The first step in creating an absolutely awesome paint job is having perfectly mixed paint! Having a homemade paint shaker like this is the first step in getting the perfect paint job.
Find all the specifications and free downloads here: www.bouldercreekrailroad.com/...
In this tutorial I’ll show you exactly how I built this awesome paint shaker and I’ll make sure you have all the information you need so you too can build one.
This paint shaker is perfect for mixing hobby paints like those from The Scale Modellers Supply, Vallejo, Tamiya & Citadel just to name a few however the mounting bracket is designed so that various paint holders can be attached making it easy to make custom paint holders for any brand of paint that will be compatible with the paint shaker.
If you are a model railroader, war games miniature builder, military modeler, aircraft modeler and just about everything in between then you’ll definitely benefit from a tool like this.
For more information and for all the measurements and 3D printer STL files be sure to visit

Thanks everyone for watching the video, unfortunately I’ll be away as I publish the video and I won’t be able to reply to any comments straight away. As soon as I’m back I’ll try to get back to as many of you as I can and I make sure to read all the comments! In the mean time feel free to check out my website where I’ve posted all the specific components I used with links to the places where I purchased them as well as all the specific measurements and the 3D printed STL files, it’s all there: www.bouldercreekrailroad.com/paint-shaker.html Thanks for being awesome and I hope you have a Merry Christmas

Daniel - I did the same thing, mounted to a blade with Velcro and a piece of foam. And you still have a very usable saw for anything that needs cutting. There's ALWAYS something that needs cutting!

I have a Bosch saw that had its handle broken (stepped on it by mistake, they don't make them like they used to) and i cut the whole back end off, screwed it to a board that hooks on my ceiling. I hang cans (spray) via an an aluminium cutting blade (for some reason it was the easiest to weld to with a stick welder, which i had at the time) to which i welded a small basket made of 4 mm thick wire. IT shakes the everlasting bejesus out of my cans. And the results are amazing, all the streaky blobs, the uneven paint that comes from spray paint that's been left on the shelf for a while, GONE. Best DIY i did.

I've designed a similar paint shaker thanks to this video using an electromotor from an old car boot, 3D printed parts and screws. Thanks for the idea!

For others in same situation, the aluminium hub part is more often called a "rigid flange coupling" in the world of asian cnc lingo, for searching on ebay. And thank you for a great video and the inspiration, I might try to make one of these out of wood for the most part and hope it don't shake it apart :D.

Very creative bit of kit there Luke! Always enjoy watching your videos... Can't stress how helpful having a decent drill press/stand (not a attachment to a Dremel or rotary tool, but an actual drill press) is for a model builder. With a little bit of creativity, you can use them for a lot of model building projects, that would be very difficult to do without one.

Very ingenious if a bit Heath Robinson. Being without access to a 3D printer I scrounged an old laminator. Cutting a hole in the plastic top gives access to the rollers but still covers the electricals. Snip off the wires to the heaters at the circuit board and you’re ready. Put as many bottles as you want in a round straight sided container and firmly pack out any empty space. Put the lid on and lay it on its side on the rollers and switch on and allow to run for an hour. I regularly use a large container to refresh many bottles at once I haven’t used in a while. Regularly refreshed bottles only need a minute os so tumbling before use.

I did something similar. Took a spare Arduino, hooked a basic servo up to it and gave it a quick program to move the servo back and forth. A little hot glue and popsicle sticks to hold the paint bottles and I had a paint shaker. It wasn't as intense as this one, more of a start it and let it run for an hour kinda thing but it works.

U could use some dremel like tool as a motor and only build shaking mechanism, they have inbuilt rpm regulation. I use 60-70 cm stick and duckt tape, holding stick in middle and waveing it around, crude but works well and is easiest way to shake paint I came with :)

Nice build Luke, the only thing I would recommend is using ring crimps in the terminal block and soldering them to the wires, the vibrations could cause straight wires to slip out over time. Other than that very cool.
