If your water softener springs a leak or malfunctions in any way, what would you do? You know you get up in the middle of the night in your house or someone else’s and you hear water running somewhere in the house. You quickly check around and soon enough realize that water is running through the water softener. Maybe you aren’t sure how long it should be running for, maybe it seems to be running far longer today than ever before, so what should you do? You want to get back to sleep but you want to make sure you do the right thing!
You would probably just unplug it right? Nope that’s the wrong thing to do and I’ll show you why right now. If the water softener is currently in a cycle and you unplug it, the water softener will stay in that same cycle! So if it’s in a cycle where water is running to drain, which it almost always is during regeneration, water will keep running to drain at a rate of about 5 gallons a minute forever!

See what happens if I unplug this Clack WS1 valve water softener while it is in it’s back wash cycle. It just keeps on going! The same thing happens with each of these three water softener valves.
You’re far better off to try to advance the valve by pushing the Regeneration button several times until it gets back to the home position and then bypass it until it’s been checked out. If you can’t advance the valve, just bypass the water softener to minimize wasted water! Show several bypass valves as an example of how to bypass each one. Some water softeners have a 3 way bypass • How Does a 3 Way Plumb... built around them and can be bypassed that way, or if all else fails just shut off the water to the house and go back to bed!

Well on a unit that the back wash step is flushing the resin out of the unit. I noticed this so I throttled the water into the unit. this pretty much stopped the loss of resin but continued the backwash. What is your suggestion in the future?

What is a regenerative mode? What is back washing? Why is it bad to go through a lot of water? Have you ever seen a twin tank salt bin combo? We have a set. We know the tank closest to the salt is the water softener but the other tank with it's own digital head we aren't sure what it might be

Wasting water is bad because you are wasting precious resources and money. you likely have an iron, sulphur or tannin filter in addition to the water softener

Thank you for helping take the mystery out of the "Water Softener". I knew what it was supposed to do, but never really understood what was going on inside when something failed. I'am on my 2nd Waterboss unit and have found them trouble-free for many years. Now mine is acting up and your videos are very helpful. I had to find one small in size, over 30 years ago, that would fit in my crawl space, and have stuck with Waterboss since. Their site doesn't provide the details of the device operation that you do.......Great Job !!! I stumbled across your site while looking for help with my unit on RU-vid. Thank you for your excellent knowledge and videos. I obviously have a salt issue, wrong type and overfilling :(( Will be in touch, many thanks again.

Thanks! However as a woman living alone, my only option was removing the fuse for the water! I had water spewing out everywhere at 1:30 am! I thought it was pouring rain outside and then realised the noise was coming from the basement. Went down only to get soaking wet! Thing is, I called for the same problem 3 weeks ago and it cost me 400 bucks to “fix it”. Am more than furious! Wish I could share the video jeee somehow to show u :(

My water tastes too salty. We have an new Excalibur system. I can see water above the salt in the brine tank and our installer said that was fine.

Did they test the water before the installation and program your water softener to the correct settings? Usually those guys don't and that causes the problem.

I have a water softener and the panel says call on it if I push a button the call goes away but comes back up after a short period of time the valve looks like a clack valve with the red arrow flow nobs

Yes, someone programmed that in so you would call them once a year for a service call you likely don't need. We never use that. I would just ignore it.

Thanks for the great videos Gary. What about water outages, vs power outages? I shut off the water of my second home when I'm not there. But I have never unplugged the water softener. Can the system run dry during regen (I can't tell if suction to the brine tank is coming from a pump)? Should I unplug it and/or use the bypass when I shut the main water valve?

Great question! No you don't need to unplug the softener as since there is no water nothing will happen during regeneration. When the water is back on, just regenerate it manually.

When I run my water softener I'm finding less water pressure. When I turn off the valve to the incoming water into the system the water pressure is fine. I regenerated three times yesterday with a liquid that was told that cleans the mineral bead. Now my brine tank is almost full of water.

Quick Question: should a water softener be draining throughout most of the regeneration cycle? I’m not sure if this is normal or if my water softener is malfunctioning. Also, what hardness setting is recommend for the Midland area? It looks like my unit is set to 27.

My rheem softener, at the end of the regen cycle, makes an insanely loud water rushing sound. Wakes me up all the time. It does stop though after a few minutes. Cant find much information on loud water rushing sound. Is this normal? Literally sounds like I have a major water leak in the house.

I have a 2016 NOVO 485HE High Efficiency Water softener. We moved into our home a few months ago. I ran a manual regeneration again today becasue the last one was about July 11th. The water meter is showing that we still have a lot left, same as to be used. Almost like it is not softening the water. I can tell when I shower that the water softener is not working. My parents have one and live in same community.... Something wrong, I can't get the water to soften. Help! I have the water hardiness set on 14 grains. I have gone more and less, nothing helps. I checked the bypass it is in the proper position to work.

Sorry to hear. When you manually ran the regeneration, did you hear water running to drain? It is at least 1/2 full of salt, correct?

@@GarytheWaterGuy Yes, the manual says to fill with salt just above the water line. I did. Yes, I listened to the regeneration cycle and seemed to go through the who process. Yes, water was running through it. Definitely could hear that.

I have a Whrilpool Model WHES40 water softener. It's about 20 years old. I noticed the water keeps running, even when it is not in the recharge mode. So, of course, I unplugged it. The water kept running. I can tell because there is a pipe in the laundry room that discharges water when the water softener is in the recharge cycle. In this case, the water keeps running no mater what, whether the motor is on or off. Fortunately, I have a bypass valve independent of the water softener, and I can bypass the unit. The water has stopped. The recharge motor works. The display shows error 3. I assume the valve is stuck in the open position. Maybe I need to replace the switch? I think it is stuck in open position.

II have a Moen Flow auto water shut off installed in my main pipe. Recently, during the regen cycle, the Moen flow suspected a leak and shut off the water. I’l deal with Moen later. But my current concern is, what can occur to the water softener, when water is shut off to the unit during the regen cycle?

Love the info you provide! Question for you. Is there a need to install a 3 valve bypass if there isn't one presently in my plumbing for my water softener lines. Should purchasing a water softener with a bypass suffice? My lines are 3/4". Also, I was thinking of adding ball valves (FIP-MIP) to my threaded in and out lines coming out of the wall. Would you suggest teflon tape on the threads? Also, one (in) is facing straight and the other line (out) is facing down. Is that something that needs to be changed?

I had a well still have a water softener in bypass mode that malfunctioned it managed to flood the leach field and drain the well ruined the well pump which turned into a very expensive pain in the butt. We had a plumber service it once a year he pooped the face plate off played with something in there dumped something in the brine tank and drained the spin down strainer. Im a little worried about using this thing again I called a well diggers place they want 4 to 8 thousand dollars for a new system which I don't even lime buying salt lugging it around and its not cheap anymore either. I definitely don't want this thing draining in my septic again they said well you can drain the wash water into a rock well or down your driveway only we can't do it you have to ? Huh ? That sounds sketchy. Do these electronic descalers work? I've been trying to find an alternative to water softeners using salt and water I don't have the greatest well unfortunately the water is crap it has maganese rust amd is hard probably not as horrible as some Ive heard of but we buy water for cooking and drinking and ya know have had to about anywhere we have lived.

Hi Gary! I have the Gold Kinetico water softener. One night, I noticed that water continuously flowed without stopping into drain. I added a bag of salt inside, but still water kept flowing. So I put it on bypass, but haven't used it for several months. Can I use it again? What should I do? It's so hard to open the bypass valve. I've tried everything, but still could not open it. Your water softener valve needs to be rebuilt. Try shutting off the water before the water softener, releasing the pressure by opening a faucet and then bypass.

Hi Gary, my system doesn't look like any of these. It's a very large putty colored tank. Started running every 55 seconds at 1:13 am, and it's now 2:56 am. I couldn't find the shut off valve so I turned off the water to the entire house. I wish Culligan would put out a short instruction sheet on how to turn off the system since it seems this is a common problem. :(

Do you have any suggestion of what might be wrong? I really appreciate any advice. Last night I have never heard it before it was really loud waking the neighbors then this morning the salt is at the bottom and the small amount of water is clear? Usually it’s cloudy water. My Ecopure water softener had running water out of a full tank. And water all around the electronic/mechanical controls!! I tried the bypass valve first, no luck, to much pressure. Then turned off main house water valve. Now, there's the pressure off, and can move softener bypass valve now. Water stopped. Took off control panel lid and water all up in there. Control panel all wet and Flashing!! I Didn't want to keep electric plugged in so I unplugged power.

That must be a very old water softener so I would follow the advice in this video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-c8QKYr3B02I.html Add a couple bags of salt, make sure there are a couple of gallons of water in the brine tank, wait a day for the water to absorb the salt and manually regenerate the softener. Regenerate again after a couple of days.

Hi. My water tech guy replaced the internal mechanism with computer for my salt water softner. I had my system since 2008. My water still feels hard and notice salt level has not gone down. doesnt seem like water is disolving the salt. What is your advise to resolve issue?

My water softener has been not used in years. It has no codes. And the filter is clean. It does have a clack water valve with bypass turned on. If I manually run it through the cycles it leaks when it goes to the fill cycle. And my question is does that mean that the tank has a restriction and it’s not allowing it to fill? I did take the valve out and make sure it is no debris.

I have a Runcin F67Q1 water softener valve which is straightforward to connect and charge a resin tank with resin. The DC 12volt connection also no problem. How is the brine tank connected to the resin system for flushing? the F67Q1 valve has 3 ports : IN, OUT and DRAIN.

No it will not but I always suggest you plug your water softener into a surge suppressor to protect the circuit board.

Hi Gary, my friend has a Novo water softener and it hasn’t been used in a year. I cleaned out the salt tank and wiped out the sides too. 3 bags of salt where added. So it’s about 2/3 full, the water was turned on and the regeneration mode was set. It did it for about 1hr and 40 mins. But I didn’t hear any water flow or anything being pumped out the drain? Is there a step I’m missing ?

Gary my man! I have a question. There's a hard freeze coming to my town. I have an apollotek equinox home water filtration and water softener system. Looks like it has the same valve as the one in your video. The one in the middle of the 3 to the right of the screen. What should I do to protect the tank from freezing and causing damage? It's a really big tank to try and insulate. I don't have any pipe insulation on my exposed pipes. So I'm contemplating on shutting off the water from the city valve and draining my pipes through all the faucets to prevent my pipes from bursting. Do I unplug the system and let the water drain out? Or do I leave it on and drain it? Is there a setting I have to configure to for something like this? Please help me out Gary. It's going to get down to around 15 degrees F.

I'm only one skinny dude, and this tank is huge and super super heavy, supposedly this is the biggest tank on the market from what I read, I don't think I can handle tipping it over without dropping it, and the air compressor method is not possible for me, my plumber friend told me to just layer it in covers and blankets tightly, unplug it, and turn the main city water switch off, and drain out my faucets, I have been filling buckets and buckets of water to use while the water is shut off, does that help to empty the tank before I unplug it? This freeze will only last about 3 to 4 days , freezing mostly at night, Monday will be an all day frozen temps with rain and snow, I layered my tank with 3 layers of bed covers, tied a rope around the bottom of the tank over the covers so cold won't easily seep in from the bottom and put a blue tarp over it so the covers won't get wet, will this be sufficient?

We are based on borewell which is 1250 ft where water levels are less and contains mud and other particles which blocks the taps if we on regeneration lot of water is going on. Can we retreat and use for daily cleaning activities because we r living in water scarcity area

If you bypass thre water softener there will not be any water running through it to be able to regenerate.

I’ve turned the dial to brine rinse and I hear the water running but the dial won’t move to backwash . The running water eventually stops but the dial stays out on brine rinse. I e seen in your videos that dial should automatically turn to backwash.

If you mean the brine well, about 3" in diameter with thefloat inside? You need to remove all of the salt, clean every thing out of the brine well and start over. Your water softener can easily flood the area in which it is installed when that happens.

Hello Gary, My water softener regenerates every 14 days. No Issues while using the water every day while the house is occupied. However, if I leave the house for more than a few days, when I return, the water is brownish in color. After running the water at the sink for several minutes, it clears up. I have a chlorine filter at the water softener but this does not appear to help mitigate the issue. The water softener is only 2 years old. Thoughts?

We unplugged the waterboss 700 which we know was incorrect. Now the softener will regenerate to 02 but won't move out of 02 & won't stop. we've by passed but when we take it out of by pass it won't move beyond. Now what?

I have a slow leak that seems to be coming from right under the bypass valve. I tried to bypass but the valves won't budge. Also, I have 2 towers. One has the red bypass valves (which I can bypass) and the other has the black valves, which is where the leak is but won't budge.

We just bought a cottage that has a Vigua Impression Series system. During the pre-purchase inspection in April all seemed to be working well and there was salt in the brine tank. The cottage has been unoccupied until we took possession this week. The salt in the brine tank was gone so we added two bags and ran a manual regeneration. Our water is very cloudy (haven’t tested the hardness yet) and it looks like water isn’t getting into the brine tank. There is a fill tube with a float. The float moves freely and seems to be resting in the down position but there is only a small amount of water (maybe an inch) at the bottom of the tube. There is water visible i. The clear tube that feeds the brine tank but it looks like it’s not filling. Any suggestions?

Watch it as you manually regenerate it. You should see water being added during the first or second cycle. The being slowly sucked out during the regeneration cycle. I have your WATER BOSS style bypass with the knob on top of the unit. The knob turns to the bypass position but doesn't divert the water. It continues to run water out the drain hose at full force. It ran for 8 hours before I turned off the water to my entire house. Can you tell me how to fix my bypass valve so I can turn the water back on to my house.

Hi Gary, I have a question about my brine tank water level. We just dumped out our brine tank and cleaned it thoroughly and replaced the brine well and valve and float assembly with brand new one. The control head on my water softener is exactly the same as the one in your video at 2:20. As the water level goes down during the Brine Draw phase, eventually the water level gets very low and I hear air and water sucking sound through the brine tube connector, but there's still 22 more minutes to go in that BD cycle and it's making that sucking air and water sound for the remainder of that cycle. The water level never gets any lower in the brine tank during that time. My question is do I have enough water in that brine tank? I have my hardness setting on 11 and a regeneration every 14 days. My water test said I have 1 PPM of iron, and 10 PPM of hardness.

It is normal to run out of water since this cycle is actually the brine draw/rinse so it does both brine and rinse once it runs out of brine.

Hi Gary. I watch a couple of homes for friends while they are away for the summer...AKA "snowbirds" and they are gone months not weeks. They each have a water softener in their homes and turn the main water valve off while they are gone. I have heard that there is the potential for bacteria growth inside the resin when they are not used for more than a few weeks. Leaving the water off to the home is important because of the damage that water can cause in a short period of time. So what is one to do? Any suggestions? One company representative said to install a by-pass but not sure how that would work.

Water Softener Help. Looking for some help or suggestions for a Eco Water Softener. My water softener has been recharging/regenerating for several hours. The recharge is set to recharge/regenerate in the middle of the night. This morning when I opened my garage door I could hear it running, that was around 8:00 am and it's still running. I tried calling Eco Water Systems and also tried to google it but no help at all. I'm tempted to pull the power plug to stop it but I'm afraid of possibly causing damage. Not sure what to do or after watching your video how to by pass. So glad I watched your video before unplugging. Thanks. If you could tell me how to bypass and what's causing it to still regenerate I would be very thankful. The recharge is set for 2:00 am and it's now 12:30 pm and still going.

I found the bypass and turned it off. I recently filled with salt after I realized I hadn't checked it in a while and it was down to the bottom and it was all sludge. I completed emptied the the sludge out and rinsed the tank and filled back with salt. I'm not sure where to go from here. The salt is at # 6 or 7. Not sure if the problem is a clogged line. what to do? Thanks in advance and thank you very much for the video about the bypass.

It sounds like either your motor failed or the piston is stuck. You will either need to have the valve rebuilt or the water softener replaced.

Hi Gary, I recently had work performed on my well. They bypassed the water softener during repair to install a check valve. However, they left the softener in bypass. Any reason for this ? Apparently I have a leak down the line, but I feel the ongoing sediment will not be good for the overall plumbing in the meantime?

I love your work Gary. Quick question. I am trying to trouble shoot a water hammer noise, which sounds like a chunk, chunk, chunk, maybe once a second for about 10 seconds. It happens at random times, typically in the evening or first thing in the morning (when no water is in use). I suspected the water softener until I turned the red by-pass valves to by-pass my Excalibur water softener. The problem was still there. Any ideas?

Firstly, thank you for the videos! I'm a novice and I went to turn on my bypass (for watering my plants) using the 2 red knobs but they wouldn't budge. So I thought I had to remove one of the pins near the knobs... BIG MISTAKE! Water started shooting out of my softner as the pin held a plug, I later discovered. I shut off main water valve and cleaned up the mess. Anyway, after reinserting plug and pin I could easily turn on bypass. Any ideas as to why I couldn't turn bypass knobs prior to pulling that darn pin? Do I need to shut off my main water before turning them? Thoughts or suggestions very much appreciated!

Great question! Likely the bypass had not been used for a long time and has partially seized up. I always suggest you "excercise' the bypass once per year.

Sir, thank you very much for your informative videos! We (Texas) just went through an unprecedented winter storm where we lost electricity and my household lost water for four days. When we lost water, I bypassed the softener so it would stop working. Now that the water is back and pressure is normal, is there anything that must be done with the softener other than put it back into service from bypass? My backwash head is generating a consistent fine noise similar to gas leaking sound.. when I bypass it, the noise disappears completely after a few minutes.. I tried to clean the injectors but it didn’t help. The sound seems to be coming from the valve area.. it does back wash and filtering well I guess, it’s just the sound that I’m concerned about.. any idea what is that and what should I do?

HELP!!!! I have a GE # GXSH40V. Completely cleaned the Tank, purged air from system, reinstalled, poured 3 gallons of water, added 3 bags of salt, plugged in unit, set all the info/time/hardness/salt-level/recharge time. Then i hit recharge now. Everything seemed fine, i walked out, then back in, and notice water everywhere, not too bad, but i was puzzled. So I stayed in the garage for over an hour as it continued. I regularly checked the drain hose and saw it was draining. As it was close to the 2 hour mark, i thought i go inside...came back and water was spewing EVERYWHERE, I panic is an UNDERSTATEMENT. I saw an ERR with call for service... I immediately unplugged my unit, and begin the wet vac pickup and blowing fans. Everything got drenched! the housing rim and everything in it like the valve covering, and WIRING!!!! WHAT is my next immediate steps? Turn the unit back on? Manually drain the tank? Your direction is GREATLY NEEDED.
