Awkward Interviews - Ritchie Blackmore, Bon Scott & Ronnie Montrose, Rock Journalist Talks Get Steve Rosen's book "Tonechaser" here www.tonechaserbook.com
This guy was a guitar player and didn't like Van Halen 1?! Are you kidding me?! For those of us who our guitar players, our ears melted off of our heads. I was a big Michael Schenker / Frank Marino fan and viewed them as untouchable until Feb 1978. When we heard Eddie, he was so off the grid we all knew we were hearing history. I just don't get "music journalists"
I listened a lot of rock music and Richie Blackmore's work in song writing and guitar playing in 70's is unmatched even today.Today everybody just play fastest as they can and most of that ia just shit.
Informative interview. Thank you! I can understand if you choose to "bleep" the profanities, but bleeping the name of a drug seems odd to me. At the time c*caine use was rampant throughout the entertainment industry. Not saying it does nothing to deter it's use, or the damage it can and has caused. We learn by facing our foibles, not obscuring them. Out of respect for you I also censured the apparently objectionable word. Perhaps this is a broadcasting issue. Will you're excellent interviews not be played or censured by RU-vid or other media formats? ✌️
You can find on YT Sammy Hagar talking about trying to deal with Ronnie Montrose. Poor Ronnie, RIP, suffered from mental illness. A great guitarist but its too bad he didn't get help.
This feller explains Eddie Van Halen's obvious talent was fighting against an underlying self destructive personality. He no doubt enjoyed fame, but was distrustful of it and decided to sabotage it. He was annoyed by Dave Lee Roth's increasing front man status taking away from Eddie's vision and did not value Dave's unique and star power. He sacrificed a great front man because of his own picadilos, and hence stopped the band in it's tracks from being gaining momentum to be as big as the Rolling Stones. Hagar changed the dynamic instantly, and sure Van Halen now regained control the band's direction, but the magic and humour was gone forever. Dave was at his peak. The 6 albums with Dave were stone cold classics with energetic, great material and flair. They sound as fresh today as they were when released over 40 years ago. Hagar was a good solo artist, a forgettable humourless frontman and but besides "5150" the band had released bland and boring albums.
Many people didn’t like Blackmore, I saw Rainbow in 76 on the Rainbow Rising tour, we used to hang out backstage to possibly get an autograph. Dio couldn’t have been nicer talked to everyone there, although I was 15 and probably only sounded stupid and fumbled my words. Blackmore completely ignored people, rude and dismissive.
I will never understand why, and it is very unusual to sack the front man of at that point the biggest band around. Usually the front man dies, like with Queen, and INXS and impossible to replace. Or with Ironmaiden, get a better lead singer. Even Black Sabbath survived Ozzy's sacking and got a great lead singer replacement. Or the guitarist and lead singer have a bad patch like Richards and Jagger, but they work around it. But sacking David Lee Roth whilst the band were gaining momentum is just ridiculously reckless and pathetic. The greatest act of sabotage in rock. Dave was unique, and powerful personality. No one would done what Van Halen did in fit.
Blackmore would be a challenge without question. He seems full of himself and carries himself as a complete A$s Hole. Most everyone ever in a band with Richie wanted to take him on a Deep Sea Fishing Trip. Not taking anything from BlackMore’s ability as a musician especially as a guitar player, it’s just his eccentric manner in which he comports himself is off putting.
