The NTSC to PAL was huuuuge. I'm American, bought our camera in US, moved to UK and the LED light strips we bought over here were strobing like crazy. Couldn't figure it out on any other videos about this. Thanks man!
Some tips to help out those in Europe... Filming in 25fps and 50fps and 100fps it is safe to use any shutter speed. Shooting in 30fps you can use 1/100, 1/50 or 1/33.3. Shooting 60fps or 75fps you can use 1/100. 120, 240fps it isn’t safe to use any shutter speed so make sure it’s only used outdoors and away from electronics.
I'm admittedly already familiar with what you discuss in the video, however, I do wish I watched this when I first began videography a few years ago! It is super informative and I expect this will help many new beginners. Well done!

+I'm Jason Anthony Man, I might miss something, but it seems I didn't. I believe that you forgot to mention the right way: the shutter speed of 1/60 is the solution for the NTSC region flicker. Not 1/24 or 1/30 (which is blurry af), but 1/60. Or 1/120 for higher frame rates. The motion blur will be almost the same, but there wil be no flicker anymore. RED also sugests to use 1/40 sec to prevent the flicker in NTSC regions. Just try this ind feel free to make a part two if it helps.
What about black barring caused by LED lights? I film with a GoPro 8 and supposedly I can adjust shutter speeds and frame rates. What settings would get rid of the black barring that slowly goes from bottom to top in the video?
I'm a bit confused by this advice. Setting the equivalent SHUTTER SPEED to the frequency of the lights will (in most cases) eliminate or reduce flicker. The typical frequency of lights is either 50hz or 60hz (depending where you live). So, you should ALWAYS make sure your shutter speed is NOT LESS than 1/50th or 1/60th of a second when shooting with artificial lighting. Going slower with the shutter speed, as you seem to suggest is very likely to INCREASE the flicker rate and not reduce it.
Dude that was Genious. I normally shoot at a 80D and never had any issues with a flicker but just picked up a 250D as a secondary ad a backup and I was getting the flicker bad. I tried bumping the shutter up and it just made the video look crazy. So I watched this video and took it to 1/30 and it worked like a charm. Huge thanks brother. New sub! Keep them coming.
i have a device that can only capture 24,30,60,120 fps. shooting in a PAL country, is it OK to use shoot using 30 and 60fps and using shutter speeds that are multiples of 1/50 (1/100, 1/200)?

Thank you! Great help. I bought an “import” Sony RX-100 VA pre-set to PAL (50Hz). All my videos had flicker! Changing Shutter speed offered some improvement. Changing my settings to NTSC (60 Hz) Worked wonderful !!!! The Sony manual has almost no explanation. Thanks !

Thank you for this great video: everything is clear. There is a situation though where I couldn't know how to fix it: Imagine you want to take a shot at 60fps and i decide to let on purpose the light source visible in the frame, how will you fix the issue regarding that you need to be at least at 1/125 shutter.. ( I recorded at 60 fps because I needed to do slow motion later in post, and I used the 2 x fps rule because I had a fast movement in the shot and want to avoid motion blur of my moving object) : What should i do in this case? Is there no other way than removing the source light from the frame ? [In case you wonder what issue i m facing: well, the light source is constantly flickering, which you explained why of course ]
Fixing frame rates in post is ually a fool's game - risky at best and there are side effects. Unfortunately this is one of the things which the rule of "garbage in, garbage out" applies. If it is a static shot the way to deal with it is to create a mask and create an artificial light to go in its place. I recommend any software which has good masking capabilities. Yes, we now find ourselves in post but not dealing with faulty frame rates. This can also be accomplished in some cases with a moving shot but is much more involved - it is possible with software such as Adobe After Effects using follow-masks and a couple of other techniques.

I have a Monster brand LED strip going along the back of my desk. Had a problem with the flicker on 4K 24fps and 100M on my Sony a6400. I turned the brightness of my strip light up all the way and it got rid of the flicker.

Anthony! Appreciate the feedback and glad it could help! Does the GH4 have unique shutter speeds like the GH5? I know you can dial in the shutter way more than say the sony systems!
@@ImJasonAnthony Thanks for the reply man. Honestly I'm not sure how much I can dial things in. My use for the camera hasn't been anything to involved. I know that the GH4 is still a strong workhorse and can do a lot compared to many other cameras out there but I just haven't had the need to dig into it to much. Currently I have it connected to a Cam Link 4k so I can record with OBS or Quick Time. I subbed to you channel to learn more so hopefully in the future I can do more with the camera. Blessings.
i have a question, PAL or NTSC? does it matter in the quality of the video it self? and does flicker has to do with the choice of PAL or NTSC format? thanks.
Flicker usually is caused by lights and its frequency. Normally lights manufactured in europe vs the US have different frequencies so you notice flicker with various frame rates.
If i record a slow motion video and i notice flickering . okay i will reduce my frame rate . but it will not be slow motion then how should i fix it ???
Shot a concert recently and was seeing a horizontal white bar go from the bottom of the frame to the top of the frame, any idea why? It was every time a light flashed I believe. Had the same trouble at a wedding when the photographer took a picture and all her lights flashed at once.
so really bad light flicker/banding could be due to buying cheap led lights online? because im practicing for shooting for EDM Djs (dark, lots of led, random flashing lights) in my room and trust me I've tried it all but still have some banding. so after watching this vid, you mentioned venues could have better LEDs that don't cause so much banding. just pretty much confirming i'm not going crazy lol
I still see flickering when using LED lights, even though I dropped to 30 fps and shutter speed (In U.S.). Frustrating because I thought my new LED lights would help light blue screen.

I enjoyed the video and the spinner demo! Liked. However, I found your video searching for "light flickering" as demonstrated throughout this video in the bottom left corner of the frame. The blue LED strip behind your desk on the wall is flickering the whole time. That's exactly what I want to avoid. Is that blue light a Philips Hue? Or some other brand? I've heard Hue is not supposed to flicker because they have a higher PWM frequency. I'm just trying to decide what I should buy for my space.

Sorry for being late to the party, but what LED chrismas lights in your background bokeh did you purchase? I got some yard led string lights and even at the 1/50 180 rule at 24fps i'm getting flicker. is it a certain brand of christmas light or LED light?
This is driving me bonkers. There is no "180 degree shutter rule". It's a standard, good practice, but nobody in the industry calls it that because "the 180 rule" actually is something completely unrelated to the shutter. When blocking actors or subjects you're supposed to imagine a line between the two subjects, and stay on one 180 degree side of that line, so opposing coverage will have proper eye lines between the actors. One person looking towards the left side of frame, and the other looking towards the right. This way you know to whom they are speaking. It's also why filming a scene like the big poker scene in Casino Royale was a major headache for the filmmakers. Of all the action, stunts, etc un that movie, they said that was the most complex scene to film because of all those characters, their eye lines un relation to one another, which side of the 180 line they should be for which two subjects, all so the audience effortlessly connects who is glancing at who in this tense scene. So yeah, set your shutter to 180 degrees and forget it. No need for a "rule", blocking actors is the real 180 to worry about. This madness has to stop! 😉

Techable right on! If you want some slow broll and get those smooth movements the higher the FPS the better. This will allow you to slow down the footage more compared to shooting at 50FPS and have it look more cinematic!
@@ImJasonAnthony We have to be careful about how high we go especially depending on the subject matter like extremely high action or movement. I shoot airshows (among other things) and speeds above 120 usually produce static propeller blades on many planes. If you speed this up or slow it down in post you still get ... still propellers. Usually 60fps for this is best, 120 in some instances, but by the time you hit 240 or so it's all over. There are of course many other applications of this rule. Good shooting.
Taylor its all about the frequency of the light itself, I'm not 100% sure because there's more to it than the type of bulb. It's more the power source and amps going to the bulb.
I stumbled on a hack for this issue. It worked for me but I don't know if it would work for you. set to whatever frame rate you want and then set your shutter to twice that value but shoot in shutter priority mode. if your intention is to keep the ISO low then set the upper limit to it's the lowest value (if that's what you're going for) but otherwise leave it where it is. This completely removes the flicker for me. I use a Panasonic GX85 (micro 4/3rd) I used the same settings in Manual mode and the flicker came back. I would see that the flicker goes from being 100% without the hack to about 5% after the hack... you will probably never notice it again
Hi, I have a question, I bought a Neewer 60w video light, which looks like the sokani x60. It has apparent light flickers in the video. Is it common for this type of lighting equitment? I also have the Neewer 660 LED Bi-Color Panel, and this one does not produce the flickers.
I film in a basement with fluorescent ceiling lights and I'm getting flicker. Would it benefit to change them to LED? I experimented with shutter speeds and got it pretty clean but still slightly noticeable. So I thought upgrading to LED then noticed in your video your LED lights still flicker. My video gear is a Sony A7R II and Rokinon 24mm f/1.4. Does Full Frame and Super 35 modes made a difference with light flicker?
Hi, im in the UK, If i set my sony a6300 to pal would it really help with reducing flicker or can i leave it on NTSC & just use the sutter speed and fps setting to reduce instead of changing to pal? Please help, do i have to change it or can i try settings?
I didn't try it because I don't have a polarized filter [that's why im asking]... but did you? I know that reflections are not flickerings but can it help useing a polarized filter?
It´s not a polarizing filter he is talking about, but an ND (neutral density) filter, which is used to lower the amount of light passing through the lens, so you can use slower shutter speeds f.e. in bright lighting conditions (like on sunny days) without over-exposing.
When I film in 1080p at 60 FPS, the flickering stops when my shutter speed is at 1/100, yet on 720p at 120 FPS, it never stops no matter the shutter speed.
Thats because the 120fps only has 1/240, 1/360, 1/480 etc shutter speeds available, which are still divisible by 60 htz. Your 60fps at 1/100 is recording in 50hz essentially so is not in sync with 60hz.
Hi guys! I’m new to photography and I just bought my Canon 1300D last month. Just today, I took my camera to capture some indoor photos and set it to auto mode. The kit lens came with 18-55mm lens with AF mode so I switch it to auto focus. I was using the viewfinder and every time I press the shutter button halfway, it did its usual auto focusing sound but what came after that is the flickering of the flash before the click sound of the auto focus. I switched to manual focus and it didn’t flicker then I turned on the live view, it was normal. It’s just that every time I use the viewfinder plus auto focusing, I always get this flickering flash with a buzz sound similar like those of electrical wirings. This usually happens when I take photos in dark places or in darker lightings. How do you think should I fix this? I’m worried I might have broken my DSLR.
Hi... I tried going to 1/60th for 30fps ... But the highlights got blown out . With auto shutter it was fine.. don't know how to go about it.. kept iso between 100 to 200 and WB at 5500k. And for voice over or regular one on one talk will the audio be out of sync for higher FPS.. like 60 ...
Hello hopefully you can help me. I recently bought a video camera and flickering can be seen in daylight especially when filming trees and branches. I don't notice this every time but flickering can be seen in the videos. Do you think that manually adjusting the shutter speed can help me solve the issue? Thanks
The flickering you are referring to is most likely due to a higher frame rate - no doubt. If you are on automatic mode, when you point to the sky the camera want to go into high-speed because of its limitations in aperture control - they usually stop around f16 in auto mode so the camera has to go into frame rates to avoid over-exposure. By all means go manual in these cases. Adjust your f-stop as wide as possible and then compensate with frame rates until you see what you want. Remember, when you go back to shooting in a darker situation (non-sky) then you will have to adjust again. Don't be intimidated - FPS vs Aperture becomes instinctual very fast, usually within the first 4 hours or less of shooting. Good shooting.
Reality TV is not shot at 30p, but at 60i, but I guess you will have be aware of the difference between progressive and interlaced video to know that...
