A good location is anywhere that adds to the story you’re trying to tell within the image. However not every location comes with a pretty background. Sometimes you can find yourself stuck in a location that’s small, messy, or just not what you hoped for.
Join Gavin Hoey live for a location portrait session with a difference as he tries to make beautiful photos in an unloved location. Join the conversation, get your questions answered live, and help steer the session or just watch along as Gavin shares his top tips to make the very best of a very bad location.

Great step by step instructional video. Very fun to be watching and feeling engaged. What is the criteria for deciding on F/stop of 5.6 vs F/8? Sometimes you pick one versus the other. Or just one’s preference?

I'm sorry a few difficult questions, I'm not sure how to ask If I was lighting a subject, and I placed an 18% grey card where the subject will be, if I used the guide number to help me achieve the setting on the Speedlight, would this give me accurate exposure? If I did the same thing using a light metre, would it give the same results as the guide number like I saw in the live steam? If I did the same thing again but using Flash Exposure Compensation (FEC), would the exposure be accurate with the FEC at ±0 on the 18% grey card? Or would I need an FEC of +1 for light toned skin with light toned hair wearing light tone clothing to get accurate exposure on the model? And if I used an FEC of -1 for dark skin with dark toned hair wearing dark tone clothing to get accurate exposure on the model? I'm not sure if I've got the right idea with this. If I was bouncing the light from different surfaces, how much light loss would there be compared to other soft modifiers like soft boxes and umbrellas? Thank you for all of your help. This is extremely useful.
@GavinHoey
@GavinHoey 2 года назад
Hi Matt. You're overthinking this. There's lots to unpack there and not enough room here. Basically a light meter reads the light falling on it. So bouncing, flash compensation settings, light modifiers, etc are all irrelevant. Guide numbers are just a guide and skin tones don't affect the flash power.

Photography question: What's the best way to take a photo of a hair stylist's work? A family friend's daughter just started her own business and has been taking photos of the haircuts she's done and while not bad, I know they can be better. But as an amatuer, I'm not exactly sure what would help make them better. She doesn't use a softbox which I'm sure would make the light more pleasing. Other than that, I'm not sure what would be the best way to highlight the hair which is the subject of the photo.

Hi Lenie. Because if the background and the subject don't match you MIGHT want to hide the background... Or not, your choice.

I love the background.. why get rid of it?.. if you want to do that why not just shoot against a plain wall or in a studio.. ? the contrast between the edgy background and her glam outfit is what i'd be interested in capturing.
