During Xbox's January 2024 Developer Direct, Outer Worlds and Fallout: New Vegas developer Obsidian Entertainment gave an in-depth look into its newest RPG Avowed. We got a glimpse of its combat, ranging from melee, magic, and even firearms, and how players can swap between loadouts on the fly. Avowed is expected to release fall 2024.

I hope they can make the combat feel more weighty. There was this old game, Dark Messiah of Might and Magic, that really nailed fantasy first person combat.

Man that Game was amazing and not enough people gave it a chance (I remember reviewers struggled with the combat and decided the game was bad). Still feels great!!

Closest AAA game I’ve seen combat wise to Dark Messiah is the Dying Light series. If someone was able to take their combat design and add it to an actual rpg in a medieval/fantasy setting we might actually have a fun gameplay loop instead of these watered down, Skyrim systems. Hard to do though; most devs talk about having to trade off between mechanics, which is why these games always have either a sprinkling of RPG elements and decent combat or heavy rpg elements and less fleshed out combat :(

The best melee combat goes to Fatshark's Vermintide and Darktide games. And another good ones are Chivalry 2 and Mordhau.

It looks like Skyrim, the same kind of "fighting the air" feeling. I hope they can make it more fluid and kinetic and this is only slowed down so people can see what is going on.

It definitely needs to be more heavy. Especially in the animations. Combat needs to feel weighty like Skyrim. Combat where enemies don't react much feels too much like an MMO for me

yeh I got that feeling. but it was the same with Hogwarts legacy. but with how you combine different spells and attacks may make it fun like in Higwarts legacy. either way it's better than anything Bethesda could do

Anyone concerned by the lack of hit feedback? No blood, no stumble or stagger animations, no wobble on enemies when hit. I'm looking forward to this game but that aspect doesn't look finished at all.

But if you want it to be more pronounced and the impacts to feel more powerful than I'd completely agree with you. '0 hit feedback' and 'no blood decal' are literally lies maybe you want to emphasise what they need to improve but you have to be genuine.

Just because there are no Guts when you cut someone doesn't make it a kids game.. there are video games that have no gore but a little blood splatter when you hit them and that is not a kids game anymore? jeez. Im worried that their focus on "choice" and fluid swapping of combat styles is going to mean that you cant get upgrades to specialize in a way that feels meaningful. And yeah, the combat looks completely weightless :( Hopefully they can fix that!

Thats my thoughts also, people want to pick a class and roleplay that role. This feels like it could be more of an immersive sim than a real rpg.

combat animations, impact, weight, and enemy AI all look pretty horrible although the weapon variety (wands & guns!) and load outs makes me very interested. I also think the NPC mouth movement/faces when they speak looks better than many other games. I’m about 60% sold on it

@@Polovene I personally think by impact are meant the following things: depending on the enemy type the enemy should stagger a bit, heavier sounds when you it something and a bit slower more realistic feeling movements which gives the the feeling of more weight (except for daggers and pistols ofc)

@@deweycheetumhowe4970 in Skyrim you have to go into your inventory or spell list and assign the items you want as favorites. Then you go into into the favorites menu to assign hotkeys to each item or spell. Only then you get to quickly switch items, and only one at a time. Prey 2017 automatically fills the selection wheel that you bring up with one button with every piece of equipment you find and every spell you add, and somehow it doesn't look convoluted. The avowed devs here say you can switch entire loadouts with the press of a button. Ui is hard and yes it is a feature to be advertised if it's great and revolutionary1.

Can't say I'm all that excited, and the corpo buzz-speak made the entire presentation seem like an informercial, but I'm at least willing to give it the benefit of the doubt until its release and reliable reviews come out. Also, ironically enough, the two presenters literally sounded as though they were chiming out "Spacer's Choice" jingles.

Yeah, I agree completely about the infomercial part. I don't know what a 'game director' is but I kind of miss the days when you would just have low-level programmers doing interviews from in front of their computers and getting excited about the game they're making. Carrie seemed pleasant but I doubt she's the sort of person to actually play any of the products she's responsible for on her down time. This clip felt like I was sitting in a boardroom somewhere reviewing a business proposal or listening to a bunch of engineers describe to a CEO why their design should be the next to go to market. Video games are supposed to be fun and exciting and this presentation was anything but.

Yep, the old obsidian, successor to the legendary Black Isle studio, is dead. They killed it. It's dead now. It's stankin. Just look at how mediocre outer wilds was. None of the original peeps are left. Its a husk now and another nail in the Microsoft gaming industry coffin.

Paradox studios holds the license so even if they game did well commercially (it did not) it would be nearly impossible to get it down ESPECIALLY with the Microsoft purchase. Paradox did say the best and most sensible way to see Tyranny make a return is as a Grand Strategy game, like Crusader Kings, Stellaris and Europa Universalis, but even that I don't know is likely

@@rateater1857 Paradox also passed on battletech 2 development somehow despite the game having incredible longevity, instead had them go with a new IP that had Jordan Weissman's studio canned where I have to imagine a battletech 2 would've done similar numbers to the first game or better given its committed audience. Company's gone downhill with success unfortunately.

Agreed, but what in all these videos makes you think they have that. A little side quest about a run away warrior with a few options to select when talking to them. I am seeing nothing to hype me on the player urgency. I am just seeing weak EoS combat and barely any RPG items.

Most of the writers that worked on Pillars of Eternity are NO LONGER working at Obsidian. People need to understand that Game Studios are just buildings, and the people working in those buildings (or access servers in those buildings from their homeoffice) are the ones who make the games we love. You need to pay attention to where the talented writers and devs are going.

The newer God of War games do this and it feels amazing in those games, really feels like your weapons are making contact. I just don’t think they’ve nailed the feeling of contact and weight to make the pausing feel right, at least in this demo. Obviously hard to tell without having played it

I really hope that wands aren't the only "bread and butter" attacks for magic (I don't know PoE that well so maybe that's how it is there), I really prefer when magic feels like magic and not using magic-flavoured guns so to speak. The usage of the world "abilities" (which implies a cooldown or some other restriction) worries me that that might be it.

If they stick to pillars tradition, there should be wands, staves, and rods for magic, and then PLENTY of different blades weapons, polearms, axes, shields, bows, crossbows, and flintlock firearms.

In PoE wands had an attack and then spells were separate. Like you have a fire wand that does 8-17 damage for when your spells are on cooldown or you dont want to waste them.

Looks like the rescoping rumors were true. All they showed was basic Obsidian RPG fundamentals. Combat looks fun, but this isn't the Obsidian Skyrim that had sold me on it. Seems like it will be Fantasy Outer Worlds. I would love to be wrong.

Sold to me as in I would have bought the game if it was Obsidian's take on Skyrim. The rumors originally were that Avowed was going to be that. Then after Microsoft bought Bethesda, we heard rumors that it was rescoped to be smaller.@@andreasheinze9685

Because the game is from Obsidian. They don't know what they are doing when it comes to 3D game engines, because they lack the talent. Its like this since Fallout NW came out, which was their best game to date. All the important people left the ship a long time ago. Gamers are just to ignorant to figure that out till now. Pillars of Eternity 1 was not a good game.

Hope it gets pushed back a year because it clearly needs it. Enemies don't react to hits at all, its like every enemy is the terminator, no reactions to any hits at all and then they either go full ragdoll or just slump when they die. Most of what was shown looks good, combat looks terrible and needs a ton of work.

Combat and AI needs definitely serious improvement but maybe that’s an older built? They also have still more than 6 months so should be enough time to polish this aspect I think

Ima be honest, im not a fan of the colorful, disney look. The gameplay and the serious tone of the lore of this world does not mix well with the visual making the game seem like a fairy tale world in a childs story book. I imagine if new vegas had this look, it would not be the same game.

Dragon's Dogma 2 will be more focused on combat. This game will be focused more on storytelling and roleplaying. Both of them will scratch a different itch. I don't know why people always act like combat is the only thing that matters in a video game.

They said The Coalition has helped Obsidian upgrade Avowed to Unreal Engine 5.3 since this trailer. And Avowed said they are working on the melee combat , so relax. We will see it in two weeks at Xbox showcase and finally get a launch date.

There is just no weight to any of the attacks, meaning that the melee combat end up looking very flat, I mean even the guns don’t seem to have any recoil

Not only that. Look at the enemies - it takes 2-3 seconds for them to attack once. Very weird design decision, especialy when they actively promote that "loadout swap" feature.

Well it looks definitely a 1000 times better than Starfield that’s for sure! Also I like the world building so far and the hair (something way to many do wrong) look quite solid aswell as the greatly detailed skin. Sorry but you won’t be able to argue with that.

Elden Ring is a glorified action adventure. I love Elden Ring don't get me wrong but it doesn't scratch that roleplaying itch.

This kind of makes me sad because I loved PoE2 TB. And I feel like if they'd have known BG3 was going to be this big of a hit, PoE3 would have been the perfect follow up to the CRPG renaissance... I really don't know how I feel about Avowed from what I've seen.

This honestly looks incredible. The combat may not be stellar but is getting way more vitriol bombed than it needs be. There is clearly decent animation and audio-visual feedback at points like 1:54. Honestly the toxic overreaction is clearly due to this being by Obsidian, Bethesda's modern day adversary - who have come out swinging (pun intended) in teaching Broken Bethesda how to make games that just ,, _work._ Great stuff! 👍💯

The dialog sequences with the NPCs looking off to the side feels weird. In fact, any video that does the solo speaker talking off to the side as if they're talking to someone else is weird. We know there's just one person and they're speaking to the camera, so look at it.

i loved the pillars of eternity games but this game just looks exactly like outer worlds to me, just a different setting. the stiff gameplay looks especially rough but if its at least challenging unlike outer worlds its not the end of the world i guess

@@hankskorpio5857 ...with AAA graphics. Can't omit that part. Unfortunately the stiff enemies or lack of feedback in combat, not sure how to put it, drag everything down. I ended up enjoying the scenery shots at the end more than the rest of the video, and usually that kind of "B roll" footage annoys me because I want to see GAMEPLAY. Here I see the gameplay and I get so bored with enemies that stand around and die to puny zaps from a magic wand that I end up celebrating "B roll" for lacking any obvious flaws.

The graphics have improved a lot since the last trailer. It's starting to look like a 9th gen title. The world and creature design is pretty cool as well! Good job with a lot of things. But two things I have to complain about: 1. Combat: Enemies stand around too much, don't react enough to your attacks, don't seem aggressive enough. Everybody is pointing out the lack of hit feedback and I agree that it's the top priority to fix. But look deeper as well. Don't settle for kinda sorta industry standard NPCs that stand around a lot in the middle of combat. 2. Image quality: Even in heavily compressed video footage I can see NOISE and ALIASING any time the camera moves to reveal objects that were previously hidden behind something else ("disocclusion" in graphics terms). This implies that the TAA (or TSSAA?) is tasked with way too much heavy lifting by effects that depend on it. Please stop doing this. Please stop making every game noisy and then using blur to hide the noise. These image quality corners should no longer be cut in the 2020s. You don't have to pretend to render 4K on a PS4 Pro any more!

Things I absolutely liked in this Avowed gameplay video: Visuals : It looks simply amazing, handcrafted, artistic. Sounds : All music clips really feels magical. Not fully big open world : aren't you tired of playing big open world games ? This game has open zones with varied vegetations and environments and that's what makes it unique from other so called big open world games. Make the combat better and impactful and this game will be great and more fun.

The combat and art design both seem very underwhelming and somewhat generic compared to other contemporaries like Elden Ring and Dragon's Dogma, and the dialogue and lore don't seem interesting or well crafted enough to enable the game to stand out on it's own.

Pretty much agree that combat definitely needs some work. The animations seem very jittery. Also, it looks like the blood is coming from the sword instead of the enemy, if that makes any sense.

I agree with the people saying that there's a lack of responsiveness feedback for combat. But I want to appreciate that I as the player will have a multitude of different game mechanics that meaningfully change combat that I can easily switch to in combat. Like I get that animation wise yeah the combat doesn't look great but the combat obviously has good core mechanics. Enemies have telegraphed attack patterns and clearly some sort of "parry" mechanic in their attack animations 1:42. The ability to quickly change and combo various fighting styles together is amazing for this genre of game and adds a lot of needed depth to combat.

Looks so cartoonish and weird for a fantasy artstyle. The reveal looked like an 80s dark fantasy and now it just looks like outer worlds with swords and magic and like no castles or highlands/swamplands type stuff. Absolutely no gore or feedback with your attacks and it kinda looks like we happy few with the way corpses lay. Npcs just sit there waiting for you yo attack them. Idk man it just does not seem like what they advertised or offered originally and it is no way in any shape or form an obsidian Skyrim like they said it’d be

I’m really digging this game. When they first showed it I know a lot of people were excited for the dark fantasy prototype they showed, but we’ve gotten so much of that already. These environments look interesting and fun. I’m excited to give it a shot, and hopefully they can pull off the combat as that is what will separate it from the rest of the crowd.

The first person cam seems off. Where is the position of the cam? In the chest of the character? I also think the impact of the attacks isn't that believable and satisfying. I am looking forward to it, because of it's world, but the ego perspective isn't my cup of tea yet.
