I grew up in the 1970's when "low carb" as it was called back then consisted of really simple stuff. Bacon and egg breakky. Tuna salad with leafy greens lunch. Meat or chicken and veggies dinner. Black tea & coffee and unlimited butter & olive oil. It's mind boggling how complicated it became over the next 50 years.
...and I grew up in a low FAT household and I was overweight and had insane cravings starting the year I started using a wheelchair. I wish my parents would have looked beyond what they thought was right. In the end, I was proof it was bunk.
Loved your video Dr Westman. I have followed the protocol you teach for just over one year. Iam 65 years old and I have lost 130 lbs the past year doing the diet you teach. No keto products just real real foods. Because I haven't got sucked in by all the keto hype, I dont even tell people Iam on keto. I just tell them I did it on a low-carb diet and following your protocol. Thank you for changing people's lives, you did mine.❤
I’m the middle child out of eight, so I started using food as a substitute for attention and comfort from a very early age. Because diabetes runs in my family, I was well aware that it would likely affect me at some point. I simply carried on eating what I thought was a somewhat healthy diet. In May of 2019, I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. My doctor put me on meds. Even with the meds things went the wrong way. I realized I needed to change my way of eating in order to improve my health. Fortunately, my nurse recommended a keto website. And decided to try keto diet. Ever since i went on keto, my type 2 diabetes started gradually improving. I gradually lowered my diabetes medication, untili could go off it completely by February, 2021.
Yea! As a former study in the Academy….I love when you speak exclusively! Your wealth of knowledge, passion and speaking style really gets the education across without the interruption with the interview style!
IMO, You need to talk about the calorie restriction diet as you seem to push this. The fat intake increase is to meet the minimum energy intake or your metabolism will drop in proportion with the reduction of caloric intake. You seem to be pushing a modified DASH DIET which doesn't work long term. Also you never talk about anti nutrients, the 3 primary toxins plants create to stop animals and insects from eating them. If you only address weight loss and T2 diabetes, you miss that most have multiple conditions like RA, inflammation, and autoimmune issues that are linked to plants, seed oils, and processed food. It's all connected...
I find that every time I stray away from your list of what to eat (Page Four), I gain weight and slide off of my diet. I keep trying to add nuts and seeds, and I don't seem to learn that they just don't work. I know what I SHOULD do. I have a sign in my kitchen that says "Keto heals, so keto meals". You are 100% right.
@@musicluvrlaurie6827 I can pack away about a pound of steamed broccoli in a sitting. On top of the rest of my meal, usually 4 eggs, 4 bacon and 1/2 avocado. I do omad so its easy for me to eat all that. lol Going to have to rethink the broccoli.
@@gabardjean-paul3779 You have to put it in context of your total carb count and what else you're eating. If you are at 50-60g per day then broccoli isn't a problem, but if you are trying to stay under 20g you have to be really strict.
So glad you got rid of the interview style videos. They were hard to watch and seemed staged. I really like your style which is similar to how you presented in both of your Masterclasses.
Thanks Dr Westman. I like this format-short and to the point. I’ve lost 50 lbs and am 10 pounds from my goal weight thanks to your approach and your book.
I wish I had learned keto from you 3 years ago. But so glad to know of you now. I share your videos with others that are both new and doing keto a long time. People still ask the same questions over and over. Like "is this keto, is that keto-approved" and so on. One answer now, no such thing as a keto food. Hah
Thank you for this. I would rather listen to you speak instead of answering questions from someone else on your videos. The short talks are very helpful to me
Keto is really a keto diet lifestyle where you certainly can lose weight but it is a diet to eat the food that provides optimal health. I lost 40 pounds on keto in the first 2 months & nothing since, but that's all the weight I needed to lose. Not everyone needs to continually lose lots of weight. But the kind of keto you eat is ultimately determined by your diet goals whether it is weight loss or health. Mine is now health. So we don't & shouldn't eat a one size fits all keto, but what is right for each of us.
Exactly! I went on Keto with my husband. He needed to lose weight & I went on it to eat healthier. I love it but am now too thin. I cheat very little but if I do, I don’t feel guilty.
Omg this is the best Doesn't add to my over stimulated brain! Thank you Dr Westman. I read WWF by Gary Taubes in 2011. Lost 25 lbs and my BMI 19 - 20 ever since. Age 60.
I really like this more relaxed format. Thank you! I’ve been drinking Keto Coffee for a long time. It’s very expensive! I’m happy to know it’s not necessary.😁
Isnt intermittent fasting and some fats good for brain health? Just not overdo?? Will apply these suggestions. Cannot guve up macadamias yet. Its my only yumm.
@@Og-Judy I’m new to this, but my understanding is that excess fat and oil consumption is not recommended and dairy is not a good idea if your weight loss has stalled.
Of course you are correct. I love nuts and cheese (who doesn’t?) and over consuming them stalls me EVERYTIME… great if you are at your target weight, not so much if you are trying to get to your target. Thank you for the emphasis of correct keto to lose weight!
I started innocently enough with 1 oz nuts and soon it crept to 2 oz then 3 oz, etc! Thankfully, I was able to stop eating them altogether. Now, I'm dealing with overeating cheese! I just seem to move from overeating one food to another. I know I'm not eating out of hunger so hopefully I will be able to get this under control soon.
Dr Westman, you up close and personal is the best that I have ever seen! It was a pleasure to meet you in Vancouver when you came and there's no ego with you, it's just you with your doctor's heart and I'm so glad that you are reverting back to that format!
Thanks for the tips! I'm new to keto which I am trying in the hopes of slowing the growth of my cancer. In my attempts to educate myself, I have encountered confusing and confounding information. Thanks for the steer; I also have a daughter with PCOS and this information was helpful.

Well I was very lean until I went keto and now I’m heaviest I’ve ever been. And it’s because I’m doing everything you’ve addressed in this video. Thank you for making this video.
@@ecwestman I would be if I would stick to the plan. Unfortunately I was one of those few people that got the coronavirus and it didn’t hardly bother me at all but now I’ve got the lasting sluggish issue that affects a select unfortunate individuals. I feel like I’ve got Epstein-Barr syndrome. But thank you for your guidance about the ketogenic lifestyle . I feel my lack of positive results is not the issue of the keto lifestyle but it’s me not sticking to the plan.
He’s right. Our journeys are all unique. I have nuts in my healthy keto plan and have lost 75 pounds so far. I do not have them to excess, but to say no nuts does not work for me.
I've lost 93 since last June and I eat a few nuts and some cheese (in making chaffles) just about every day. I also exercise at least an hour over the day and do intermittent fasting of at least 18 hours a day. There are many ways to weight loss and leaving out nuts and cheese definitely wouldn't work for me. Giving up bread, pasta and sugar was bad enough, lol (truly don't miss them now, though).
I totally agree I lost weight eating I guess you can say dirty keto. I was eating a lot of keto processed foods and I stalled out. That's why I'm doing your phase 1 plan now so I can get down to goal. Thank you and can't wait to get the end your carb confusion cookbook.
I like the new format. I love how you teach Rx keto. I wish I had found it when I started out almost 4 years ago. I maybe would have hit my goal weight by now. But instead I found "internet keto" and that slowed my weightloss. Great information here.
One of your most helpful videos ever. I prefer this style! It reminded me of a few things that I had been overlooking! Really prefer this style vs the interview style that I found distracting.
Excellent format- very enjoyable to hear you speak your peace and not be constrained by an interviewers specific questions. You also appear to be more comfortable with this approach. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us and for your book- it has been extremely helpful.
Good new format👍 Key words: - Real food - Single ingredient. It seems as though the “Keto” label has been hijacked by the food industry. Oh dear. Convenience products that are labelled and packaged are less likely to be real food/single ingredient. Keeping to basics helps you know what is going into what you consume. If it takes a bit more effort, maybe that reinforces that what we consume is serious business🙂 I like to think in terms of… Convenience foods: - convenient for consumption - inconvenient for health That was a very helpful prompt regarding nuts, Dr Westman. As you have said in other videos you have published, nuts can be a trigger food and can easily lead to excess, one nut after another until the packet is gone…
I knew they would try to hijack it in order to promote the same old crap they have been shoving down our throats. I’m sick and tired of all this fake food.
I like the calm, relaxed style of your new format and you always present information in a clear manner...thank you. I started keto in a country that had no 'keto snacks' and it was a lot easier to stay in ketosis. I had no trouble skipping the snack aisle in the grocery because it was all way too high in carbs. Now that I'm back in North America, I find it more difficult because some of those Keto treats seem 'reasonable'. My rationale is always, 'it's better than a regular treat and I don't have bad glucose spikes so....' Intellectually, I know better but it's still way too tempting to pick up a sugar free chocolate bar or low carb loaf of bread.
I’m thankful for this at this time. I’ve been keto for going on four years and initially lost 30# but I still eat too much keto real food. Lol. Anyway, Lent is approaching and I hope to be more strict.
So simple doing Keto just count your carbs and keep it under 20 to lose and 50 to maintain after you hit your goal, one thing you should also do is intermittent fasting.
This format is great. It uses your natural talent for straightforward communication and refusal to complicate things. As someone who has done 30 years of interviewing during my career, I recognize that interviewing is time-wasting and less effective in teaching. I also thank you for informing me not to eat a lot of cheese, cream, oils, and butter or eat any nuts or nut products. Keto is working for me, but my excessive cheese and nuts consumption has been slowing my weight loss. My preference for simplicity and minimalism make Keto agreeable and it is easy for me to stick to natural foods that I prepare in the simplest possible way. The proliferation of "Keto" products reminded me of Snackwells so I already avoid them.
*It's easy to get overwhelmed with all the information out there, but your clear and concise explanations have made it easier for me to make better choices. Knowing which foods can hinder my progress is essential. Thank you for sharing* 😊
Dr. Westman can you make a video on why Dr. McDougall promotes vegan high starch/ carbs no fat no salt to promote weight loss? In your research have you compared a fat burner verses carb/sugar burner lipid numbers is there a difference if so what are they? Thank you😁
I keep kosher and this company recently changed their beef bacon - new and improved less fat and labeled it as keto SMH. It was great, now it is awful.
I am one of the ones that like the taste of apple cider vinegar. However, I do suggest being careful with it if you do keto. A combination of ACV, metformin, and the keto diet caused ketoacidosis. So ACV is okay or metformin is okay, but avoid both of those with keto.
I like this new format. It reminds me of the first video I saw of yours years ago; the white coat video where you taught your patients about following page 4. After watching that video I started keto and have eaten that way ever since.
What a great video. I'm down 45 lbs since July and have not used MCT oil, or other promoted "keto" products....like the ketone drink mixes or fat bomb drinks. I wondered if I should be trying these things. YOU sir are an inspiration and I trust the information you put out. Thank you for helping me on my lifestyle changing journey.
It is hard for me to give up sugary drinks so I have an occasiobal sip of Pepsi Max when I crave sweets and it helps, I know aspartame is not good but still think sugar is worse and I try to limit Pepsi Max/Coke Zero but have a bottle in the fridge to sip a bit with dome meal when I want sweets
My personal favorite - Keto Friendly foods I see every where. The ‘ keep it simple” is the most challenging to the human psyche. Enjoyed this, have to admit I clicked because the title sparked me. 🔥. There are no keto foods keto/ketosis is a state of being. Or, I led myself to believe. 🙃 Glad you cleared that up early on. “Keep it Simple”.
I 💚💜💙 your new format! I feel like you are talking directly to me, which makes me feel accountable to you. Dr. Westman, you're awesome and a Lifesaver!!!👏👏👏👏🙏💚💜💙

Dr. Westman, if you haven't made one already, you might consider doing a short video explaining the differences between a prescription keto diet and a non-prescription keto diet, used for weight loss and/or overall well-being not associated with extreme obesity or diabetes. I appreciate the information you share, but after reading the comments, it appears to me that a lot of your viewers are eating using a less restrictive protocol. Could you please explain the differences between prescription and non-prescription and who should be following each? Thank you!
Exactly! I see the majority of people in videos like this are not insulin resistant or have type 2 diabetes. Drives me nuts when people are freaking out when their fasting blood sugar is in the 90’s or close to 100, when a person like myself would love to even be in the 90’s!
I am from Peru, I am on keto because the diabetes, I am on keto 1 year and 6 month and my glucose now is normal, but I was to skinny with this diet and I start to add to my food lunch pecans, walnuts and cheese or sour cream and I am fine now. I am 52 year old and my problem start 2 years ago after a hysterectomy and I am 5’1 tall and I am 117 pound, I don’t want to lose weight, but if I stop the nuts or cheese I am going to lose weight and don’t want to lose weight. What I can to do?
Dr. Westman has these restrictions for folks that are looking to lose weight. If weight loss is not an issue for you, you can include higher fats into your diet.
Just discovered your channel Dr. Westman. Thank you so much for your clear explanation of eating a low carbohydrate diet as well the proper foods to include in that diet. I’m just starting this journey so I will be viewing all your videos & absorbing your teachings like a sponge.
No need for weight loss; but need to maintain or gain weight. Just plain metabolic health. Nobody is talking about that. If I need to maintain or gain weight, I need extra fat in the diet - so butter, coconut oil, whipped cream, et al are essential. Otherwise my weight drops like a rock.
Makes sense. My understanding is that fat is a "lever" once you are at maintenance that you can increase to help you maintain/stabilize your weight (including reintroducing nuts or more cheese). Eating more protein or fattier cuts of protein can also be part of the equation. Others may choose to raise their carb level a bit. Maintenence becomes its own learning curve similar to weight/fat loss in figuring out what works for you and what doesn't.
"Prescription Strength Keto" works so well for me - took me 4 weeks to break cravings. I don't have much weight to lose, but dropped 5kg in 4 weeks, I know it will go slow now for the last 3 kg's. BUT I feel so much better, never starving and do 20 minute moderate Rebounding daily and try my best to do 10 000 steps as day.
@@karooblue7634 Ha ha! Sorry. Just a bad habit of mine. Not a spelling error 'recieved' is a spelling error. 'lose' and 'loose' are completely different words (like your and you're which I will DEFINITELY correct you on. Ha ha!). Keep on keepnig on. This second time around on serious keto after being off of it for 8 months is moving MUCH slower for me than it was when I first started 4 years ago. Very frustrating!
Iv just subscribed to your videos...l must admit to being confused and a little disheartend with the copious amount of information there is on keto...it just seems so conflicting...l have tried keto and couldn't do the coffee with oil it just made me throw up...other recipies for pancakes etc..the end result was so awful...anyway l want to go back to keto but without the nonsense and thats when l found your videos...so lm taking your advice and shutting all the others down...thankyou for making it a whole lot easier to understand..😊
Hi Dr Westman, I am back! I played too long and gained too much weight. Had to realize that I really MUST follow a keto lifestyle . Love the art work in the background too! Loved this video.
Brahahaha. I wanna see person stick to these strict guidelines 8-10 months into the keto journey. Why so strict? Make sure you get 1600-1800 cal daily with 60/20/20 macros split and YOU WILL LOSE WEIGHT. Who cares if you fit into it OCCASIONALY keto approved processed junk ? As long as it keeps you on the keto path journey and make you feel like it’s doable DO IT. Again, as long as you are in deficit and doing 60/20/20 YOU WILL BE FINE. It doesn not have to be this hard or this strict. Let get realistic.
If this works for you, fine. But then why are you watching a keto video? Many people have tried doing calorie controlled diets for years without success. And if you are diabetic or prediabetic, it makes no sense to eat carbs.
I have followed Dr Westman’s Page 4 for 1 year (lost 30 kgs - 90 to 60 - 2 to go!). This is the easiest “Diet” I’ve ever been on in my 68 years, and I’ve been on plenty over the years! Why eat supposed “Keto Approved” processed junk - approved by who? Junk is junk and expensive junk at that!
Thank you Dr. Westman for your help with this issue of fake keto foods. I don't consume them but plenty do. I hope they hear this message and take it to heart.
There he is! My tried and true Dr. Westman. Im glad for the change back to this format. No fluff. Just the facts. I Clicked on this video just to see if anything had changed and almost choked when you said NO NUTS! as I was eating a handful of raw pecans,🤣 But its true, very slippery slope to try and fit those into the page four plan. You will definitely be rocking the boat! DONT DO IT!!! Listen to THIS Doctor.
I'm doing a healthy Keto more Mediterranean but I don't have a weight issue. 10 yrs now since 28 my triglycerides are crazy high 5x normal to last year. I did Keto but can only get to 2 x normal. I have to say that I am somewhat confused. You talk about not eating "keto labled" foods and yet when I go to your website, you sell these types of products.
The Adapt Keto Bars are VERY low in total carbs and have been carefully formulated. As good as they are, they should not replace real food. Please take a look at our educational website Adaptyourlifeacademy.com
Yeah, they contain nuts, coconut, butter, mtc oil, etc. You make it very confusing. Don't eat these things but buy my products that contain them. It makes it very difficult to know what to do.
I am just getting started with the keto lifestyle and you were recommended as a great source. This video helped me a lot, I will push the nuts to the back of the pantry.
Don’t bake them! If they are what got you fat in the first place, stay away! Don’t replace one bad food with another! My only sweet treat is a sugar-Free jello with 1 tablespoon of double cream every night at 8 pm!
