I liked the look of this radio when I bid on it at the radio club auction. Because it came from a club member I suspect it has been worked on already. Let's see if I can improve on it.

Wow 1958, man that takes me back, when I was 7 years old, it was before my announcement that "I see trains!" You see, my dad was an old Swede, he grew up in a broken family his mom dying when he was 7 years old from a fall as she ascended the long staircase that lead from the street level to the maternity ward in the old Hospital back in 1918. He was sent to live with his paternal uncle who abused the hell out of him with a horse whip for the smallest infraction. Now dad didn't use a horse whip, but chose the much more readily available razor strop to knock the dust from my trousers when I made an infraction of the rules he put down for the farm. I have always had this thing, you see when I close my eyes, I can see, well square spots, I don't know if everyone has this illusion, or if it is just me, but I always associated them with passing passenger trains at night, things I used to see as we traveled home from the city at night. So one day, I did something wrong, I don't recall what it was, but dad dusted the hell out of my trousers, and as mom was trying to get me to quiet down, lest I receive another few lashes for good measure, I blurted out "I see trains!" I never knew the effect it had till a few years ago, when visiting mom at the nursing home where she now resides. I mentioned the trains, and she began to laugh a bit. She said that when I said that so many years ago, back when that radio was new I said that and it frightened dad, he thought he had beat me to hard and that I suffered some sort of brain damage! Well the beatings became fewer and stopped completely soon after that. I can recall only one after that and I deserved the hell out of that one, having broken one of my toy pistols over my sisters head, something I saw on a western movie at the theatre some days before the incident. Now dad still had the razor strop hanging in the entry way of our farm house, right next to the '03 bayonet he used to "stick" hogs when it was butcher time, but instead he decided to use a wooden lath, which he applied liberally to my neither region with great gusto and accuracy. As I said, it was my last ass beating, and after that the mere threat of the strop got me in line. Oh the things we saw and the things we did when we were children, todays kids would be calling Child Services and our folks would be spending time in Jail for such going's on, yet back then it was quite acceptable. Spare the rod and spoil the child was the way of life for us back then. Maybe a bit of that could help us out today to get our folks back in the straight and true path. After all, no bones were broken, no blood was drawn, an lessons remained with us some 50 years later, so it must have done some good. Perhaps that was what lead me to become a peace officer? Who knows, maybe it was the western movies....

Dave, no apologies, please sir-this is gold. Keep it up. The morphing between the old and new tone knob was unreal. That is some tight and thoughtful production! Can I just add, you're not actively monetising this I know, it is a hobby, but IF you ever decided to set up a Patreon, I would support you.

It’s about time RU-vid came to the realization that people don’t care for the adds and perhaps never buy from the advertisers. Personally I skip as quickly as I can when they show up. But I’m prepared to suffer through some as it does offer some funds to the video producers of which I’m grateful for their time and expenses. Knowledge is priceless and that’s what I’m here to gain. Thanks for the videos.
@DavidTipton101
@DavidTipton101 2 года назад
Hi John, you should only get three ads, one at the start, one in the middle and one at the end, all skipable. If you are getting more than that please let me know. I check from time to time with a non signed in phone to ensure no other ads are inserted. Thanks John 😊
@richardshort4587

@@DavidTipton101 Thanks David for the reply. I’m ok with the adds, yes they can be annoying at times, but you’re knowledge is what I’m here for, and if I have to watch adds I’m happy. All in all they can be skipped after a few seconds, so no worries. I’ll forgive you for calling me John. 😂😂 Have a great bud and God bless you and you’re family mate. 👍🍻

I'm not bothered by the commercials in your videos at all. RU-vid is busy with an ad offensive anyway. And if you can make a few bucks for all the trouble you have making these video's then that's perfectly fine with me. And don't worry that there's not enough technical difficulty in this video. That is not the only reason that your videos are so enjoyable to watch. The way you make them, the humor and your comments are equally important! 👍

It's interesting where we're headed now with our viewing habits. I personally haven't watched any free to air television since my wife passed away nearly 12 years ago. I just found that the news and current affairs which once interested me in my professional role just added to the negativity that I didn't need any more after her passing. I believe free to air television advertising revenue is now an issue and that's why their content is in my opinion not what it use to be. Platforms like You Tube know this and it is obviously a cash cow for them. What ever input that you have in how many adds are shown I don't know, but personally I'm happy to watch your channel over F.T.A TV whatever the adds may be.Thank you David for your content and sharing your wisdom with us.
@DavidTipton101
@DavidTipton101 3 года назад
Hi Graham, thank you. Google provides the platform for people to share their videos and that generates an income for Google and without it the platform wouldn't exist so I get that but the number of ads was excessive so I will trim them back so everybody can benefit. I pre-record TV shows and skip through the ads for the small amount of TV I watch 🙂

I am so sorry that some are disappointed because of the ads. You can click through them very quickly if you wish. It is not hard to do and it is a small price to pay for your excellent video content. If the ads help you with your expenses for your videos so be it. Your content has helped many times through a long night. I am retired and disabled. Due to am illness that has required over 50 surgeries over many years I spend a lot of nights awake. I get an education from some of the better video content that is on different channels. Yours is one of them. Keep up the excellent standard of work that you do. Just my 2 cents worth. Aloha from the Island of Maui

Hi Randy, I don't blame anyone for suggesting too many ads in the videos, a 40 minute video with 7 or so ads is ridiculous, I would be complaining too 🙂 I'm sorry to hear of your situation but happy that my videos help, I would think my videos would put anyone to sleep. Thanks Randy and have a wonderful Xmas in Maui, Aloha 😀

Yes David I too never started you tube videos for making money. I did them because my grand daughter liked to see her Grandpa on You tube. As you can see on my channel I only have 581 subscribers and have made 804 videos over the last 4 years and my channel started in 2009 so as you can see it was never about the money I applaud you for doing the same. That is a beautiful looking radio I have never seen one like it before.

Hi LuckyLarry. I didn't mind making a little back to help cover running costs but when it intrudes on the viewer experience like it did that is too much. You are a pioneer on RU-vid... 2009! well done. I trust your granddaughter still watches Grandpa on the videos although she would be in her teens now with better things to do I guess. Have a safe and happy holiday season 🙂

The number of advertisements also depends on the viewer's profile. I hadn't noticed. I had a good laugh at the rabbithole. We all have been there, Dave 😊 It was an interesting video, even when you think different of it. So as Crocodile Dundee would say to the porter "no worries mate" Cheers 🤝
@DavidTipton101
@DavidTipton101 3 года назад
Hi Nard, the number of ads is listed in my YT dashboard as shown in the video clip. I don't see any ads in videos because I have a premium account... I don't know if it would change depending on who was watching but who knows with Google. Google's ad algorithm might be another rabbit hole 😄 Thanks Nard 👍🙂

I loved the look of that old silver radio, there was something "homey" about it, even though I have never seen a dial quite like that here in the USA the set overall was just, well nice to look at, very 60's if you will, and of course growing up in the 60's I guess that's why it appeals to much to me. Thanks for the video, I do love to see you take such care in restoring these old sets.

No need to apologize for anything David i learn something every time i watch one of your videos. This time i also leaned something about You Tube, before watching i assumed the number of ads shown during a video were regulated by You Tube, i didn't know the author could reduce their numbers. It's a nice gesture for your audience and i thank you for taking the time to fix the issue for our enjoyment. Now about this particular radio, granted you might have had less work than usual to put into it, but it doesn't change the fact i got to see the guts of a machine i will never come across in my life. This video ranks right up there with the other ones as one of my guilty pleasures as i sit and watch them with a nice cup of cappuccino :-)

@DavidTipton101 3 года назад
Hi Sarge, thank you very much. I didn't know I could adjust the number of ads either and I assumed it would be a few ads in a 40 minute video but it turned out to be at least 6 per 30 minutes. I didn't have to dig too deep into this radio but a few issues kept it interesting I guess, thanks for the feedback. All the best for the festive season 🙂

Gosh, I'm weeks behind watching your videos. With regard to the adds, I think RU-vid changed their policy a few months ago and now there are adds galore in everything. At the same time there are constant pop ups about purchasing RU-vid Premium, which I refuse to do. It's not your fault at all so don't feel bad about it. I just added an add blocker to my browser and the problem is solved. It's always good to see you showcase another fine AWA radio. 🎄✨

Thanks for making this video David! The 586MA is a very significant radio for me as it was the model that I was taught how to service valve radios on back in 1979 at the Marconi School Of Wireless. I found one on a council clean up about 20 years later, got it going again and it still works well. The top of the cabinet is in bad condition though as sometime with the previous owner/s someone left a hot iron on the top which melted through. Fortunately the only thing broken inside was the ferrite rod but the iron shaped hole it left needs the same sort of treatment you gave the Fleetwood 1061 cabinet. I have been looking for a replacement cabinet for it instead but no luck yet... Keep up the great work!! Mark.

I use the app Enhancer for RU-vid in my Firefox browser and never see the ads in the videos anymore! Shh. Our little secret. This was an interesting video. So many radios you may come across David might have similar problems so it's nice to see a professional restore done to one! Like your alignment procedure. On the American Emerson radio. All of them seem to have at least one poor working tube in them . The radio was played until it didn't and then the owner went out and got one of those fancy new transistorized radios. Luckily he didn't throw these out! Many people did! Steve

@DavidTipton101 3 года назад
Hi Steve, Thanks, another ad removal tool, it may help someone. Haha... I probably wouldn't put me, radio and professional in the same sentence but I'm learning fast. I wasn't surprised when the newer good tube didn't make a noticable difference to the radios performance, that is something else I've learned. It's surprising how many radios turn up that people have stored away for so many years, bit of good luck there 😊

By dumb luck I just found this video a minute ago. Adds.. I use prime so no adds at tll. Mor comments as I watch ! Back now. I am surprised that the on/off knob is on the tone not the volume control. Cleaning the chassis, short of a total disassembly there isn't much more to do. Mr Carlson did a video where he rebuilt a tone generator and the chassis was a mess. He just drilled out the rivets for the sockets and removed any wires tying the "guts" to the chassis and lifted out the internals as a whole unit, this was pretty slick and when he put it back everything just fell into place. That is a bit much to do for this radio and just stopping the rust was a good call. You managed to improve the tuning quite a bit though it looked to be fairly close to start with. Even not needing a recap, you improved it a lot, good work! The pilot light on the other radio did look a bit odd in the last video. I have never seen a pilot light on any commercial frequency radio and as a later mod, makes sense. "New" old equipment, your VTVM, nice :D I bought a H.P. signal generator just last week. New to me but from the mid 70s to late 80s. it was one of those "was working when I put it into storage" LOL ya well as you can guess, it has a "few" issues LOL With Christmas and all, I won't have a chance to even open it up until after new years. it was nice to see your video. As always I would be happy to own anything you have worked on. If only those station markings would have anything relevant at all with stations here :P
@DavidTipton101
@DavidTipton101 3 года назад
Hi Wayne. I have a RU-vid Premium account and don't see the ads either, that's why I was oblivious to the number shown in a video. I did a 1931 radio 12 months ago with a rusted chassis and was able to remove most of the wiring in one piece as did Mr Carlson. I wasn't sure about the pilot light initially but I'm sure it was added later. The switch on the tone control is not unusual for Aussie radios of that time, it does mean that the volume is set where you left it last time. Good luck with your HP generator, they are pretty good 👍 Our station marking make perfect sense to me 😄... cheers 🙂

I have to begin by saying David, that AWA radio is a very nice looking radio. In some ways it looks familiar. I’ve a feeling I might have seen that model before. If AWA produced that radio with a maroon plastic cabinet, then it is very likely I’ve seen two, on different occasions come up at BVWS auctions. Being Australian, bidding was, as I remember, fairly high for an early 1960s plastic cabinet radio. Normally 1960s plastic cabinet radios are generally inexpensive. The reason I seem to remember this model of radio is that I like foreign radio, and was outbid at one of the auctions. Foreign radios usually offer something different, often in the form of being a refreshing break from the usual British types ...I was a telly and audio repair man for almost forty years, so I saw a lot of British, as well as Hong Kong, and Japanese stuff LOL! Having misplaced the memory card for almost two weeks I’d used for filming the two Philco, model 48-420 ‘Hippo’ American radios, I found it, and resumed shooting material for my restoration series videos. Part 1 was uploaded to RU-vid earlier today. Part2 will be uploaded tomorrow. Cheers my friend, Phil.

Hi Phil, I looked up the colours the radio was available in and maroon wasn't one of them but it also didn't list my grey colour either. Dave, 5 seconds of an ad is a small price to pay to see your great repair videos! You can disconnect the speaker, hook your vtvm probes to the output transformer & , if you keep your radio volume low, you will get a much more sensitive result. Keep the modulation & rf levels low too. I saw this on a Mr. Carlson video.

Damn that AWA Radio has a really good tone to it.. APU I dropped a like.. BTW.. I don t mind adverts as long as they are a maximum of 20 seconds " if there are two adverts per intrusion I can Tolerate 30 seconds max" BUT as long as there are no more than three add intrusions per hour, My policy is to unsubscribe from channels if there is a lot of long intrusive interruptions, and don't get me started when the intrusion spoils the moment, because I unsubscribed from Foxtel & stopped watching Free TV because of that, now all I watch is RU-vid and Netflix. I mean who wants to waste away over an hour and a half just to watch a 20 minute Video, And what's more via Foxtel pay for what essentially is advertising, that's right... Foxtel's Subscribers are actually PAYING for the production of advertising!!!..

Excellent video, thank you for uploading! Bit late from my side, but on the AWA, it often helps a lot to recalibrate the ferrite bar by carefully heating wax with hairdryer and repositioning coils for best reception after recap. Re rust spots: do you have a small dremel tool and wire brush attachment to buff out these blemishes? With the duff valves and the tester: Most testers run the small signal diodes and some triodes with a minimum current which is too high (it has to deflect the instrument somehow). As soon as the valves have some hours on them the emission decreases somewhat, but because in the circuits they are in there is no current flowing, this issue is irrelevant and often stated so in the instruction manuals of the testers. Old valves (even NIB) can go "sleepy", to wake them up they can be heated at 150% filament voltage for 5 mins, then heat at 100% for 30 mins, repeat 5 mins at 150%. (no anode voltage) and only then apply highest permissible anode voltage for a few mins. Helps in a lot of cases. Cheers from Germany
@DavidTipton101
@DavidTipton101 3 года назад
HI Blitz, thank you. I could have heated the coils but it was like that at the factory so I had no reason to suspect it was less than peaked but worth think about in future. I do have a Dremel with a wire brush but this rust was too deep so I scrapped it off and treated it. I have a mini sand blaster too, I should have tried that perhaps. It looked like a mammal had lived in there for a bit and caused the rust spots. Good info on the tester, I will keep that in mind, thanks. I have heard that about getting valves to 'wake up' as you say, I will keep your advice on the method. Cheers 👍😀

David, Good to see another video from you! This is a nice set. From the beginning of the video, I felt sure that it was in good shape and probably had been worked on...which it had. I'm glad that it didn't need any more work than it did...shows that it had been taken care of by the previous owner(s). The layout of this one is a bit strange though. That is one very attractively designed radio; definitely a late '50s, early '60s design, just think about how many breakfasts, lunches, and dinners took place within earshot of this fine radio. I imagine that by now, Australia and New Zealand has received the news that the US-FDA approved the "Pfizer-BioNTech Vaccine" as being "generally safe, well tolerated, and almost 95% effective". Hopefully, the world will notice, that we can make our lives "better by leaps and bounds", if we only would work together. We need to get on with our living, and not become consumed by watching far too many die, from a disease likely caused by a country whose given us nothing but wholesale unsolicited grief. As far as the adverts go, like wayne parris, below, watching a ten minute video would often take more than double the time listed as the video's length. The truth is, that my heart will most likely give out by Easter. I derive pleasure and relaxation from these videos, and I literally don't have the time to watch videos which are often from questionable advertisers; some going so far as to tell bullshit stories of "how the product came to market, only because an honest design engineer combined his talents with an honest "necktie" administrator. These advertisers mock our intelligence, and I'm certain that many would try to sell horse sh*t to an Amishman on Sunday. Cheers, David, for a fine job!
