In this video we take an everyday guitar and make it super 80's radical with an ultra ill crackle finish! Part one of two, this episode is all about the paint.
Please for the love of God, make another one soon This is brilliant, and you sir inspired me to do this myself. I spray painted a galaxy type background and im waiting for the crackle paint in the mail. Cant wait to see the final result. It already looks good with the galaxy spray paint but its gonna pop with the crackle. SNAP!
Holy shit! I HAVE THIS GUITAR!! It was taken apart in my basement. Old band mate found it in his crawlspace 10 years ago and it’s sat in my basement since then. Just finished sanding. Can’t wait to crackle it.
That looks great! I've been trying to find some of that verblee paint to spray in my hvlp gun.. but the only place I can find that type of pain is in England and the minimum order is like 160 pounds which is like I 120.00 plus shipping..so I'm just going to use that Montana crackle paint you have.. I bought a cheap Squier at Guitar Center for about $80 and got a different pickguard which has a hum single pickup configuration...you should use clear polyester made by simtec...its 90% the hardness of glass and sands and buffs really nice!! It's what most of the pro guitar shops use..it will easily cover the crackel paint and look pro when you done. Good video very informative!!
Ya gotta let the color dry completely, spray a few heavy coats of clear down, let it tack off for 5-10 mins, then hit it with a heavy crackle layer, and use a can of duster or a fan or a heat gun to help it crack instantly. Im pretty sure those tiny micro cracks are caused by there not being enough liquid surface tension for them to pull it apart in larger chunks , so it just drys and breaks very small. So basically you want a wet clear coat down a few mins before you spray the crackle. Its kinda like ice freezing on a lake vs on a sidewalk.
Great technique. I am an experienced artist and I absolutely learned something from you - thanks. Please take my advice for your own health - wear a mask, and set up a spray booth with a fan venting to the outside.
Ahhh! This stuff is easier than I thought. The paint does the crackle work, you just have to make sure to apply it as even as youd personally like the crackle...steady hand, good brain. Nice. I expected a blow torch to burn the wood with special paint or something, idk why.
Continuing to watch this is the best painting instructional ever, because everyone always says DONT PAINT IN HUMIDITY. But as a Florida man this has been more than helpful
First 30 seconds: "please excuse the loud crickets and grasshoppers" Me; This guy must live in Florida Him: "but I'm from Florida" Me: yep sounds about right
Hey! First of all thank you for this video. I have a few questions, the test piece you show was pretty amazing and I would like to know wich cans you used to paint it and catch this lava effect. And I would like to know wich can you use to the body to, I didn't find anything here in France that can match with what Montana said for the crackle finish, I used acrylics paint but I can't find cans who are bright or like nacred who works. Thank you buddy, amazing work, I'm making my test to!
I've been wanting to do one of these finishes, but I'm worried about it coming out small cracks. I love the big cracks, but it just seems like such a crap shoot with no real control. Thanks for the video, it was probably the most helpful of any crackle finish video I've seen yet. 😎
i just bought mohawk crackle lauequer black they make wht, clear so u can tint it and black u need to use nitro for the base coat i tried dupli color it did not go well. but thw stuff is good.
"...takin' it in the house 'cause the A/C is on..." and "...go-on in and sit there with the lights off because of the,.. 'bugs'..." ...YEEEEAAAAAHH right! We ALL heard them cops comin'... ...I don't know what you could possibly mean, "black guitar", officer.... mines is a yellow-crackle! Haha!
Man,That yellow/green "slime green" would be awesome with all black hardware and Emgs.🤘👍....That looks killer at the end!!!Sorry Brotha, but I think I'm gonna have to steal that concept and put it on one of those 200$ Jackson 7 strings.
miniral spirits works to and not the milky white stuff just normal minural spirts also works great for wet sanding it does not epand the wood like water does.
Thanks for the video, I put a really thick coat of turquoise Montana crackle on my freshly painted dark blue guitar and you were right, we really do have to put a really thick layer of crackle. I want to know, if you don’t put the clear coats on it, will the crackle paint peel off, because I don’t mind a textured guitar
The paint will scratch very easy and bit will peel over time. My recommendation would be to just spay one good coat of clear and let it dry. It will still be textured, but it will be protected.
Acclimate. Striations. Careful, man - your education is showing... Cool paint action - quality advice. This is some kinda full-service youtube channel, or what? Sweet!
Will Krylon Gloss Green Fluorescent Spray Paint work especially if I’m stripping the guitar down to bare wood? This was such an insightful video thank you for posting this!
I know some krylon paints work but idk about that specific one homie, but I just did my first crackle on a kit guitar & I used the Montana gold acid green, & it worked really well, so I know their brand of neon green works with the crackle homie & for the prep work I just did a lil grain filling & then used some white primer before doing the crackle,
My question is can you put a different nozzle on the can to make it spray out heavier so that you get more of the crackle paint on for wider cracks, or would it be beneficial to paint the sections completely at individual times?
I have a Jackson neon crackle that has some spots where the color turned lighter/whiter on the crackle. What could be causing that? It was apparently made only a couple years back
Great vid. So you used Krylon semi gloss for the base coat? Why not flat? Does clearing over the semi gloss cause issues? What exact paint for base did you use ? Thanks
Best Crackle paint video I've seen yet, I finally have the nerve to do this! One thing I didn't catch... isn't the paint supposed to be a certain type, like lacquer, enamel, oil based, or something like that (which causes the crackle effect), ?
@@hideoutdodge01 You need a glossy undercoat, which for me was a Jungle green Krylon. It was not the all in one, I primed it separately. On top I used Montana black Crackle. Montana is the brand name. You can do it! Just find something flat and smooth you can paint first as a test. I like to use old CDs.
@@ForsytheVideo I bought the Montana and also some Colormaxx last year, just sitting in my closet. I do not see the green you used in anything but the Fusion... I will keep looking. I have watched every crackle paint tutorial on the web in the last year and your's is the best... no fluff!
When you gonna do the Warlock? I'm planning on doing an NJ Warlock (red w/ black crackle) an Ironbird (hot pink w/ black crackle) and a Mockingbird (Green w/ black crackle). I have to wait till Spring though... way too cold here.
@@hideoutdodge01 You know what, it was the fusion, I forgot that they discontinued the stand alone jungle green, sorry about that! You can hit it with the crackle after about 45 minutes.
'Crackle' is stupid, but I admit... this looks excellent! This may be something to try out if you have painted models and guitars when you were younger (spraying takes skills!).
That looks cool I'm thinking about doing a les paul build or an explorer check out my buddies channel 6stringstanger he has some cool builds too cheers ant
@@ForsytheVideo im going to gold leaf the body soon and after the varnish i will put a thick clear coat over it, ill then spray the crackle paint over it
It seems to work best when it's past the tacky stage but before it has cured, which is why I do it withing 45 minutes. This is what works best for me and I have experimented quite a bit.
@@ForsytheVideo I seen that after i posted that 😂😂 hey u like old bc riches check out Zimms guitars we have a series going garbage to glitter I think you'll like it
Hear you bro! Planning to make it on a strat with red black crackle, matte black pickguard single humbucker almost like the tom delonge-ish style reffered to eddie munson's warlock
