The heart of Awkward Guests is simple: Players have a hand of six cards, and each card has a value (1, 2 or 3 points, according to the amount of information that it provides) and several references (i.e., the subjects of the card information). During a turn, you ask for information about two different references in which you are interested. The rest of the players can offer you cards that contain the requested references, and you can trade for those cards by giving the offering players the same number of points they have offered via cards in your hand.
After each round ends, players can try to solve the mystery. If the mystery is not solved, players discard part of their hands and receive three new cards. The player or players who solve the mystery first win.

5.0 - My absolutely favorite games. You can pry them out of my cold dead hands.
4.5 - Love this game! At the same time missing something that would make it a 5. Could be hard to table, lacking variability, a little light, etc.
4.0 - Really great game, almost always keeping, although has meaningful complaints as to what takes away from the experience.
3.5 - Really enjoyed, don't love it, may lose out to better games but the idea of never playing again is a bit sad.
3.0 - A good game, would play and suggest with the right people, if I never played it again wouldn't lose any sleep.
2.5 - A game I'd play again , but will never suggest it myself
2.0 - A game I don't want to play again
1.5 - A game I can't find any reason to recommend
1.0 - A game that is just bad.

In Germany there is a saying: "Der Mörder ist immer der Gärtner" (The killer is always the gardener). So, is he in this game as well? 🤔

Not in this one :)

I'm in sync with you on this review. I did overall enjoy the game, but I really didn't care for how clues were distributed with the card system. I got rid of my copy and backed Scandaloh largely on Thinker/Themer's preview discussing how the game is less dependent on the cards and leans more heavily on deduction. However, I'm guessing The Search for Planet X will still be my favorite logical deduction game because I love the puzzle and the theme.

A solid game to play both with gamers and non gamers. 8/10 for me

Jury still out for me. Think I’ve played mostly easy cases so cranking up difficulty may help but just feels a bit too much like the game is ‘on rails’, creating a fairly restricted, contrived experience. Continually getting repeat clues from other players gets a bit tired, and the set up is pretty tedious…but need to give it a few more tries t higher difficulty

This game is fun as a social game, but it's not really a deduction game. It gives the illusion of deduction. You can't really deduce anything yourself. You can guess, but it's a complete guess. Theres no logic to base it on You get cards until you've ticked off enough things to 100% know the answer. If you have two possible killers, there's no way to deduce the correct one, you just have to wait until you get a card that confirms who it is. This game is information denial as usual hide cards from people.

Agreed to an extent. Hence my mix of positive and negative

I have played a few times. This is a nice deduction game and was thinking to get one version (prefer this crime theme a lot more), but don’t like art that much. Card hoarding can be an issue so sometimes I just play nicely and give the best clues forward (or negotiate I will give you something good if you do as well.)

I bought this game with so much excitement, and it really disappointed me. It is really frustrating to spend turns watching other players getting cards and writing down information. Also, there is no clear indication on how to handle cases of trading the same cards back and forth. Some players started to write down the card numbers in their hand to avoid to get them back in future rounds. Yes, overall a neat idea, which really did not work for me.

Exact same experience for me. I think it really depends on how much you value player interaction. Some people don't mind games where you and your friends are starring down at a table, playing their own solo games for 90% of the game. This is not the case for my group. It certainly wasn't a horrible experience but definitely not one I want to play again.

I respect the desgn but I'm personally not a fan. I was the one that solved the murder but it just felt like 4 friends playing their own solo games. Player interaction is very important to me and it plays such a minor role in this game. That said, it's still a clever idea. (App is highly recommended)

I honestly think this is the perfect substitute to Clue/Cluedo. Has about the same interaction, but a much better mechanism and gameplay. More replayability with the app and the cases too. If someone comes to your place and says that they know Clue and like it, this is the game you bring to them and they are introduced to a whole new world of designer board games.

Another version of Cluedo/Clue then!

To a degree yes

We find it a lot more involved and interesting than Cluedo. The underlying system that sets up each mystery is *incredibly* clever.
@alastairbishop2450

It also allows players to keep playing even after they guess wrongly, which Cluedo can't do.
