AWAKE' 🛌💤😪 is a short film by Shift.ms that explores the interplay between #MultipleSclerosis, sleep and mental health. It is an experimental documentary film that unfolds over one night. Voices from real late-night phone calls are woven together to reflect on life and death from the unique perspective of those experiencing both insomnia and a neurological disease.
Lack of sleep can have a serious impact on people living with MS. Insomnia can heighten symptoms and have a negative impact on MSers quality of life 🛌💤😪 Shift.ms research found that 85% of MSers experience insomnia and 75% of these MSers believe that it has some impact on their mental health and wellbeing.
Do you experience insomnia? What goes through your mind when you're lying awake in bed? Do you have any tips for coping with sleeplessness? @@Shiftms I don't have anything that has worked other than medication for insomnia. I still have to wash out on the medication because the body builds up a tolerance. I've tried a sleep therapist, who recorded his voice to listen to,lying in the dark, reading before sleep.

Thank you for your work on this film. My only complaint, as this is often the case, there are no comments from the MSers that are living with chronic pain. Your whole body is racked with pain, always. Trying to sleep when you feel you are laying on a rack is next to impossible and you feel so lucky if you get 2 hours of sleep/night. It's difficult especially because sleep is the most restorotive thing you can do for am aching, disabled body. When sleep eludes you, all you can do is tuck it away and hope you find it again the next night. MS pain is real.

@@tinalonefeather453 Thank you for responding. It's so great to know that I'm not alone, albeit I wouldn't wish this on my worse enemy; I am incredibly grateful to you for "getting it". Thanks again and I hope you get through this difficult time unscathed. 🎗️

Thank you for making this video. It’s 3.22am as I type and I’ve only made it to my bed twice in 11 days. I sit here and as each new day arrives and the sun rises, I resent it. I want it to stay darker for longer. I’ve suffered with insomnia my entire life. It’s actually one of my very first memories. You feel like you’re losing your mind and that you need to be locked up. This morning I read an entire book in 3 hours. My life revolves around my sleep. Mostly being stressed out because I don’t have it. I should go into bed but I don’t want to. Ironically I’m exhausted due to the fact that I can’t sleep. Again, thank you for this video. A tiny part of me doesn’t feel so alone.

Such a unique way of exploring this issue. I think everyone experiences insomnia at some point in their lives, perhaps only for one night, but its something we can all relate to. Very powerful.

watching this video and seeing these people I can relate to all those people I never knew i had insomnia until I've watched this. but the thing is I dont have the help around me or anyone who understand, so am dealing with this situation on my own. so this video helped alot and gave me the knowledge on what I have to deal with in the future

Thanks for your comment mohibur - I'm glad this video has helped you. In a recent survey we did we asked our members what tips or techniques they have for coping with insomnia. There were many that came back with meditation, no caffeine, no screens before bed, sticking to a routine. Calm was also mentioned - it could be worth trying these out 🙂

MS-patients are in general low on Melatonin and likely on other hormones as well (I was). In my case I am convinced my PPMS is a neuroendocrine imbalance at core. I take Melatonin to fall asleep every day all year around since a year or so, and finally sleep well again. If nothing else it improves the quality of sleep and is a great antioxidant for the brain.

On the topic of marijuana: I'm from a weed-smoking culture so getting some wasn't difficult, but my experience of it seems to be different from the norm: most people that I know have a smoke and then fall asleep easily, but not me. It's difficult to articulate but it's like every part of my brain is sparking off fireworks and every thought that I could possibly have tried to happen all at once and I can't keep up. It's exhausting but having any complex ideas after years of cog fog feels like a revelation... definitely doesn't help me sleep, though.

I have an insomnia phase again and I wrote and recorded a song about how I feel. It will never be made public though because I used some snippets for a sound collage, so I am the only one listening to it, hahaha. But it was necessary to express all these emotions. Thanks for your question Jathusan. No sleep for three weeks would make you incredibly tired but a person can be so so tired and not able to sleep because they live with insomnia. It can be incredibly frustrating.

Unfortunately not, no. Its like you can be yawning your head off, so incredibly tired but you just cannot physically fall asleep, no matter what you do. You just lay there, so angry and frustrated.
