I’ve just been diagnosed with fibromyalgia at 27, and I know diet is a huge component to treating it and I. Honestly just so overwhelmed with what I should or shouldn’t be doing. I’d kill for a doctor to just sit me down and help me make a plan as opposed to reading millions of articles with conflicting information. What you’re doing is so important!

They'll probably tell you to cut junk food. And keep a diary - do one thing at a time and keep some kind of record of how it effects you.

Fellow fibro fighter here. You are right in terms of how important it is to have a good doctor. I had a doctor who told me I'd be just fine if I lost 40 pounds and then tried to get me to opt for gastro surgery even after knowing my history of eating disorder. I left and switched to another doctor who said you just have to learn with the pain. He did actually help me find exercises that helped but I'm currently doing a course in nutrition to be able to figure it out for myself. I hope you have better luck ❤

Are you able to access a dietician? Dietary therapy is their area of expertise. I live in Canada, and our general practitioners can often refer to a dietician under the public healthcare system. Even if doctors knew more about diet, it is not a good use of healthcare resources to have them spend an hour with a single patient going over dietary details.

What Ally was saying about patient food in hospital is SO TRUE! A previous partner of mine had a fall as a result of a blackout caused by undiagnosed diabetes along with an undiagnosed heart condition, and injured his jaw to the point where he couldn't open his mouth properly. Every day I visited him, we sat together while he chose his food for the next day, trying to pick the food option that would be the easiest for him to eat. So often, the only option he could eat was the starter soup, and even then, half the time they delivered him the wrong food, so he was living off smoothies I was bringing in from outside. I would speak to the nurses on his behalf, as he was unable to do so, and the staff were not able to offer him any support with food, and I was often met with a simple shrug. How many people with jaw and mouth related issues must be starving in hospitals, the place where you go to fix that problem? How many people with allergies are starving or having severe allergic reactions from being taken the wrong food, in the place that's supposed to be making them well?

It would be a comical farce of ineptitude if it weren't people's lives at stake. I haven't had any experience with inpatient healthcare lately, and I'm in Canada, but I wouldn't expect it has changed much from 20 years ago, except for those with private healthcare who are very wealthy.

I had an unopened jar of nutella confiscated off me at Edinburgh airport going to London (only had carry on luggage). It was pancake Tuesday and i bought it for my cousin. I was very confused, but the lady explained to me that if it has ml for millilitres it is a liquid. If it has g for grams it is a solid. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I'm still annoyed about it. I told her, fine. She can eat it, but she said she had to throw it away and personally, i think throwing away chocolate is a crime! 😅 Yet...i could travel with an apple. I'm Australian and travelling with fruit here is confiscated 😂😂😂 The world is weird (and wonderful)

It’s wonderful to virtually meet this range of people who have such diverse perspectives on food, their own experience with food and how truly we are all connected by our food experiences. When you launched this series, I was thrilled but I’d assumed and expected that all the guests would be directly from the food/ hospitality industry or food influencers. But right off the bat, you guys have brought on such unexpected guests. Well done, Sorted Team for always delivering something unexpected but definitely educational! ❤❤❤

Gonna go for a bit of a story here, I hope you guys read it 😅 I’ve been out for a few drinks and my wife and kid are in bed…. I sit down to enjoy my pissed up kebab with a bit of sorted food as I drunkenly demolish what I have invested in. Suddenly I am met with conversations of garbage disposals… I look down at my by this point massacred kebab and say to myself (perfectly out loud) “fuck me I think I’m eating what they’re talking about”. I have 10 seconds of reflection before thinking… bollocks to it, in for a penny in for a pound and continuing to enjoy my absolute belter of a kebab. Much love to you lads! Keep doing you… give me a shout if there’s ever a space for one of Kush’s lunches, I’ll be there in a heartbeat and I’ll give you all a lesson in west country cider. All then best from a 10yr+ watcher ❤️

Doctors learning about Nutrition - In Canada, all healthcare workers - from doctors down to lowly health-care aides (and even para-medical people like massage therapists) have to have a basic education in nutrition and have had to do so for the last 20 years or so - it is not enough to give nutritional advice (extra training is needed for that), but is enough to give some basic pointers or talk intelligently about nutrition. I teach the nutrition class in a massage school - the students get 20 hours of nutrition, which is far more than what a lot of doctors did in the past before this was implemented. I feel that it is essential for doctors to understand about nutrition if they are going to be advising their patients. I have a PhD in nutrition, and several nutritional "needs" (food-allergies and am celiac), and some of the advice that my doctor has given me about nutrition was laughable!
@c.w.2000

Are you sure this has changed everywhere in Canada? While I graduated as a pharmacist almost 30 years ago (at that time Nutrition was an elective, but not required), I saw a rheumatologist who got his MD in 2010 who didn't know anything about diet in the treatment of rheumatological disorders. In the US there are rheumatologists who work with a dietician on the team, and here we can have, as you mentioned, an astounding level of ignorance.
@charlottetooth1457
@charlottetooth1457 14 дней назад
@@c.w.2000 This change was probably implemented after your time. I know it is certainly required in Alberta, it may not be Canada-wide, although I was told that it was. But yes as you say, there is a shocking amount of ignorance about diet in chronic conditions in the medical community.

If you have coeliac disease (consuming anything with gluten triggers your autoimmune system to attack you) and you have to go into hospital, you are not guaranteed to get gluten free food options. How insane is that, a medical condition that requires you to eat a specific diet because if yiu eat it it will literally make you unwell can't be catered for in some NHS hospitals.

I can not get a nutritionist or dietician to help, I'm libink on chicken turkey and tiny amounts of sourdough, potato rice some limited overcooked mixed veg. At first I was afraid that this was gonna be another of those fatphobia, just eat well, gaslight people out of their symptoms kinda talk, but I am glad I kept listening because she actually tells a more nuanced story and sticks up for those with chronic and often overlooked diagnosis, and this actually explains a bit why some doctors act in these awful ways, because there is a bigger issue of lack of education.

May be an overshare, so I’m really sorry if it is! Firstly, thank you! These conversations are so important, thank you for having them. I’m a pastor at a church and I recognise I’ve never been good at looking after myself, and it sounds like that’s a big issue with health workers and hospitality workers. After going down with pneumonia nearly 3 years ago, I was left with chronic heart & lung conditions that have completely turned my life upside down. A frustrating part of what I experience with them is crashing after anything more than a couple of biscuits, and all the messaging is conflicting online about what’s best to avoid & eat. I’d love to be able to have a conversation with someone who is trustworthy and who understands some of what I experience as it’s so overwhelming. I feel like understanding what food is doing to my body will help me become more in control of my heart, pain and breathing, but where to start?! Especially when you have nothing in the tank to be researching and trying out foods etc… Thank you for this. These podcasts are brilliant! Please continue them! Love the longer form and the range of guests (and the bits with all of you together). Feels like I’m in the room with you, thank you.

Do you have access to a dietician? I live in Canada, and GPs are often able to refer to a dietician covered under the public healthcare system. Also, I wonder what you mean by "crashing"? This sounds like something to talk to your doctor about to try to figure out the cause.

@aboynamedjayy my personal experience of dieticians (in the USA when i lived there, and Australia now) indicates that all that training is pointless for the ones who don't have the skills to critically assess the strengths and weaknesses of research. My experience also tells me that many have a poor understanding of human biochemistry. 'Peer reviewed' has been shown to be worthless, 'prestigious journal' means nothing (according to their own past editors) and CGMs, that challenge much of the published wisdom on GI and resistant starch, are actively opposed by some because access to all that useful data might make patients anxious. If you're not one of these, I very much applaud you and wish you great success, but do not assume you are representative of all your colleagues.

@@flii87 So you think its annoying to have to click multiple buttons? Man, you are so close to get why many people are annoyed with them uploading the podcast to their main channel...

Actually, in terms of high quality research, the ketogenic diet is the most studied. Much of the Mediterranean diet research is weak, observational/epidemiological stuff, that carefully 'managed' questions about animal products, overplays the role of 'whole grains" (wholegrain pasta and brown rice are RARE) and has actively ignores any understanding of who dioes not tthrive on it.

Weird. Just today I was dreaming of finding more and more moldy food in the fridge and having to throw it all away. It's always sad sight in real-life (which thankfully doesn't happen often), so now apparently my nightmares have picked that up.

it's fair to voice your opinion, but I would remind you to do it constructively. you'll get more bees with honey instead of vinegar type thing. just simply say you prefer the cooking videos and aren't a fan of the podcasts. no need to get nasty. also, you have the freedom to not click on the video - did you know?

yeah, kinda. It would be nice if they moved the podcast to a sub channel.

Interesting sheila but honestly shes so far up her own arse its painful. A little bit of devils advocate when interviewing a guest would be better

Devil's advocate to what? She didn't say anything controversial.

um, everything she talked about is backed by multiple studies. and we all know healthcare workers, and teachers, are treated poorly. maybe you should try taking your head out of your own before you start criticizing others

Don't enjoy these long form interviews. T'would be better if the guest was interviewed whilst participating in a Sorted Food kitchen cooking adventure.

Their cooking videos are too chaotic to interview a guest during. while it would be funny, it would be really difficult to get each guests story across. I personally like these relaxing vids. they are great to listen to while at work without having to worry about missing something funny happening
