In this video we are doing an awesome looking crackle paint job with all spray cans. This one is going on a nice explorer style body, and is getting a two color crackle. We are doing the whole process from raw wood to crackle effect, so enjoy!

It's designed to work over acrylics. Automotive acrylics should fall in that category, but I think House of Kolor is urethane mostly.

I enjoyed your video and liked how descriptive you are, I see a lot of guys making how to videos that lead people totally wrong. I will say you killed me though how you balled up a rag to clean the sanding dust off after scuffing your primer. Just a helpful tip for others, blow the main dust off with air pressure if you can to get most off, then use your rag ( neatly folded lol) so you can flip your rag as you go making sure by the end, your surface is totally dust free. Also a money saving tip, isopropyl alcohol works extremely well for cleaning your surface and saves me a ton over the products like naphtha and other prep solvents.

I did this with a lumo pink and orange background coated with metallic sparkle clear with a white crackle over the top on a very badly beaten up bass. Looks amazing and my girls had a blast spraying the neon colours randomly over the body. Pickguard was painted by my younger daughter who got left with the guard and a box full of old nail polish. The crackle is fairly fragile (I used cheap stuff) and when I sprayed a clear coat to seal and protect it it ended up crackling even more.
@BradAngove
@BradAngove 4 года назад
Sometimes that happens. If you let it dry for a couple weeks the additional cracking might not have occurred. Sounds like a fun project that went well!

That way I would have the full range of colors to choose from rather than be limited to the colours available in crackle. Are there DIY solutions? Thanks again.
@BradAngove
@BradAngove 3 года назад
There are ways to mix paint so it will do that, but I don’t actually know how to do it and I’ve never bought the additives. I’ve also heard of some options involving putting down a layer of glue to create the shrinking effect, but I’ve never gotten it to work for me the way I want.

@brianfox340
@brianfox340 3 года назад
The effect of the crackle is way stronger where there's overlap between the red and orange, which REALLY drives home the point about thicker base paint layers causing a greater crackle effect. Really cool effect. How hard would it be (and/or how bad would it look) to clear coat this with spray cans? Would waiting less time between base coat and crackle cause deeper/larger crackles?
@BradAngove
@BradAngove 3 года назад
I think less time would likely increase crackle size. Clear coating with good quality spray cans would be fairly straightforward. Would take a lot of paint to get it perfectly smooth though.

Thanks for the video. I've been learning a lot going through a lot of your other videos as well. On this project, I know you used the 2X Painter's Touch series, but did your use gloss or satin red and orange? I literally just finished a crackle effect paint job on a Flying V. The crackle paint went on really well but the Montana Gold Red/Orange base colour was a really gritty/sandy finish, I just couldn’t get a good coverage. As such, when the crackle paint ‘crackled’ the orange/red colour disappeared on some parts and it was while instead! I really like the 2 tone end result and the crackling is brilliant but the Montana Gold paint Red/Orange was horrendous to use!

Hey Brad, love your stuff, got a quick question for you. How long do you have to let primer dry on wood before cleaning it with naptha? Also how long do you give the naptha to evaporate before adding color? Thanks!
@BradAngove
@BradAngove 4 года назад
I usually give the primer a day or two, sand lightly, and then clean. It only takes a few minutes to finish evaporating after I clean it.

Pretty cool! If I go with a base of gloss black, over that the chameleon trick, and the glitter galaxy buried under six coats of clear, and then,...top it off with crackle, My guitar will weigh thirty pounds, and eight inches thick! 🤪

I used to think up stuff like that all the time haha. I find that one cool effect gets lots within another though if you overdo it.

Hello Brad! Amazing demo it´s! I´m wondering whether this crackle paint is workable on the color coat of polyurethane?
@BradAngove
@BradAngove 2 года назад
I’m not sure. This stuff is designed to be used on acrylic I believe.

Do you use a gloss, flat, or Matt spray paint as base
@BradAngove

Usually gloss, but I sand it lightly before painting over it.

Hi Brad, I love your RU-vid vids. you inspired me to do a crackle paint on a guitar for my son. i have that crackle applied now. question: can i use a 2k spray max clear coat to finish it? can i also use an acrylic clear coat, what would be best? and finally, should i sand the crackle layer first? greetings from the Netherlands, Jeroen
@BradAngove
@BradAngove 3 года назад
Yes you can. I think the 2K is best. I used 2K on mine without sanding first and it is looking good.

@@BradAngove I did this finish on my guitar after viewing this video. It came out great. I’m going to use Max Spray 2K clear coat on it but have handled it without gloves. I’m not going to sand before applying the clear coat but what should I use to clean the surface and ensure none of my oils are on it? Also I watched your 2K video and you said to scuff after letting it dry before building up coats. What should I use to scuff it? Thanks for the videos.
@BradAngove
@BradAngove 2 года назад
I would scuff it with grey scotch brite and then clean with wax and grease remover before painting.

The crackle is very fine. How do you get bigger crackle "chunks"?
@BradAngove

Apply both layers heavier.
