Alright! So there seems to be something special about that ye old 14mm 2.5, which i keep hearing about again and again, here and there (besides the usual mentions). Will get it then! Wouldn't necessarily need the focal length (have 12-35mm 2.8, 20mm 1.7 II and the many kit zooms that overlap), but i do covet the SIZE, and since i'm much more into smaller and smaller bodies nowadays (GM1/GM5 especially), it only makes the perfect sense. M4/3 at their finest with small, light-weight, quality lenses. It's quite a special luxury in it's own right. Thanks for this quality video, you stand-out from the sea of mediocrity with great stuff! Have a good day now!

If you can afford it the 15mm f1.7 is one of the sharpest lenses for MFT and is faster than the 14mm while only being slightly bigger. There are dji versions of it too that are optically identical but you can pick up cheaper than the Leica branded ones.

Thanks for the suggestion Joseph! Looks like a fine lens indeed. I like the colors through it, it's beautiful simplistic in design plus the aperture ring. I appreciate the praised sharpness, but for me, it's not the be-all-end-all anymore. Even most quality vintage primes are certainly sharp enough (but rarely wide open of course), but with the vintage look that i often seem to prefer over the "digital". That said, quality vintage wide-angles are few and far between (often not that impressive on m4/3), so it's a bit of a different ball park. I wanted to mention that only to say, that sharpness isn't all that important anymore. Well, there's good use in both worlds, both appreciated. Manual delight when there's time and space to slow down (which i prefer), AF for faster moments / added convenience (and possible frustration with contrast AF) 15mm 1.7 is small, but not small enough for my wants. It's seems it's the difference between a small normal lens and pancake i'm interested here. Plus the price difference, i'm sure i can find the 14mm for very pleasing price in good time. It's a matter of time, patience, and some keen eye. And i'll be using it for video, so it's all good. Cheap, quality pancake that performs well, it's there with me wherever i "throw" it? Sounds excellent to me. I would jump on the Leica with no hesitation if it would have image stabilization and weather-sealing, but as it stands now, i'm not jumping on it per say :) But maybe the right moment comes around in the future, if i'm that invested. Thanks for the heads up, have a fantastic day now!

Own it myself and love it. Haven´t changed lenses since i own it xD. Only downside, not weather sealed & stabilization...that´s why iam thinkin of trading it. So scared getting this beauty messed up when i go outdoors.. Thought about gettin the 12-35 f2.8 instead, i know it´s 2.8 vs. 1.7 but, weather sealing and IS comes with it. I do own a 12-60 f 3.5-5.6 which is sealed as well.. Does it make sense to upgrade to the 12-35 and therefore give the two others away? Any thoughts/comparisons?

When it comes to vlogging I have used both the 14mm and the 20mm, both do hunt even when you switch to manual and facial tracking it is all over the place. That said for filming video both of them are good. I now vlog with the 12-60mm as it doesn't focus hunt. The 45mm Zuko is also an excellent video lens, for vlogging it is okay.

@@xianjohn9031 You can do it with any software. Premiere and Da Vinci Resolve are the best, and the latter also distributes a free version. Color grading is a matter of skill and knowledge, just like filming, directing, editing and so on. If you're lazy and have money to spend, buy LUT packs from RU-vidrs and other cinematographers. Ask Nigel, maybe he can give you some for free...

I don't shoot video, but I'm so glad to know others appreciate the 20/1.7 and the 14/2.5. There may not be such a tiny pancake lens for any other system that has such beautiful rendering and great IQ wide open as the 20/1.7. Put it on a GX850/880 and you have a better pocket camera than a Ricoh GR IIIx. I had one. Still have the Lumix cameras and lenses.

My personal best are lumix 12-35 2.8 and lumix 20 1.7 They cover all for adventure filming plus give you some outstanding low light on e.g. Panasonic GH5. In my opinion a perfect combination, especially that 20mm is sized like a small box of matches
@samandchar2004
@samandchar2004 6 лет назад
Have the original versions of the 14 and 20, great lenses especially on a small body like the GM5 I have. Especially love the 20’s rendering. As a side note, if you can find them (I imported from Japan), there’s an adapter lens kit for the 14, which has a 0.79 TC (meaning approx 22mm equiv), a “macro” close up lens and a fisheye lens. They work on the 14 and one of the kit lenses. Makes a nice small kit and if you don’t intend to use fisheye/close up much, it’s cheap. The 0.79 is great for Astro or just in tight spaces

„Awesome Micro 4/3 lenses“ and not a single Olympus lens included? The 17mm, 25mm and 45mm f/1.8 are impressive lenses! Extremely fast & quiet auto focus and great optical quality! And then There‘s the 75mm f/1.8... gorgeous stuff! And the 12mm f/2, great wide angle. Olympus now also has announced new PRO prime lenses at f/1.2 (17mm, 25mm, 45mm and soon 12mm).

@@brodcastization Depends. I have only 45mm 1.8 and it's indeed great. But Panasonic 20mm f1.7 as well and 12-35 f2.8 and 12-60 f3.5-5.6 too. Last one is flawless as versatile travel lens and it's very sharp. I can name two lenses that are far from perfect and these are old 45-200 and 14-45 I think both from 2009. I guess Olympus has some worse pieces as well.

As well as Nikon DSLR's I have LUMIX GX7 and only shoot stills. I've the 14-42 kit lens which is great for travel (size and weight) - stopped bringing the Nikons on foreign trips. I also have the Samyang 7.5 (fun lens)and 12mm (landscapes) lenses plus the Panasonic 45-150 and am considering the summilux 15mm f1.7 but don't know if I would use it enough to justify its purchase. All my filters are adapted for both DSLR and mf3 cameras. I do agree that with mf3, you need to keep the size down or what's the point? I also agree with your choice 👍

When I was looking at wide angle, I ended up splurging on the Olympus 12mm f2.0 over the Panasonic 14mm f2.5. In retrospect, I should have saved a few bucks (like 700 bucks actually) and gone with the 14mm. The form factor is better and it would have allowed me to pocket it whole the 20mm f1.7 was mounted. That said, the 12mm is super duper sharp and from what I recall the 14mm wasn't in the same league. Decisions decisions... This is such a first world problem...

Nice video Nigel!. BTW, you mention that not using autofocus in your video, so how you maintain the focus?, its still quite sharp! Commonly when I sit in front of the camera, event small movement produces unsharp video, is it because you maintain the aperture around f/2.5-4 and put good lighting or any other tricks? I am using GH3 with14 f/2.5, and a bit problem using autofocus for video, so do you mind to share about it?

Maybe in the US you guys don't hear a lot about Olympus, but they have some pretty great lenses too. the 17mm 1.8 certainly is certainly as good as the 2 first lenses you mention, they have plenty of great lenses, if you can afford it, their 7-14mm 2.8 and 12-100 4.0 are really nice lenses to work with, and this last one is maybe one of the most flexible one you'll ever own.
@shiznuts
@shiznuts 6 лет назад
The 17mm f/1.8 additionally is nice because it has the manual focus de-clutch like the PRO ones. Focus-by-wire is such a drag and Olympus has found the solution, without having to go fully manual all the time. Unfortunately no such implentation on the absolutely gorgeous 75mm f/1.8. The 60mm f/2.8 Macro is one of the better macro solutions out there, it really is. The f/2.8 zooms are incredible, with the 7-14mm, 12-40mm and 40-150mm f/2.8 PRO lenses (and 1.4x TC) you can go from 7-210mm, 14-420mm 35mm equiv. with just 3 lenses (albeit pricey ones). You could argue that they have a tame, precise and a bit cold character to them, but you can't argue that they're just quality lenses. The 12-100 f/4 IS is a gem too, played around with that and an E-M1 Mark II at a Photokina afterparty sorta event last year. Though, f/4 definitely doesn't rock my boat personally. Great for daytime event type of shooting however. These Panasonic lenses mentioned in the video are fairly budget. The f/1.7 range is really good value. Of course that 20mm pancake is super small and the 25mm super affordable, but nothing that blows me away. I'm rather pleased however with the Leica 15mm f/1.7, for a Leica it's actually not at all overpriced, it's superb value! Great looking lens. The 42.5mm f/1.7 is very nice value as well and was the first Lumix prime to get OIS. Then there's third party. Not that a big fan of the Rokinon/Samyang/Walimex lenses, they used to mean very soft wide open and just not holding up very well and being all manual of course... supposedly nowadays there are a couple that really nail it though, but I haven't delved into that too much. But Sigma is doing awesome. Back in the day they had the EX DN 19, 30 & 60mm f/2.8 primes (the first two initially with grippy ring, later like the 60mm all flush metal). Mechanically they weren't the greatest, optically however true contenders and they were extremely cheap! These days it's all about DC DN. The 30mm f/1.4 DC DN is out and it's something else! They should officially launch the 16mm f/1.4 any day now. The ART and Contemporary series by Sigma are just such great value and quality, it's hard to go wrong. Then there's a whole bunch of others. Like Voigtländer... their 17.5mm f/0.95 is amazeballs! SLR Magic e.g. has the HyperPrime CINE 25mm T0.95. Zhongyi/ZY Optics/Mitakon has a very compact and more affordable 25mm f/0.95. Laowa has the 7.5mm f/2 MFT. Veydra has a cinema primes line-up of T2.2's around the 1000 bucks mark a pop. C-mount, or C-mount derived lenses are becoming a thing. 7Artisans, Kamlan, Zonlai, Meike, Neewer, etc. A brilliant thing of these mirrorless cameras: sensor stabilization. Even with 3rd party or vintage lenses, you can get away with some handheld shooting! Whether you're adapting a whole set of Contax Zeiss primes through a simple C/Y to EOS adapter and EOS to M4/3 Speedbooster or Lens Turbo (or the same that goes for Leica Summicron-R (E55)), going with the (Jason) 'Bourne lenses' (Nikon AF(-S) Nikkor ED 28-70mm f/2.8 D & 80-200mm f/2.8 D (throw in the 17-35mm f/2.8 D for good measurement) or the stills versions of the expensive Tokina Cinema AT-X range: AT-X PRO DX 11-16mm f/2.8 II, AT-X PRO FX 16-28mm f/2.8 & AT-X 535 PRO DX 50-135mm f/2.8 or legendary Angenieux design AT-X PRO II 28-70mm f/2.6-2.8. Or anything else vintage with M42 (Russians! Like the Helios 44-2 58mm f/2), FD, AI(-s), PK, MD, etc mount... you just have endless possibilities and joy!

Nice informative Review, The 12 to 35mm 2.8 is my current work-horse for filming, Would it be worth while in me adding a 20mm 1.7 to my lens collection ? I can see theres a better f stop, but loss of image stabilisation and weather sealing.
@pavelperina7629
@pavelperina7629 5 лет назад
Quite late reply. I would not recommend 20mm 1.7 for filming at all. It's good for stills only. It focuses slowly, it retracts a bit during focusing and this has two huge cons: it's noisy and focus hunting is very visible (and audible). Loss of image stabilization is not a significant issue if you have image stabilization on sensor (G80/G85/G9/...). It might be ok in manual focus mode (fixed focus), but I'm not sure if it's suffiecient for you. For stills I'm choosing 20mm/f1.7 over 12-35/f2.8 mostly for "social events". It allows lower ISO or shorter times and less motion blur in low light situations and it has natural angle of view without zooming half way.

What would you recommend for filming paragliding from the air, ive got the g7 but need a lens that's stable, wide. I get really good footage with my go pro, but want the same field of view but with my g7, on a budget. If your unsure what kind of filming I do, to get an idea see my latest video and you'll know what I mean, which is from a gopro. Didnt get great footage at all from my standard 14-42 lense on my g7. Ps great video

I had the gen1 20mm f1.7 and it was a sharp lens; but it's super slow focus.. and I got ZERO shots of my kids running around; and I got less than 20% of the shots in focus.. So I bought the 25mm f1.7; it's quiet and fast focusing.

Hey @NigelBarros I just bought myself the 14mm f2.5. Do you shoot Weddings with the 2 prime lenses that you mentioned? Do you feel you have a lack of zoom when doing so? Also I am debating on the Panasonic 12-35mm f2.8 vs the sigma. I feel the IS on the panasonic is what I am leaning towards, but I find the sigma video content and image much nicer. What would your recommendation be?

Great Video Nigel! What do you think about c mount lenses? I had the 25mm 1.4 which was great. There is also a 8mm 3.8 c mount lens I was looking at. I currently have the kit lens and the 25mm, there so sharp compared to Canon lenses! I would like to pick up the 12-35mm if I can sell my Canon 17-55mm. How much sharper is the 12-35 than the kit lens? Thanks!
@NigelBarros
@NigelBarros 6 лет назад
The 12-35mm is tack sharp even wide open at 2.8. I absolutely loved it and would say you really can't go wrong with that lens, and the original version is getting cheaper now that the mark 2 was released. I used to use C mount lenses on my EOS-m but with those, i feel like it's a hit or miss, like the Fujian 35mm F1.7 c mount lenses I've found to be really soft at the corners. but the Michael 35mm f1.6 is significantly sharper. but those are fun to mess with cause thyere so cheap. Thanks for tuning in Nate!

I'm very new to buying my own camera equipment, so thank you very much for the helpful video! Are all of these lenses native MFT mounts or would you need to buy an adapter? I'm looking specifically at the Panasonic 20 or 25mm.
@villemononen5303
@villemononen5303 6 лет назад
All lenses mentioned on the video (except Sigma 18-35mm 1.8) are native, aswell as the 20mm 1.7 and 25mm 1.7 you mentioned. Optimized for m4/3, often in size aswell. Lens + adapter would show up in noticeably bigger size / bulk (especially in comparison to these little tiny wonderful pancakes). Pros and cons to both, each their own use. Still, there are some adaptable mounts that can be somewhat smallish in size too. Like the C-mount (TV / Surveillance) for example, but rarely used to for "serious" work. Or Leica L39, Konica AR, Canon FD etc. etc. Konica has had some nice pancakes / small lenses back in day. Soviet / Leica / Leica-clone lenses for L39, like the Industar-61 for example (great for macro). Not pancake, but small nonetheless. Furthermore about adapting lenses -> ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-o1zOPcSJxsE.html Well, welcome to the mirrorless community and happy shooting! You'll be capturing great shots in no time. Be well!

All Things DanDan. No, I shot this on the gh3 and g6 they both don’t offer v-log or cinlike d. I shot in natural with all the saturation and contrast turned down. Hope that helps!

Hi Nigel!!! I am going to buy a gh5s with the 12-35 ii, VOIGTLANDER 17.5 (the 35mm is my preferred distance and what else I use ..) and I want to finish with a 42.5, I am between VOIGTLANDER 42.5 f / 0.95 and PANASONIC-LEICA 42.5 F / 1.2. What do you know about these two lenses ??? It's worth a lot of money and I'm indecisive. thank you very much and good channel!

How does the Panasonic 14mm f2.5 compare to the kit lens at the same focal length? Is there significant difference in image quality that will make it worth spending extra $150.

Hi Nigel , great video. Just wondering which lens hood is that on the 20mm pancake ?
@villemononen5303
@villemononen5303 6 лет назад
Looks like a simple step-up ring (46mm to 58mm), the same you can see on the 14mm 2.5. Not so much for shading purposes obviously (typical use for a lens hood), but i would guess to be used with filters (CPL etc.), and some added protection (plus bigger lens cap). 12-35mm 2.8 shares the same 58mm filter size, so he would use the same filter(s) in all of them. Another choice would be a generic vented hood, if you're into those kinds of things. - 46mm vented lens hood (black and silver) -> www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_sacat=0&_sop=15&_nkw=46mm+vented+lens+hood&rt=nc&LH_BIN=1 - 43mm snap-on lens cap (inside vented hood) -> www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_sacat=0&_sop=15&_nkw=43mm+snap-on+lens+hood&rt=nc&LH_BIN=1 You can get the 43mm snap-on lens cap cheaper too, but here i wanted to point to the desirable type. There's no bayonet options for 20mm. Alright, have a good day now and happy shooting!

Your sound is perfect, but you are crushing the blacks a bit. I like that you cover manual focus lenses. Any of them, even the no name ones are good and the more aberrations the better, as they may bring out the creative in the user. No bad tools only bad workmen...?

Hi Nigel! I have a Lumix G85 and I'm needing to film a music video. What lens would you recommend? I want to do a lot of slow motion in 1080p and have some nice background blur too. I have the kit lens, 12-60mm. Thanks!
