You advocate for the Polarpro filters which are expensive and there is no guarantee they will fit your next Gopro whereas the 52mm filters will fit the next generation of aluminum cases.

I find that the metal frame for my GoPro hero 7 black really stops it from getting to hot 👍 that’s the main reason I bought it and it works really well 👌

Could you please tell me the make/model of the dual GoPro mount you show at the 5:30 mark in this video. It looks like the most practical setup for using an external mic with the Hero5 Black. Thanks so much. Great video 👍

You don't think this would be helpful if you're into action sports? I ride a OneWheel and often hit 20+ mph. I like the added protection the metal frame provides, and the cold shoe on the top.

You are right Kyle Martin. I'm using a Hero 4 silver in a metal harnas on top of my dslr. when putting all things on it to extend it this becomes heavy indeed and the mounts between hotshoo and harnas do sometimes like to crack also.

Thanks for the info, I have never heard about the mounts cracking. That is really interesting. I have seen a lot of people with GoPros on top of their DSLRs, how useful do you find the footage from the camera? Do you shoot photos or video with the GoPro?

i'm using Gopro mostly for video in that setup on a DSLR and in daylight. In some cases for quick setups i also do use Gopro for photos with the timelapse-function. You can see footages on my channel involving timelapses. I'm not using gopro's video in the low light condition that often which can give me more work in post-editing later. The cracks in the mounts have their weakest spot in the connection with the plastic mounts and iron bolt, in heavy loads like you mention in the clip that is the most fragile spot.

I agree! GoPro's best feature is it's size. I use the GoPro foam wind muff with success, but think if you want good sound a lav mic would be best.

I think it's very effective at cutting the wind noise. It's still just the GoPro mic, but it's simple. I've only used the Hero 5.

Of course more protection for the ACTUAL camera :D You apparently use your camera indoors or just don't do any activity with your gopro.

4:03 slight correction - it's not actually a hotshoe mount, it's a coldshoe instead. Difference being that a hotshoe activates a camera function like an external flash, etc. and a coldshoe is just a mount. I have this exact setup (alum case, Rode Videomic Go (not Pro) and GoPro mic adapter) which I use for capturing footage of stuff like car meets, etc. When it's mounted to my GoPro 3Way it makes a bit of a groaning sound if I haven't mounted it right, but this is the fault of the 3Way. Bottom line is that I hate the sound captured through the Hero5's mic's, it's too boomy and not crisp enough. I found this to be a good overall setup.

My hero 7 black overheats a lot when recording 4K30 or higher. I'm hoping a metal frame like this will help dissipate the heat from the camera better than the plastic frame that comes with the camera. The silver version of this case should reflect more heat than the black hero 7 black when shooting video in the sun. Finally, the gopro mount screws can be secured using some loctite glue if needed I expect or a tripod to gopro adapter could be screwed into the tripod hole.

u missed one important point!!! with metal case u can easily charge your camera whereas for original case u need to open the case which not pleasant at all.

Excellent "food for thought" video! My vote is for awesome... I film in some pretty rough environments and the exterior of the GoPro is not immune to damage like nicks, bumps and scrapes. At the very least the metal cage protects the camera from those things. Additionally I can use much less expensive standard filters and accessory lens kits than the "made for GoPro" ones.

Do you introduce any shake to the camera when utilizing the dual mount instead of the metal housing? I would think there would be extra movement to the camera (while minor) might be just enough to turn a nice video into a mediocre one. Plus the dual mount is only a few dollars less than the metal housing and when weight isn't an issue, then is the metal housing worse when you are only trying to introduce a few needed accessories like a external microphone.

Buying a metal cage for run and gun vlogging. Need to mount Rode video micro, mic adapter. The cage is also useful if you want to use a phone as a monitor. Mount the phone on the side with a swivel arm. Will also use it for in car peice to camera.

They are probably tooling holes to aid in the holding and machining of the case.

Do the filters affect the water tightness of the camera ? It would be a durability issue for me.

I am not sure about how after market filters affect the waterproofness of the camera. Remember the HERO5/6 is only waterproof to 10m before you need to put the camera into the dive housing so waterproofing something to that depth should not be super challenging. I have not used the Polar Pro filters underwater so I can not comment.

Having paid a whole $11 for a metal housing that can take road Debris, Brush strikes with multi hard mount points and a 52mm replaceable lens that is $3-8 on ebay not counting what is in my Photography collection already that is compatible. is a no brainier for me.

That bottom holes not being threaded is an easy fix, a 1/4-20 tap only costs a couple of dollars.

I liked your analysis... Why metal... mechanics or industrial video work... I want that extra protection of the extra lens and the durability of a metal case. 4 ounces... so what!!! I've made videos with a cam that accepted VHS tapes. Probably before your time. If you had done a modicum of research you would have learned that the untapped holes on the bottom of the frame are vents. Another reason I like the Alum frame is the cold shoe mount area on top of the frame may be drilled and tapped to accept the "goprong" for mounting below whatever. The Hero7 does not like to video upside down.

It depends if you are trying to mount the two cameras facing forward (side by side) or forward and back (back to back)

that why you take the gopro factory lens cap off it won't be waterproof then you put in the metal frame then put rhe 52mm filter on top thats only one filter . Sound like your trying to sell us on the other company filters. Plus 52mm filters what goes on DLSR cameras .

Oddly enough I want it for it's weight. A mirrorless camera gimbal's min payload spec is usually far more that a GoPro. I could add this, throw a mic on it and not need a second dedicated GoPro gimbal.

Good video detailing the pros and cons of that metal case. I have the latest iteration of that case for my H6. Bought it mainly to mount an external mic. And to be able to keep the side door on the camera when using the mic adapter. I have removed the included filter and do not use one. (Although the included lens cap is nice to put on for protection when I toss the rig into my bag.) I also feel the metal case affords a bit more drop protection for some of the situations where I place the camera. After buying that metal case, I purchased a Kupton frame for my H5. a.co/fyV3gST That was simply to have access to the side compartment with the door on the camera. (Will GoPro ever fix their poorly designed frame to accommodate that? Who knows.) A few weeks after purchase, I sanded the top and attached a cold shoe. So now I have two cases that will hold an external mic.

Nice! That is some really valuable information. I think mounting microphones and lights are one of the main draws of this frame. Maybe in an upcoming video I will mod on the extra mount holes fix the problems with the back door having to be completely removed to get the camera out.

You make a video trying to convince people they shouldn’t like something? No mention of stacking filters? If the metal case is popular and you don’t like doesn’t that make you in the minority? There are also variations, I have one with all threaded holes on four sides.
