Erres radio? I had never heard of them. This one was brought to Australia by a Dutch migrant. It is complete but in rather poor condition. The cabinet finish is the worst I've seen, it will have to be stripped back. Once complete it turned out to be one of the best finishes I have done. Please follow along as I bring the beauty back to this old girl. This may be the only example of this model radio in Australia.

Mate, you turned an ugly duckling into a very nice looking unit. That grill cloth is just beautiful. I always love watching your cabinet restorations. And it seems lots of other RU-vidrs are talking about your cabinet work as well. Both Electronics Old and New and Buzz1151 have mentioned your work on a few occasions. It means you are now the World Renowned Radio Restorer

I love all the ones I watch. Dave and Buzz are my favourites because of the humour content. Perhaps Dave believes like I do that there is no such thing as a Museum Piece. What's the point of restoration if not for using it regularly as intended.

Another sow's ear into a silk purse, David, a fantastic restoration! Had no idea they made radios like that. Ms Corrien Maas is a great find for radio restorers. She made a grille cloth for my Grundig 2030W/3D that might as well be New Old Stock. She'd never seen it before and it didn't exist anywhere online so I sent her a piece of my original cloth and she hand wove a perfect copy. She's a real pro at that and as far as I know is the only person in the world who does such work. Happy New Year, Dave! I hope 2024 is a good year for you and yours! The world could sure use a good year as the last 8 have been terrible...

What a joy this was ! I was glued to the screen and it brought back memories, stored in the cells of my hands. I had the same speaker, transformer etc. When I was a little explorer, I got quite a few shocks from the transformer. I used it, uncovered, to power my 6V "drill", made up from a bicycle dynamo. Voyage to the bottom of the sea. My double bed was the submarine and I did quite some exploring under the bed. Which was a cave of course. 🤨 A child's mind 😊 Those huge nuts and bolts : kacheldraad it is called in Dutch. Used on f.i. the heating stove (kachel in Dutch) in the living room. Cheers Nard

The transformation of this ugly duckling is simply amazing. It’s such a pleasure to watch. Thanks David. By the way, after watching your videos for a year or two I have almost gained the confidence to try my hand at refinishing some of my wooden radios. I typically only do the plastic and Bakelite radios because I’ve never been good at wood working. Maybe I’ll give it a go sometime soon. I recently purchased 3 radios at auction, all from the 1930’s.

As always, an excellent job. You really go above and beyond the call of duty in your restorations. I endeavor to work more like you every day, so thanks for the continued inspiration, not to mention the great entertainment. As an aside, the styling of that radio is definitely in the 'homely' category. Were it not for the uniqueness of the pop-up tuning dial, I think it would've been scrapped years ago. Still, you managed to transform it into a real head-turner.

To be honest I was kind of ashamed that that ugly thing came from our country but once you got that new cloth on there I saw its true potential. In a way it almost looks art deco, with its simplistic straight lines, which the cloth adds to. Truly beautiful result David, this one is getting into my youtube favourite list.

Philips had a lot of "shadow" brands like Erres, Aristona and Dux which were all basically just stickers that they put on Philips produced equipment. They were usually much cheaper than the original Philips version of the products. That said, I have to say I've never seen anything like this radio from Philips. So maybe in the early days Erres made their own radios or maybe this was made before Philips bought them...
@DavidTipton101
@DavidTipton101 6 месяцев назад
Thanks Jac. According to what I've read Philips wasn't part of the Erres brand when this radio was made. There is a lot of Philips components in there though 🤔🙂

Fantastic work as always! I wonder how the factory got the grill cloth pattern perfect for however many thousands of radios they made? Surely they didn't spend hours on every radio getting it perfect. Maybe they had a jig that they could adjust the pattern's alignment before fixing to the cabinet? Maybe they just did it by hand/eye, and with practice the worker could install the cloth with good alignment in a minute?
@DavidTipton101

Thanks linuspoindexter. I know, they would be applying fabric perfectly many times a day. I don't know how they did it 🙂

This just shows how something that looks really bad can be restored back to it's original look if you only put a lot of talent and work into it. I guess Philips was not only involved on the parts inn the radio but also on the design as this looks alot like other Philips sets from that time. With the dial glas on the top and big speaker in the front.

@DavidTipton101 6 месяцев назад
Hi Geir, thank you. It difficult to say how much input Philips had in the design at the period. It had a lot of Philips parts in it though 🙂

Hi Dave, First and foremost, Happy New Year to you and your family. Like you, I too had never heard of the ‘Herres’ brand. The Philips brand was sold exclusively through approved dealerships at premium prices. Here in the UK, for example, there was the ‘Stella’ brand, which incorporated Philips chassis, sometimes of lower spec’ housed inside budget-end cabinets, and sold though department stores, wholesalers, and electrical outlets. Then there was the Mullard brand of radio and television, incorporating higher spec’ Philips chassis housed inside highly polished cabinets. It is possible that Herre was another one of Philips more higher spec’ brands. When you first presented this radio, it kind of had an ‘ugly duckling’ look about it. It certainly no longer has that look about it now. Definitely a huge transformation back to how it once looked over eighty years ago. A good set of valves installed; quick alignment, and it will effectively be as good as a ‘new radio’. Regards, Phil.

Erres (which stood for R.S. Stokvis, Errres is how you pronounce the letters R and S in Dutch) was a designer and distributor of radios made by several manufacturers. Eventually Philips purchased the rights to the name Erres and it became one of the numerous Philips brands in the 1970s. Philips usually did two designs of each model, one sold as Philips and another - usually more conservative - one under all the other brand names like Radiola, Aristona and Erres. This radio was manufactured by Van der Heem, an old Dutch radio manufacturer that had an on and off relationship with Philips since about 1930. Trivia: stokvis means stock fish, I fear other kids made fun of the founder of this company when he was a schoolboy!

Hi Phil, happy new year to you. Erres was part owned by Philips at times but when this Erres was made they were not owned by Philips but Philips clearly supplied components to them. Yes it was an ugly duckling but I could see the potential in it and it was so unusual as well. It exceeded my expectations, the cabinet was in such good condition under the original finish it responded well to restoration. I will admit, I love running my fingers over the finish and popping the dial up 😄 When I get the new valves I will align it, it deserves it. Thanks Phil 🙂
