Zach, I am watching this for the first time. What I heard first and foremost was your testimony of how God moved in your life. Some people won't want to read this, but I can never deny God. I am a photographer/graphic designer as well. I do want to learn how to start a photography business with a budget of $0.00 at this time. Keep motivating us. God bless.

One thing you have to like about this video is this is like real life. Things don't always go as planned and since the problems aren't edited out you get a snippet of what it's really llike on a job or a webinar. If things can go wrong they will, they key is keeping your cool and keep moving forward. Sure the model might get a little bored but they get paid the same if things go smooth or not. The photographer is the one dealing with the pressure and trying to keep everyone engaged and it's nice when people can jump in and help. If you have been a professional photog and do teaching you hit snags like this once in awhile. It is refreshing to me to see the problems and how they are dealt with, I have more respect for Zach because of that, it's like working without a net.

Maybe I am just at the point where all these tips are making sense in my head, but this has been one of the best lighting tutorials I have watched in the past two years. I've taken a ton of notes and look forward to trying out many of the techniques shown. Thank you!

Zach, I enjoyed your 2-hour information packed Adorama sponsored video. Very comical to see even a seasoned PRO sweat & keep it real at the same time with a locked light meter & cut finger...LOL!! Would like to learn more about setting the ambient light percentage on the light meter both on location and in the studio. Great Video Zach!! Appreciate you giving back of your time and knowledge.

I did that, placing the center of the light just above eye level and it really does work great. Quick and easy.

Hey Zach, you are an EXCELLENT teacher (especially of off-camera flash)... thanks so much for sharing this! Obviously there are so many different ways to do things, but I just happened to really take to the techniques that I have seen you using in many videos, such as: meter using percentage of flash to ambient (60%, 70%, etc.), initial shutter speed 1/100 to leave some room for dialing the ambient on the fly, using ND filters to allow wider apertures, etc. I just wanted to thank you for this video and your past videos. From Kentucky, best of luck to you and your family down there in Nashville!

Excellent class; one of the most useful I've watched. The light meter percentage trick is exactly what I've been looking for to speed up outdoor shots. I've always shied away from meters because I felt they slowed me down, but the one you've recommended will definitely help get me going faster. 👍

I enjoyed this thanks for the talk always useful to hear other viewpoints, techniques and approaches! I wonder what those flashes are you had on set they look minimal and compact? Tehy look lightweight and easy to use rather than the fat monoblocks or highly costly units usually shown - Im using speedlights but fancy something a little more punchy but without a huge price

Hey Zack Thanks a lot for you time and knowledge. Fantastic information . Been contemplating a career change forever and your enthusiusm and words at the beginning in regards of how we think and say "When I do this" is what has to happen to put our dreams and passions into actions and not just thoughts. Playing with photography since I was 18 and now soon to be 51 I think its time to "get at it" If I could ask what presets are you using . I love the black and white at 1:55 Is there somewhere I can purchase that group of presets ? Thanks Dave

This guy came teaching and talk in lighting ratios with formula = (key + fill) /fill Not 1/1 , 1/2, 1/4......go all neard and egocentric messing with people brain) and at the end dont know to use a C-stand and is lightmeter. Very intertaining. At the end Seth save the day and nobody else then him go to the hospital. Very fun . Lawf a lot. Seth was very cool and calm.

Why are people so obsessed with other photographers settings...they're roughly the same in almost any studio, and for outdoors the conditions are different where ever you are so it doesnt matter. Plus he was announcing them out loud from his light meter the entire time and they appear where they normally do in LR (top right corner) and because he was tethered they also appeared larger in the bottom left corner...you really missed all that. Not trying to be mean but this guy was very detailed and specific with his presentation, couldnt be any clearer. Maybe watch it again
@stephaneporte3799

If you were looking for simple steps, well...too bad !!! 20 minutes to set up his 2 lights, and 20 long minutes for his model to wait before being photographed. She seems to be bored like hell... For the result, I find that what he does is too complicated. No need to have studio flashes & sekonic or whatever metering system to take a shot as simple as this one. Among the bunch of videos I ve watched, I like 1 especially. Jerry Ghionis "Depth of field 2018 The luxury of light", this will help you understand and being obsessed with light. There are some other very interesting videos and tutorials on SLR lounge, Fstoppers...go check it out !!! You will learn how to use and understand lighting unstead of learning complicated techniques, and buying bunch of stuffs to get this simple image. This image could have been done with just one speed light and a reflector. Don t get me wrong , I don t say that this photographer is not good, I saw his pictures on google and it s really good work, but I think that this kind of demonstration for a such simple image is too much.(If he tells me he s at f8 on his meter, I don t care to see it on the display...). I think that we' re all too much focused on how to learn techniques and what materials will make us do the best pictures instead of focusing on how can we be more creative and learning how light works.
@schmooopy
@schmooopy 6 лет назад
Agreed. I really enjoyed his presentation up until he started setting up his lights. Not trying to be harsh on the guy, because it is a pretty small space and once you mess something up you get all flustered and nervous, and wind up messing up more stuff, but yeah - 20 minutes to meter and move two lights into position is kinda meh.

Do modeling lights aid in effecting the size of the pupil?
@lvlcapblue
@lvlcapblue 6 лет назад
Tassia Art and Photogrophy they totally do. In a studio, modeling lights are a must, but that's my opinion. The iris is what Peter Hurley refers to as prime real estate in a headshot, so do whatever you can to make it more pronounced. Constant LED lights can do this, or bright modeling lights.

be good to specify the light meter model exact there are two similar same price apparently one doesn't have the flash trigger mode so this technique wouldn't give you the reading you'd need.

I think you are wrong about saying that the native ISO of Nikon cameras is 200 ISO, crop sensor cameras are 200 ISO, but full frame Nikon camera are 100 ISO.

He did show that his assistants do all of his lighting set ups yet yes under his direction. Why he decided to do it all himself when he normally doesn't confused me. At least he shows his vulnerability . Yet none of this diminishes his skill and knowledge. You meed too remember these videos are free because he's selling all the equipment he uses. There are ways to get same results much cheaper.

Unless you can do all this for about $50 or $100 it won't work here in WV. Price rules here, they could care less about quality. Why show us all this good stuff unless it is something we can do on a small budget. Not all of us have your kind of money dude to spend on off camera gear like this (if you were really that poor like I am now). When you teach a class, teach it on the income level of your class or who is going to be watching, not the income level you may be at now.
@MoncoField

You do realize that this content is completely free right. You DONT have to watch it lol. There are thousands of other FREE videos on this platform for people with small budgets. Plus no photographer ever just started off with all the best most expensive gear. You have to learn, work, be resourceful and earn it. Stop complaining and go make it happen or you're never gonna get where you want to be. Oh and the gear of today is the most affordable its ever been in history. You could easily get this equipment now for a fraction of the price. Do some research. Hope that helps
