AWESOME Feeding Adaptations - because suction feeding sucks on land

Suction feeding sucks on land! The good news is that reptiles and amphibians, like frogs, chameleons, monitor lizards, and turtles have some amazing adaptations that make feeding on land a possibility. And best of all, this transition onto land, actually made possible the evolution of my personal favorite adaptation of all. What is it? I'll tell you this much, it's stinkin' rad!

I watched this video and they guy basically said that organisms don't decide to change and they don't decide that any change is actually helpful. It's a matter of who's able to breed and who isn't. So an organism could be born with a super helpful trait that would make life much easier for the species if that trait continued to be spread. But that animal just is never able to breed so that trait never gets passed on despite how helpful it would have been to whole species. It's also possible that non helpful genes are able to get passed on in the same way where it just happens that a creature born with "bad" genetics is somehow able to breed and spread it genes. You can see this in humans with cleft pallet or with sickle cell anemia. Or some humans are born with natural resistance to HIV/AIDS but it's an extremely rare condition despite being so helpful.

12:20 I'm not sure if I would consider this example to be cooler, but it is similar. The fact that ancient fish that evolved to live on land, evolved their tail fin into just tails. And then as some groups of mammals, which include today's porpoises and whales, evolved BACK into the aquatic environment, their tails became tail fins again, but now PERPENDICULAR to how they used to be! (i.e. "fish" have vertical tails fins, porpoises, whales, manatees, etc. have horizontal tail fins)

I would love to hear more about evolution and cool adaptations. No reptile related, but for me the most interesting adaptation on how to bring food to your mouth is the hands. This adaptation is related to bipedalism, when you only need two extremities out of four for walking, the other two are now available to grab and handle things, reach for higher tree branches, approaching something that might be dangerous without exposing other parts of the body... I'm a physical therapist so my POV is a little biased, but the arms and the hands are stinking rad too. I could talk about them for hours.

Always love your vids, would love more on this series. Recently saw a stinkin' awesome snake at a reptile show, and would love to hear you talk about the Australian Water Python.

Speaking of turtles and suction feeding, one of my favorite if not my favorite extinct turtle is Ocepechelon bouyai. It's only from a 70 cm long complete skull but it was probably between 3 and 4 m long. It lived at the end of the Cretaceous in what is now Morocco, and its skull looks like the one of beaked whales and the Syngnathid fish, meaning it used a suction feeding method when hunting. How cool is that! 👀🐢

It's pretty rad that octopi are basically functionally colorblind but they 'see' color through their skin to become the heckin best at camouflage

You can always tell someone is excited (or tweaking, but I don't think that's a problem here) because you can see the entirety of their irises as they talk, and Clint does that *all the time*. *I* do that all the time and it usually wigs people out. Speaking as someone on the spectrum (not putting Clint anywhere; I'm just saying), it's cool to see someone else who gets as animated and gushes as hard about the things he loves as Clint does and be rewarded for it. It's encouraging. Also, can we just talk about how impressive it is that this biologist genius man explained mutations and biological fitness WITHOUT using Darwin's Finches? My guy. Untouchable god-king of science and reptiles. Hahahahaha

Lol, the face on the Mata Mata turtle after he ate...lol I am aware that’s just how his face looks but he just looks so satisfied!

Hey Clint and team! You know what is STINKING RAD? The technical terms you display below your videos! I TRULY LOVE IT! Just knowing how to spell it opens up a lot of option for explanation which definitely wouldn't fit in a screen
