This version was weird, it tried to copy Awkward Guests but put a less approachable theme on it and made it far more fiddly and complex. It's not like the deduction in AG is simple, it can still be hard to figure out especially in higher difficulties. I can't see why it was made really.
I agree with everything Tom said, and yet as a lover of deduction games and logic puzzles, by the end of the 2nd game I was hooked and enjoyed it. But he is right, theme, flow, art… obtuse and way more complicated than it needed to be. Planet X is the best of the best.
I love Awkward Guests. I agree that this theme didn't appeal to me, and what I saw in the KS didn't seem to have the easy flow of AG. At this point, I think I'd just like to have a colorized version of Awkward Guests.
Looks really clever. I can see how the theme is off-putting but I think its also niche in a way that certain people will really love it. And it also seems topically important too in this day and age. Honestly I gotta give em props for sticking to their guns on this one. As evidenced by the bad review quotes. You only do that if you are confidant and happy with your product. I think I might buy it just as a show of support. Sales ain't everything for everyone and not all games gotta Campbells soup for everyone.
I actually avoided Awkward Guests when I heard this was coming out a year ago because of the unique theme it offers. Many games are the who/what/where murder mystery style. I feel like ScandalOh has done a good job taking that flavor but finally finding a different theme that works (i.e. breaking the scandal), which was great for me because I didn't need another murder mystery in my collection. I do agree that it isn't as approachable or easy to teach. That said, considering it's supposed to be a step up from Awkward Guests and other deduction games in terms of the complexity of the puzzle, I was willing to sacrifice the approachability.
I generally go to ThinkerThemer for their reviews and they agree with you that the approach-ability is sacrificed just a bit for or complexity's sake (which they/you/me think is a good thing). They also think Scandaloh! plays better at 2p. As a deduction games fan, I prefer more complexity to 'grow into'.
Why did DT decide to remove the reviewer's name from the title of the videos? If it says "DT Studios in the thumbnail, should I just assume Tom is reviewing?
Agree, i don't like it. Now i have to click in to see if I should watch. Not everyone likes every reviewers video/opinion so it's frustrating have to start watching to see if i actually want to watch.
The theme sucks, the connections are confusing. But I found the cards much easier to understand. Once we got it too the table and played it was much nicer overall. The biggest issue I have is that while the clue sheet is thematic it's not good enough. We added some of the data from the shields and it made it a TON easier. But I do wish it was murder
@@emiliod9661 on the middle section of the dividers in the upper right is a chart that lists what support characters are associated with each resource. It helps to be able to cross things off here also. Our group finds the tracking sheets to be the weakest part of the game and even with that element we think there may be a better layout.
You don't break a scandal over someone you actually just discover a bad secret from a politician and do what a journalist should do and publish it to the public.
That's too bad. I like Awkward Guests because it makes you feel smart when you are figuring things out. This seemed to take it to another level, but turns out that doesn't work so well. Maybe I'll pick this one up at discount in the future because that's probably where this one will eventually end up now.
'Awkward guests' is a great game, but one thing I don't like is the trading cards mechanism. There's no tactics or strategy to it really, you just try and trade as much as possible to get as much information as possible. I had hoped they changed that, maybe made an auction mechanism instead, or worker placement or anything. This is the same game only with a different theme, so I see no reason to buy it at all if you own 'Awkward guests'.
There sure are tactics and strategy for trading cards. Not all cards are equal. If you hold onto a card that eliminates entire categories, then the other players are unable to easily know this. Every game I have played of Awkward Guests has players holding onto cards. We normally only get to see them if they guess wrong.
@@MrDaveydtd I kindda disagree. There is no paying big for a particular card because you trade equally, a 1 for a one and a 3 for a 3. The key to winning is having more information than the other players. The player who trades the most will also have the most information, so its just about trading as much as possible.
I am sensing a pattern here with the new Dice Tower reviewer format where the multi-person reviews are positive and the single person reviews are negative....
Haha, definitely some adjusting as this is the first week of trying this, but it won't always be the case. Not to tip our hat too much about the future though.
I hope this isn't the case and as Chris said it is a first week thing. I like the mix of single and group reviews. Not sure about some of the video titles that are also new thing though. Yak for example
I LOOOVE deduction games. Search for Planet X and now Turing Machine are two of my favorite games ever. I think Awkward Guests and Scandaloh! for that matter are two of the most disappointing games I've ever played... I'm not impressed with either and I REALLY wish I liked them. I kickstarted both and have given up on Awkward Guests and never enjoyed Scandaloh even a little...
