty of the mountains instead of highlighting them or using the view of them as an asset. And, as you mentioned, the Mc Mansions are nothing to brag about either. With that said, It does feature the flea market and what shops Fletcher does have on Asheville Hwy is up and coming and worth paying a visit. Think of Asheville Hwy in Fletcher as a conservative stripped down version of West Asheville without the crime, drugs, alcohol, and weirdness. There is a thriving Christian culture there with the Seed and Feed featuring excellent Christian bluegrass worth listening to even if you aren't a Christian. Also of note, some of the flea market shops are legit shops and are open even during the week. At the flea market, you'll find a thriving Hispanic culture and unique Mexican food you can't find anywhere else in the Asheville region. Just don't complain about the mismatched booths and the cement floor and you'll be just fine. Don't expect this place to be an LGBTQIA* hot spot, but don't expect people to go out of their way to be mean to you if you're LGBTQIA* either. I've gotten significantly less harassment in Fletcher for being transgender than in Downtown Asheville.
