I FINALLY got my Awara yesterday and the first thing I noticed was how damaged the box was. Then I saw "MADE IN CHINA" on the mattress itself. If I had known that, I would not have bought it in the first place.

This is a good example of why we always recommend that people watch or read our review of a product before buying it, in order to avoid such surprises. We know that information like this can often be buried on manufacturer websites. And sadly most other "reviews" you'll find are from people who lack the expertise or motivation to cover details like this, especially when they are details that might dissuade some people from purchasing that product. On the flip side, being made in China is also one of the reasons the Awara is such a good value. Strictly on a materials vs price basis, you are getting a lot of premium-quality latex and a number of certified organic materials. Since people shopping for a natural mattress likely care about "natural" claims, you should really note that this mattress is mostly polyester, not organic cotton. And they have no organic certifications when you ask. They do have logos and descriptions of certifications on their website, but none for their actual materials and products that they sell. Plus they also use glue and make the bed in China, which does matter when you are considering the health and the environmental impact.

Yes, you are correct that while some of the key raw materials in this mattress are certified organic (eg, the latex, the cotton used in the cover), the entire mattress is not organic. As we explained in the video, to be a certified organic mattress, they would not be able to use polyester in the cover, glues to hold the mattress together, etc. You are also correct that the mattress is made in China. Not sure if you watched the full video, but we did make sure to explain all of this clearly in our video -- mostly in the Natural Materials section at 17:22 and the Value section at 29:17. The review says the cover is organic cotton. It might be, But only the 35% of the cover that is made of cotton. The rest is actually polyester. And the sides are up to 100% polyester. Now they say the cover "uses" cotton, as I would guues they have gotten a lot of returns. As for organic latex, it also might be, but it says right on the product page "GOLS-Certified organic OR Rainforest Alliance-Certified Dunlop." Which means you really have no idea.

Just to clarify, this review does NOT say that the cover "is" organic cotton -- it says that there is certified organic cotton "in" this cover (3:33), which is true. But of course we go much deeper than that -- for anyone that has particular interest or concern about the use of natural materials, we provide an entire section about this (linked directly from the description of the video -- it starts at 17:22) in which we specifically talk about the polyester in the cover, as well as other materials that would disqualify this from being considered an "organic mattress" overall. As for the latex being "Rainforest Alliance-Certified" rather than GOLS-certified, that is definitely a change from when we reviewed this mattress -- and a pretty big one IMHO. We were not aware of this change so will certainly be updating our written review accordingly, as well as adding a note to the description of this video to flag this for people. Thank you very much for making us aware of this.
@@goodbed I just contacted a representative and they said that within the past mont they have moved their assembly of the mattresses to the USA - PA and CA specifically. Hopefully that's a step in the right direction for those who are interested in more local manufacturing.
I bought this mattress and find it to be very uncomfortable. It hurts my shoulders and hips. It has a hammock effect under my hips. Added a bed topper to this bed also latex and still uncomfortable. The edge is actually where it is most comfortable as less pressure on hips . Has a odd support for me. Already showing signs of a dip in bed and only had a month! Trying for a refund so I can get another bed. Not a easy process. There’s are questions to be answered, pictures taken of bed and labels on mattress (which if removed would void all warranties), then you are charged with donating to a charity and having them sign forms or if not able to donate turn into a landfill area and certified you did so. Then wait for refund while you have no bed. The company ask if I wanted a new bed or if they could give me a bed topper but we just soured on this online bed in a box experience and will be wanting a in person testing from now on. I find your reviews very good at explaining things about mattresses as in materials but comfort is varied by person so hard to access unless your the one trying it. Still appreciate your reviews but still trying to find my comfortable bed.

I just purchased this bed in the queen size a week ago. I am a stomach sleeper and have been sleeping better than I was on my older tuft and needle foam mattress. One complaint so far is the smell of the organic top cover. I put a protector on and sheet layer and literally can smell it on my shirt that I slept in. I can still sleep ok with it but would prefer more of a neutral odor. Overall the fit and function for my sleeping style and weight has been excellent. 6' 2" 230.

As always, I appreciate your thorough reviews. If you would indulge me with a few questions I have. I'm just begun looking for a mattress. My vitals: 6'/197 lbs side/back sleeper (fall asleep on side, wake on back) have allergies/mild sleep apnea do not like sinking-in feeling want a long lasting mattress budget in the $1,600+/- I'm concerned with chemicals, off gassing due to my allergies. Looking for suggestions as to type of mattresses to look at? Would an all latex like the Zenhaven or Plush Beds compare favorably to the Awara, pillow top Birch or pillow top Avocado? These are just a few I've come across, I'm open to any other input you may have. Thanks again for a great site.

@@jeffrezzuto8242 For someone of your size and weight (which is almost identical to Mike, our tester), generally speaking there isn't much of a difference support wise between an all-latex mattress and a latex hybrid. This might be different for people with higher BMI though. Coils come in differing softness levels but in general they provide the opportunity for a firmer underlying support layer than latex can offer as a support material. A heavier person might need this in order to prevent their hips from going too far into the mattress -- especially if they are a stomach sleeper. In your case, the main difference in the feel is going to be the amount of "deep bounce" (which we explain in our Responsiveness section at 9:24) -- a latex hybrid will generally have more deep bounce than an all-latex mattress. Hi. Thanks for the comment. We do note when coil gauge is something out of the ordinary. But to imply that coil gauge alone determines comfort or durability would be misleading. Furthermore, the number of working turns, the tempering process, and the coil count also contribute to a coil unit's quality. So knowing the coil gauge alone simply would not be enough (as you can see, you can really go off the deep end). In our view, foam densities and quality of construction can give us a clue as to mattress longevity, but even then are never a guarantee. That's why we look at the whole mattress rather than just one aspect.
Hi Hannah -- This will depend moreso on the type of latex and its softness level, but for latex mattresses that are on the firmer side, like the Awara, we agree that the pressure relief might not be adequate for some side sleepers.

You are certainly right that anything coming from a rubber tree would be considered "natural" -- however "organic" is a higher standard (and also a much more closely regulated word). Just like with other fruits and vegetables, organic rubber trees are grown without the use of chemical pesticides or genetic modifications, and are farmed and harvested in sustainable ways. i think also if you keep a certain percentage of natural material and mix it with a small amount of synthetic material you can still call it natural; however it cannot be called 100% organic
@@paulusandronicus Yes, this is a separate point but you are correct that when mattress manufacturers refer to "natural latex," this latex is typically a blend of synthetic and natural (usually somewhere between 30% and 70% natural). Although this practice is commplace, we find it very misleading for consumers, which is why on GoodBed we never use the term "natural latex." For the aforementioned blend of synthetic and natural latex, we refer to this as "natural blend latex." And for latex that comes entirely from rubber sap, we call this "all-natural latex" or "100% natural latex." To be clear though, in order to be organic (GOLS-certified), latex can not be synthetic or a natural blend -- it must be all-natural latex.
